Public Universities are always running on a limited budget which means they sometimes come up with ?innovative? solutions. Asus Eee Box B203 gets Celeron power

Asus has slipped another new Eee box model into its lineup called the B203. While pricing is unknown at this point, the CPU Asus chose for the machine could make it one of the least expensive models in the Eee Box line. The B203 runs on an Intel Celeron C220 processor that is priced lower than the Intel Atom typically used in Eee Box machines. Despite the Celeron being cheaper than the Atom, it should provide somewhat higher performance. Storage options include 80GB, 120GB, or 160GB hard drives. Other features include a quartet of USB ports, memory card reader, DVI out, Ethernet jack and integrated WiFi. Asus says that the B203 only needs 20 watts of power.

Asus Eee Box - First Look

As a brand name, Eee is a phenomenon. Scarily reminiscent of a console counterpart with which it rhymes, the Nintendo Wii, Asus' new Eee Box range has as much potential in the desktop sector. Of course I'm not saying Eee PCs of any variety will ever sell as much as Nintendo's vaunted little console, but the brand-name is incredibly easy to remember and can be an acronym for a multitude of things.

Like its mobile predecessors (the Asus Eee PC-901 or Eee PC-1000, to name but two) had a huge impact on notebooks, the Eee Box looks set to take the desktop market by storm. Frankly, we wouldn't be surprised if it makes a larger splash than Apple's Mac Mini did in its day.

ASUS Eee Box Preview & Intel's Atom Benchmarked

The Eee Box is effectively a headless notebook with no keyboard/mouse. In fact, the new version of the Eee PC features the exact same hardware configuration as the Eee Box - just in notebook form. Using notebook components in a desktop PC is nothing new, Apple does it all the time with the majority of its machines. The iMac uses a mobile CPU, as does the Apple TV, despite neither one being a notebook.

Stylistically, ASUS did a tremendous job with the Eee Box. The system we have here is an early prototype, the final version will be available with a solid white or black finish (the random pixel pattern on our system wont make it to production). The machine is extremely sleek measuring 17.7 cm x 22.1 cm x 2.7 cm (6.97" x 8.7" x 1.06").

Without a keyboard or display to complain about and an even lower price tag ($269 or $299 depending on configuration), we set off to see if the Eee Box would have more universal appeal than the Eee PC.

The Linux Asus Eee PC Ships with Remotely Exploitable Flaw

Out of the box, the highly touted Asus Eee PC ships with a known code-execution vulnerability that allows a hacker to remotely gain root over a network.

According to a warning from RISE Security, the Linux-powered machine uses an old and vulnerable version of the Samba daemon for file and print sharing.
Using the Metasploit point-and-click attack tool, RISE Security was able to launch an exploit that took complete control of the Asus Eee PC.

Asus Eee - in Desktop form.

Good news for fans of the Asus Eee PC! The desktop version of the Eee PC will be available in August, this summer. The price is unannounced, however it is expected that Asus will announce the price very soon.

With the desktop, buyers will get a Windows XP Home machine running on Intel's Atom N270 processor at 1.6GHz, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and an 80GB hard drive.

The usual connectivity options will be in place, along with three USB ports and a VGA out for connecting a monitor - you'll need to supply the screen yourself, of course.

Asus has said that it will add Linux to the mix later in the year, at which time we expect other hardware configurations to surface too.

Asus Sells out of Eee Box in Taiwan Debut

Typhoon Fung Wong failed to spoil Asustek Computer's (Asus) plan to launch the mini-desktop version of its Eee PC in Taiwan on Wednesday. The company sold out of the Eee Box due in part to a surprisingly low price. One thousand Eee Boxes were offered to Taiwanese consumers for NT$7,988 (US$262) through several retailers, including an e-store run by PChome Online. The e-tailer also offered the Eee Box with a 22-inch LCD monitor for NT$15,988.

"It's an amazing price, a very economical price," said Davis Tsai, general manager of Microsoft Taiwan, during the launch ceremony. Jerry Shen, CEO of Asustek, said his company expects to ship 100,000 to 200,000 Eee Boxes this year.

Asus blames lack of Linux Eee PCs on Atom hold-ups

Asus has blamed Intel not Microsoft for the apparent absence of the Atom-based Eee PC 901 from UK suppliers' shelves.

Readers alerted us to the fact that while Windows XP-loaded 901's are available to buy from British resellers, there's a paucity of the Linux version. It'll be available in late July, suppliers say.

That has led some would-be buyers to suspect pressure applied to Asus by the hand of the Beast of Redmond, but Asus UK spokeswoman Helen Ling pointed the finger at Intel.

Asus set to unveil XP-ready Eee PC?

Asus has confirmed that Microsoft will be appearing at its CeBIT press conference next week, suggesting that the XP-loaded Eee PC is about to make an appearance on European shores.

Given that XP has more demanding system requirements than its current Linux operating system, speculation is rife that Asus will take the opportunity to showcase the 8GB solid-state disk model, with 1GB of DDR2 memory.

ASUS Eee PC 900 reviewed: 'staggering' value for money

ASUS' original Eee might have impressed many with its super-budget price tag, but the relatively small 7-inch screen dissuaded others from considering it as a "proper" laptop. While the new Eee PC 900 might only have 1.9-inches more, it means the ultraportable now musters 1,024 x 600 resolution; UK site Trusted Reviews took a first-look at the 900 and found that the extra pixels - among other things - are enough to make the laptop into a true contender. Not as slick as a MacBook Air or Sony TZ, perhaps, but a fraction of the price.

ASUS planning world's cheapest dual touchscreen Eee Reader

Back in March ASUS had shown us a glimpse of their dual panel touchscreen concept at CeBIT. Since then we had all forgotten about this little beast from the company. Just over a week ago, a rumor came up that ASUS may just push out an Eee-book reader this year. Jerry Shen, the company's president, said that it may not be only one device that they launch and said that the company plans to unveil the device before the end of the year, all this according to Times Online. The company aims to launch two versions, a budget version and a premium version in the UK.

ASUS' CEO Discusses Intel Atom, HDDs For 8.9" Eee PC 900

Last week, official
details began to trickle out
concerning ASUS' new Eee PC 900 sub-notebook.
Today, ASUS’s CEO opened the floodgates when it comes to specifications for its
second generation Eee PC notebook.

As previously reported, the new Eee PC 900 features a new 8.9”
1024x600 display in place of the 800x480 display found on the original
Eee PC 401
. The larger screen with a higher resolution should help to
silence some of the more vocal critics who bemoaned the needs to constantly
scroll horizontally and vertically to read webpages.

Another change with the new Eee PC 900 comes in the area of
storage. The original Eee PC first was made available with 4GB of storage. As
the months progressed, ASUS released 2GB
and 8GB
models
to occupy lower and higher price points respectively.

Asus pledges end to Eee PC 900 battery swap 'delay'

What is Asus UK doing with its Eee 900 battery replacement programme? Punters who've tried to get a new power pack out of the company claim the scheme has been quietly shelved. No so, says Asus. Asus announced the programme earlier this month. It offered to swap the 900's 4400mAh battery for a 5800mAh one to any owner of the Small, Cheap Computer willing to stump up £11.75 in admin and postage charges.

At the time, Asus said the scheme would commence on 10 June, but a single Register Hardware told us when he checked on the date, he was informed the cost would be £15 and the batteries weren't available yet. We checked with Asus and were told that this was not the case, so we thought nothing more about it. Until this week, when we started hearing from Eee 900 owners who claimed they'd been told by Asus that the battery programme had been "postponed until further notice".

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE gets new Atom, 9.5hr battery

ASUS on Monday hoped to claim supremacy in netbooks with the Eee PC 1000HE. The variant of ASUS' familiar 10-inch netbook is the company's first to use the new 1.66GHz Atom processor that gets both a faster 667MHz system bus and faster integrated graphics that ASUS claims is HD-capable. The new chip combined with an equally new high-density battery gives the system as much as 9.5 hours of runtime without using a bulky add-on.
