Multiple Package Transaction: In a multiple package transaction, you can create a single transaction from multiple packages. Embedded UI Handler: You can embed a custom user interface (UI) handler in the Windows Installer package. This makes a custom UI easier to integrate. A Warning About the Windows Vista SP1 Beta Standalone Installer

Robert McLaws: By now you're aware that the Windows Vista SP1 Beta has been released to beta testers for a thorough shakedown. I just wanted to give anyone who still has UAC on a bit of warning. If you right-click the installer and select "Run as Administrator" first, then it won't take nearly as long to extract the files. Otherwise, it takes almost 15 minutes just to fail thrugh the copy the first time, until you finally get the UAC dialog.

Also, be aware that, while it says it can take up to 30 minutes, it's closer to an hour, and it will restart 3 or 4 times in the process (checking the box at the beginning is definitely advised). I've been running SP1 on my main machine for a few hours now, and it seems to be pretty stable. I'll have more on this later.

What Windows platforms will Windows Installer 4.5 ship in?

Our friends at InstallShield had some questions about schedule and platforms. One of those questions was:

Question:

What Windows platforms will Windows Installer ship in?

Answer:

Windows Installer 4.5 will initially ship as a Windows redistributable component via download center. At RTM, redistributable packages will support installing to Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Windows Vista RTM and SP1, and Windows Server 2008. These redistributable packages will support the three CPU architectures Windows to which these platforms ship: x86, x64, and ia64. These choices for platform support are consistent with the Windows Service Pack road map...

Debugging a Per-User Installation Error on Windows Vista

Chris Jackson: Yesterday, a friend asked for some assistance debugging an issue with Windows Installer. It was one of those situations where you've looked at the problem so closely, so many times, that you just needed another set of eyes. (They're close to shipping, so they've been doing nothing but look at bugs, probably for a while.)

Some background:

What they're doing is a rather interesting use of Windows Installer. They're using it to drop a setup.exe and then run it. So, they have a custom action of type 0xC02, which is a deferred custom action, promoted to not use impersonation, which runs as an exe. This custom action spawns another version of itself (with different arguments), and then the process exits so the installer can complete. The second version of this custom action then wants to uninstall the msi, as well as launch the setup.exe. So, the msi is just a way to package up the setup.exe.

And, with UAC, it was breaking.

Deployed: Windows Vista SP1 RC on ALL of my PCs

Brandon LeBlanc: Today Nick announced the availability of the release candidate for Windows Vista SP1. I had a chance to get the RC build of Windows Vista SP1 installed a few days ago. I decided to roll the RC out on all of my PCs which showcase a variety of device types and scenarios:

  • My Main Desktop PC running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 - check.
  • My Test/Work PC running Windows Vista Business - check.
  • My Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate - check.
  • My Samsung Q1 UMPC running Windows Vista Home Premium - check.
  • My Digital CableCard PC running Windows Vista Home Premium - check.

In installing the RC on my PCs, I did a combination of using the standalone installer and Windows Update. Before proceeding to install the SP1 RC bits, I first needed to uninstall the SP1 beta bits first. Users looking to install the Windows Vista SP1 RC will need to uninstall any previous version of SP1 prior to the installation of the RC from either Windows Update or the standalone installer.

Whats coming with Windows? Even the insiders arent sure'

Sometimes you find fascinating little tidbits of Microsoft news buried in obscure places, tossed in as throwaway remarks. Todays case in point comes from a post at the Windows Installer team blog, which tries to explain why some references to Windows Installer 4.1 appeared on an MSDN and then were removed.

The explanation provides an interesting factoid and also illustrates a larger principle about how Microsoft works.

First the factoid. From the post (with emphasis added):
The back story here starts about this time last year when we were finishing up Windows Installer 4.0 in Windows Vista and asking ourselves Whats next?. At that time, we didnt know the bar for features in Windows Vista SP1 and next major release of Windows.

    <>

Knowing none of the feature and release criteria, our best guess at the time was that Windows Vista SP1 would ship first, an out of band release would ship next, and then the next full version of Windows would be our focus.

    <>

he new guard in Windows had a very different bar for the Vista SP than had been in practice for previous releases (at least in my memory). Generally there is lip service to no large feature work in a SP but this time folks listened. Big feature adds were heavily scrutinized. The items we wanted to fix in the SP, UAC tweaks, were big feature by the new bar.

When the UAC tweaks were rejected for Vista SP1, the justification for 4.1 faded as there were no new features in the Windows Installer in Vista SP1.
The good news to all of you who have been complaining about UAC is that your protests have not been falling on deaf ears. The bad news is that whatever work is being done will not appear in SP1.

So when will it appear? I found it fascinating that this team of developers at Microsoft, working on core technology, had to guess at the timeline and feature set for future versions of Windows, including a crucial service pack. Let that be a lesson for those who believe that Microsoft, in Borg-like fashion, ruthlessly coordinates its activities. The reality is theres a lot of internal debate within the halls at One Microsoft Way, and even insiders are confused over whats coming up in the Windows road map.

Now, can we talk about that out-of-band release?

MSI Utility for Microsoft Application Virtualization

The MSI Utility for Microsoft Application Virtualization is a new tool designed to extend virtual application deployment in certain key scenarios. In cases where a computer running Microsoft System Center Virtual Application Server is not available, the MSI Utility allows delivery of sequenced applications directly to Microsoft SoftGrid Application Virtualization for Desktops and Microsoft SoftGrid Application Virtualization for Terminal Services.

The MSI Utility enables the distribution of virtual applications without streaming. Instead, it uses Windows Installer to load and configure virtual applications. By leveraging this standard format, the MSI Utility achieves Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 platform version-agnostic distribution of virtual applications if supported by organizational Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) systems. As such, the MSI Utility is a stepping stone to the richer deployment options available in Microsoft System Center Virtual Application Server 4.5.
