Security analysts closer to improved antivirus software test

Antivirus vendors are closer to agreeing on a new way to test their software after widespread agreement that older antivirus tests can be misleading.

AV-Test.org, a German antivirus testing organization, is meshing suggestions from vendors such as Symantec, Panda Software, and Trend Micro as well as its own for a new testing regime, said Maik Morgenstern, who conducts product tests at AV-Test.org.

The new testing proposal -- also supported by vendors Kaspersky Lab and F-Secure, as well as other testers such as Virus Bulletin -- will be presented next month at the Association of AntiVirus Asia Researchers 2007 conference in Seoul.

Companies supporting AV-Test.org's paper will try to marshal support from other security vendors, said Mark Kennedy, an antivirus engineer with Symantec.

Neowin Review: Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009

Back when I got my first PC, there wasn't a need for Antivirus software, malware wasn't heard of, and Spam came in a can, and could arguably be called a tasty treat. Now, you just about can't run a PC without some sort of Antivirus/spyware protection, especially if you're connected to the internet (something we'd only be able to use if we were students at the local college). Back in late 1990, Symantec released their first Antivirus software, called Norton Antivirus (from the original company name, and founder, Peter Norton). At the time, it was considered one of, if not THE best AV software out there.

Apple Recommends Antivirus Software

Apple has issued a technical note about Mac antivirus software, and, for the first time, suggests that Macs need such software. The note says: "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult." The note then goes on to mention three antivirus programs, with Intego VirusBarrier X5 listed first. It is worth noting this, since Apple, especially in its recent "Get a Mac" ads, has always publicly tried to ignore the threat of malware to Macs, as well as other security issues.

Symantec Earns Unprecedented 35th Consecutive VB100 Award

Symantec Corporation has earned an unprecedented 35th consecutive VB100 Award from Virus Bulletin. Symantec was one of only two vendors to receive a perfect detection score for all the December 2007 tests, while many security companies outright failed them. The core technology that was tested powers both Symantec’s Norton product line for consumers and enterprise products. Symantec has earned 41 VB100 Awards since 1998. To earn the VB100 designation, a product must detectboth on demand and on access, and in its default settingsall malware known to be “in the wild” at the time of the review and generate no false positives when scanning a set of clean files.

Virus Bulletin’s signature-based tests have long been considered the benchmark for gauging the quality of antivirus solutions in detecting a vast range of known viruses. There is a growing need, however, for behavioral-based tests as well. Such tests are imperative in assessing modern behavior-based systems, which detect malicious activity as it occurs, and they offer a more complete evaluation of the various ways an antivirus product can provide protection.

“ It is gratifying to see the effectiveness of Symantec solutions continue to be acknowledged by well-established organizations such as Virus Bulletin. As security testing methods and technologies evolve and advance, Symantec looks forward to taking part in new opportunities that help ensure that consumers have the most comprehensive information with which to compare security products ,” said Kevin Haley, director of product management, Symantec Security Response.

Rating antivirus software: vendors to agree on standard testing guidelines

Understanding which AV package provides the best level of total protection isn't easy. Products from Symantec (Norton Antivirus) and McAfee are virtually ubiquitous, but there are a dozen or more smaller players in the market, all of which advertise themselves as being the best solution for total antivirus protection. Since each company creates its own benchmarks and comparisons, though, it's virtually impossible for an end user to compare one product against another. AV manufacturers are aware of this problem, and are working collectively towards a solution. As PC World reports, many of the larger players in the AV market met in Seoul last week to form the Anti-Malware Testing Working Group. The new group will be tasked with creating a set of software benchmarks that can conduct behavioral tests on multiple suites of security software.

Symantec releases antivirus just for gamers, but why?

Symantec today released Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition, an antivirus utility designed specifically not to bother gamers while they, err, game. The "Gamer Mode" suspends updates, alerts, and other background activities when you’re in the middle of a game. It is automatically enabled when the system is in full screen mode (and can also be manually enabled). Resource-intensive actions such as a system scan only occur when the computer is idle. Furthermore, Symantec claims that the software is a performance-driven release, but then again, the normal NAV2009 is as well (as we've seen in a recent performance test). Rowan Trollope, senior vice president of consumer products at Symantec gave the following explanation for the product release...

Sophos: 'Don't rely on antivirus software'

Security vendor Sophos has warned companies not to rely on antivirus software to protect their IT infrastructure and systems.

S peaking at the Information Systems Security Association conference in London on Thursday, Vanjer Svajcer, senior virus researcher for Sophos, said companies should also look to alternative technologies and procedures to ensure their IT assets are secure.

Svajcer said: "I always say, 'Do not rely on antivirus software'. In 99 per cent of cases you cannot. The problem is we have to see a virus before we can detect it. If antivirus is in place, it may not detect [a virus] because it may be very targeted for you."..
