Why are Microsoft watchers surprised that Microsoft has no plans to integrate antivirus software into Windows? Redmond sees bigger dollar signs in antivirus services.
Microsoft officials have been saying for quite some time that Windows Vista will ship with antispyware software built into the operating system. But for more than a year, Microsoft's top dogs have been quite clear that Microsoft has no intentions to bundle antivirus software into the product.

29.1.2006Security analysts closer to improved antivirus software test
Antivirus vendors are closer to agreeing on a new way to test their software after widespread agreement that older antivirus tests can be
misleading.
AV-Test.org, a German antivirus testing organization, is
meshing suggestions from vendors such as Symantec, Panda Software, and Trend Micro as well as its own for a new testing regime, said Maik Morgenstern,
who conducts product tests at AV-Test.org.
The new testing proposal -- also supported by vendors Kaspersky Lab and F-Secure, as
well as other testers such as Virus Bulletin -- will be presented next month at the Association of AntiVirus Asia Researchers 2007 conference in
Seoul.
Companies supporting AV-Test.org's paper will try to marshal support from other security vendors, said Mark Kennedy, an
antivirus engineer with Symantec.

05.10.2007Neowin Review: Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009
Back when I got my first PC, there wasn't a need for Antivirus software, malware wasn't heard of, and Spam came in a can, and could arguably
be called a tasty treat. Now, you just about can't run a PC without some sort of Antivirus/spyware protection, especially if you're connected
to the internet (something we'd only be able to use if we were students at the local college). Back in late 1990, Symantec released their first
Antivirus software, called Norton Antivirus (from the original company name, and founder, Peter Norton). At the time, it was considered one of, if
not THE best AV software out there.

05.02.2009Microsoft's OneCare improves antivirus test ranking
Microsoft Corp.'s Windows
Live OneCare climbed from
March's dead last to 14th
place in a test of 17
antivirus programs, an
Austrian security researcher
reported today.
Andreas Cleminti's AV
Comparatives latest test
pitted the top antivirus
software against the
20,000-some threats that
debuted during the last three
months to measure how well
each could finger unknown
exploits. Cleminti stopped
updating each product's virus
database, or "signature,"
Feb. 2, but continued to probe
their defenses with every
newly discovered virus,
malicious script, worm,
Trojan, or backdoor until May
2.
"Even if most
antivirus products provide
daily or hourly
updates, without
heuristic/generic methods there is always a
time frame where the user is
not protected," Cleminti said
in the report issued today.

Symantec releases antivirus just for gamers, but why?
Symantec today released Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition, an antivirus utility designed specifically
not to bother gamers while they, err, game. The "Gamer Mode" suspends updates, alerts, and other background activities when you’re in
the middle of a game. It is automatically enabled when the system is in full screen mode (and can also be manually enabled). Resource-intensive
actions such as a system scan only occur when the computer is idle. Furthermore, Symantec claims that the software is a performance-driven release,
but then again, the normal NAV2009 is as well (as we've seen in a recent performance test).
Rowan Trollope, senior vice president of consumer products at Symantec gave the following explanation for the product release...

OneCare places 16th in antivirus test, 13th in spyware.
Virus Bulletin this month released the results of a major comparative of the latest security products, covering a range of metrics. These include
detection rates over various types of malware, false positive rates, scanning speed, proactive detection, and response times to outbreaks.
Taking a look at the first one, detection rates, it's clear that a beta version of GDATA's AVK 2009 (which uses the Avast and BitDefender
scan engines) took first place for both malware (measured against 1,164,662 samples) as well as ad- and spyware (94,291 samples). Avira's Premium
Security Suite 2008 was second for malware, F-Secure 2009 was second in ad- and spyware, and Secure Computing's Webwasher gateway product came
third in both categories.
he most interesting data to emerge from this measurement (4 week span) was that the 2009 version of Norton topped
the table with an impressive 6,202 incremental micro-updates, issued several times per hour, while Kaspersky came a distant second with a mere 696.
Half of the 34 products tested had fewer than 100, including those from McAfee (21) and Trend Micro (30)

Vista’s UAC Catches Rootkits Before Installing
Looks like Vista’s much-maligned User Access Control or UAC has one benefit for a savvy user: it can detect rootkits before they install. AV-Test.org
conducted a test of popular antivirus programs to see how well they detected rootkits and the tester had to turn off UAC on the Vista test systems
because it detected every rootkit used in the test.
Once on a PC, rootkits can bury themselves quietly, but they have to get to that
point first. As long as users interpret prompts from the UAC system attentively, or those messages haven't in some way been spoofed, rootkits
struggle to jump to the PC without drawing attention to themselves.

AV Still Weak on Rootkit Detection, Fixing Infections
Independent antivirus testing organization AV-Test.org has released new test results on the
latest versions of 30 antivirus products, and the report cards weren't all good.
None of the AV products scored straight As, and
a few failed in some categories, such as remediation from malware infections and AV's old nemesis, rootkit detection.
New
malware just keeps on coming, according to the report. In January and February alone, AV-Test.org discovered a whopping 1.1 million samples of unique
malware spreading around the Net. The organization found nearly 5.5 million total during all of last year, up from 972,000 in 2006. (See Bake-off: Many AV Products Can't Detect Rootkits.)

Apple Recommends Antivirus Software
Apple has issued a technical note about Mac antivirus software, and, for the first time, suggests that Macs need such software. The note says: "Apple
encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the
whole virus writing process more difficult." The note then goes on to mention three antivirus programs, with Intego VirusBarrier X5 listed first. It
is worth noting this, since Apple, especially in its recent "Get a Mac" ads, has always publicly tried to ignore the threat of malware to Macs, as
well as other security issues.

AV-Test Deems Windows Security Essentials "Very Good"
Microsoft's new free security software, Windows Security Essentials, passed a preliminary antivirus exam with flying
colors, said independent and trusted firm AV-Test, which tested Essentials, launched yesterday in beta, on Windows XP,
Vista and Windows 7. It put it up against nearly 3,200 common viruses, bot Trojans and worms, said Andreas Marx, one of the firm's managers. The
malware was culled from the most recent WildList, a list of threats actually actively attacking computers. 'All files were properly detected and
treated by the product,' Marx said in an e-mail. 'That's good, as several other scanners are still not able to detect and kill all of
these critters yet.' It also tested well on false positives.
