Microsoft Exec Vows To Reduce Complexity In Partner Relations

Microsoft is hoping that simpler is better.

The software giant's U.S. Partner Group is working to reduce the complexity of dealing with the company, as well as looking to reduce the costs involved with maintaining the relationship, said Robert Deshaies, vice president of the U.S. Partner Group at Microsoft, during an address at XChange '07 Monday night.

However, the company has some work to do, judging by the number of hands raised when Deshaies asked if it was more complex to do business with Microsoft than a year ago.

"Clearly, we have not made the impact we have to," Deshaies said, inviting VARs to see him after the keynote to relay the top issues they're facing. "That's what we need to do to be successful. The evolution is getting down to a point where you're dealing with one Microsoft."..

New Vista Boot Animation & Sound?

Could this be the 'spiritual' branding experience Steve Ball, group program manager for the Windows Audio Video Excellence team was talking about?

Even though the sound is unique, after playing it a few times, I've already gotten used to it. Somewhere through the deep tones, it still reminds me of Windows.

Firefox 3 Takes Web Animation to the Bleeding Edge

The Firefox team is showing great dedication in its quest to fix the little things broken on the web.

Animated GIFs are something of an eyesore. Not to mention so very 1998. That's why it's refreshing to learn that the next Mozilla Firefox -- version 3 is due to arrive in late September or early October -- will include support for two new animation techniques that will encourage a shift away from animated GIFs and challenge the use of Flash for smaller user interface elements (where it's unnecessary in the first place).

These are experimental methods using data formats not yet widely supported. But they are an improvement over the status quo, and they point the way toward a future more reliant on forward-thinking web standards.

Sprint to reduce staff by 8,000, TI to cut 3,400

Sprint today announced that they will reduce their staffing by nearly 8,000 people. Along with other benefit reductions, that is expected to save the company approximately $1.2 billion per year. Layoffs will take place over the next two months and will affect all levels of the company, all across the country. A large chunk of the jobs, estimates are around 2,000, are expected to be lost near the company headquarters outside Kansas City. The company will also suspend their 401(k) matches, pay increases and tuition reimbursement program through 2009. The suspended tuition program is expected to heavily impact universities in the Kansas City area, who benefit from the large number of employees who take advantage of that program.

Engineering the Windows 7 Boot Animation

Steven Sinofsky: As we connect through this blog and through all of those talking about Windows 7 it is clear that folks have a lot of passion around many topics. We learned early on about the passion around the boot/startup sequence and how important it was for that to go by quickly! At the same time, we know that it is really dull to watch a HDD light blink when resuming a machine from hibernate or powering up a machine. To improve this first connection with people, we set out to improve the boot sequencejazz it up if you will. It sounds pretty easy, but as we looked into solving this we found it is a pretty significant engineering challenge. Our goal was to have fun while having no impact on the boot performance of the system. To explain this engineering and describe the boot sequence, Karen Wong, a program manager on our Core User Experience feature team, authored this post.

DreamWorks switches to Intel for stereoscopic 3-D high

For computer animation studios, upgrading long-in-the-tooth server farms is a part of a natural cycle to keep things looking sharp. But they're a bit like butterflies flitting amongst hardware specs when it comes down to finding what they want to power "the next big thing."

Witness: DreamWorks Animation has signed on the dotted line with Intel to toss the AMD chips they've previously been using for rendering flicks. The deal will see the studio replace approximately 1,500 Hewlett-Packard servers and 1,000 workstations using AMD processors with new HP systems based on Chipzilla's silicon. In other words, DreamWorks clicked a different button on HP's order form.

Lord Mandelson has clarified plans regarding the "three-strike policy" today, created in an effort to reduce piracy, according to the BBC. Whilst the plans were initially opposed by many, Lord Mandelson also mentioned some benefits the new plans will provide, such as relaxed copyright laws in regards to sharing. Lord Mandelson was speaking at the government's digital creative industries conference where he talked about the plans. He emphasised that cutting off users would be a last resort, and, addressing the fears of some, stated that users would be able to appeal any decisions to cut off their Internet access, if for instance, the disconnected user believed someone else was using their Internet connection.

ATI Reduces Support for Older Graphics Cards

As time goes on and a product catalog grows, it's not unusual for a company to reduce and eventually eliminate support for older products. In the case of ATI, AMD's graphics division, a new decision to reduce support for older graphics chips is about to take effect.

To date, ATI has provided a new WHQL certified driver every month to nearly every graphics card capable of DirectX 9 acceleration. That includes cards all the way back to 2002's Radeon 9700 Pro. After this month's Catalyst 9.3 release, that will not be the case...
