Intel to take 'Averill' to market as Centrino-like platform

Intel will next year launch its third branded PC platform, after Centrino and Viiv, this time pitched at corporate desktops.

As yet there's no word on the platform's go-to-market brandname, but it will almost certainly be based on Intel's 'Averill' platform. Averill was announced at the chip giant's Developer Forum in March this year for availability in 2006.

Averill is based on Intel's upcoming 'Broadwater' chipset, which will ship primarily as the 965 family, but also as the 946 and 963 product lines, it is believed. The platform also takes in Intel's next-generation Gigabit Ethernet controller, 'Nineveh', and its 65nm dual- and single-core Pentium D and Pentium 4 6xx processors.

No, Linux 85.4% vs. Windows 1% is not a typo, neither the result of erroneous information. Google's Android Market now taking paid apps

As the Android Developers Blog indicates, Google's Android Market, found on their Android mobile OS, is now accepting paid applications from developers in the US and the UK, and said applications will become available next week. Having the Android Market accept paid applications is an excellent step in providing an opponent for Apple's App Store, as many developers don't want to put time, money and effort into making applications that will given away for free. Allowing them to choose a price for their applications gives them incentive, and in turn will lead to growth of Google's store. The method of payment and billing for these applications will be via Google Checkout.

Does the Android Marketplace need a desktop client?

Ever since Google and T-Mobile launched the T-Mobile G1 users have been able to connect to the Android Marketplace to download applications both free and paid. Instead of the black and white interface, users were presented with a graphical interface to view and download the latest and greatest Android application from a host of developers.

The Android Market currently has about 50 applications, but that number should go up next week when Google opens the market to developers. Starting on Monday, any developer will be able to register for $25 and upload their application to the market. The registration and fee will help make sure that "each developer is authenticated and responsible for their apps," Google's Eric Chu wrote in a blog post on Thursday.

The first phone running Google's Android software, the G1, went on sale on Wednesday from T-Mobile in the United States. It costs $180 with a two-year contract.

Androinica reports that the moment you purchase the app, not install it, you are given 24 hours to decide if you like it, and also that if after that you wish to obtain a refund, you have to settle that with the developer and not with Google themselves.
