First Looks at Windows Vista Media Center
Microsoft's Media Center Edition of Windows XP has had a hard time. Though it's hard to call it a poor seller, MCE certainly has a market penetration that represents only a tiny fraction of the many millions of computers running Windows XP. And why should it? Most users don't have nice hi-def TVs hooked up to their PCs, or TV tuners, or really any need to enjoy their music, video, and TV stored on their PC via a 10-foot user interface. It doesn't help that the first edition of Media Center wasn't very good, either. Then again, Microsoft bounced back with its second effort, Media Center Edition 2005, one of the most improved software products ever.

09.11.2007A PC per child programme kicks off in UK
In September, Prime Minister Gordon Brown
announced details of a home access project allowing PC and internet access to families so that children can enhance their
learning at home.
The plan will see £300 million spent on providing computers and broadband internet to families. The Home Access
project will go nationwide next autumn and will ensure every 5- to 18-year-old has home access by 2011. Currently around a million children do have
access to broadband at home.
Schools Minister Jim Knight
detailed the steps which includes a year-long pilot scheme in Oldham and Suffolk. It will specifically target families that have
home broadband access but do not use the technology for their children’s benefit; can afford access but do not think technology has educational
value; cannot afford home access or need support in obtaining it.
Stephen Crowne, Chief Executive of Becta said "There's no question
that technology plays an increasing part of our everyday life at home and school. What we need to ensure is that every learner has an equal chance to
tap into the benefits of the internet to enhance their learning – and the Home Access programme seeks to do just that, by offering this
opportunity to all learners."

Steven Sinofsky: Weve blogged about a number of features related to home networking and media in Windows 7. A scenario which brings all these
together in a pretty cool way is Media Streaming. This scenario allows you to use a Windows 7 PC as a hub for media sharingwhere you can share media
with other PCs and devices on your home network via streaming, and even stream this information securely over the internet. Scott Manchester on the
Devices & Media program management team coordinated this post, but as you will see it represents work across the Core User Experience, Media Center,
Networking, and even Windows Live chose to take advantage of the new APIs in this scenario. This is a pretty detailed post and theres a lot to try
out. Those of you using the RC to test things out, you can always install on another PC and use it for the 30-day period without requiring a new PID
key. Have fun!

12.05.2009Windows Home Server Now Generally Available
Windows Home Server, a new solution to help families easily protect,
connect and share their digital media and documents, is generally available today. The
HP MediaSmart Server, powered by Windows Home Server software, is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com, Best Buy.com,
Buy.com, Circuit City.com and CompUSA.com. It will be shipped to customers and available via other leading retailer Web sites later in November.
Additional Microsoft hardware and software partners are also delivering new consumer products and solutions designed to work with Windows Home
Server.
Digital devices and content are everywhere in our day-to-day lives and they are more important all the time, said Bill
Gates, chairman of Microsoft. With the launch of Windows Home Server, Microsoft and its partners are creating a new consumer product category that
will help people keep their digital media safe and make it easier for them to enjoy it with friends and family.
Windows Home
Server is a stay-at-home server that delivers the benefits of powerful server technology used by many people at work within a simple, easy-to-use
solution for the home. It automatically backs up Windows XP-based and Windows Vista-based home computers each night, provides a central place to
organize digital documents and media, and includes a free Windows Live Internet address to access the home server from virtually anywhere and share
content with friends and family. It also monitors the health and security status of home computers and can stream media to other devices in the home,
such as Xbox 360, allowing people to enjoy digital music, photos and videos on their television.

05.11.2007At last, a bridge between Windows Home Server and Media Center
With this week's release of Power Pack 2 for Home Server, Microsoft is filling a very important gap. Up until recently, the company had been
maintaining that the place for users to store videos and multimedia was on their Media Center computers (generally Windows Vista Ultimate-based
systems), and the place for their "everyday files" was their Home Server. But the biggest and most cumbersome "everyday files" are multimedia
files, including those that deserve to be streamed and accessed by Media Center. While setting up Media Center to include a Home Server folder as one
of its "watch folders" is one option for getting files listed, that's not as rich as setting up a streaming connection...

20.06.2008Wireless Users 'do more online'
The Pew Internet and American
Life Project survey asked 798
US internet users about their
wireless habits and sampled
almost 2,300 people overall.
The margin of error for the
wireless questions was 3.8%
with 95% confidence. The
report characterised wireless
as connecting to the internet
using a wi-fi or mobile
network and found such users
" show deeper engagement
with cyberspace ." For
example, 54% of internet users
check e-mail daily compared to
72% of wireless users; 31% of
internet users checked news
online every day, compared to
just under half of wireless
users. Of those surveyed, 37%
of the category had connected
wirelessly from any location,
40% had laptops, 26% had
wireless networks at home, and
four in 10 had
internet-enabled mobile
phones.
People
under 30 were the most likely
group to access the internet
wirelessly. As well, the
survey found that the number
of internet users with
wireless at home nearly
doubled, from January 2005 to
December 2006. About 80% of
those with wireless access at
home also had broadband
internet. The report
speculated that wireless might
allow for high-intensity use,
which supported the idea that
" the key feature of mobile
communication is connectivity
and not mobility ". About
80% of laptops had wireless
capabilities and 88% of laptop
users said they had used a
wireless network at home. Just
over a third of laptop users
used a wireless network at
work. About six in 10 had
connected somewhere outside
their home or office.

16.07.2007Notebook Home Entertainment Center Guide
The notebook computer can serve two uses these days, one being standard duty for web browsing and stuff like that, and the other being the center of
your home theater system. Almost every full-size notebook sold today has a drive that can play DVD movies, but what most consumers don't know is that
if they have broadband, they have access to a huge online media collection.
Today we have pay services like iTunes or free online
streaming services like Hulu that give many users instant access to new TV shows and movies, many of which beg to be played on the big screen. This
guide will show what you need to connect your notebook to your home stereo and HDTV, and then outline services you can use to take advantage of this
new capability.

23.06.2008Review: Windows Home Server nearly ready for prime time
A typical household with two
adults and three children can
easily have three or more
computers. Since each of the
users wants access to the
Internet, their PCs are likely
to already be connected to a
router -- but sharing media
files and other data among the
computers often remains an
arduous task. What's more,
many users have enough
difficulty finding the time to
manage their own computer --
updating antivirus software,
configuring the firewall and
keeping downloaded files in
order -- that they pay little
or no attention to the other
PCs in the house. And that
means few of them get backed
up regularly, if at all.
Enter Windows Home
Server (WHS), announced at
this year's Consumer
Electronics Show in January.
WHS is a platform for storing,
sharing and protecting data
from multiple home PCs.
Additionally, it can stream
media, provide remote access
and monitor PCs on a home
network. The basic concept is
simple and logical, and any
household with more than one
PC already wants one...though
they may not know it yet.

02.03.2007Microsoft to Keep Windows Home Server Simple
Microsoft is targeting its
Windows Home Server at
mainstream consumers - the
average Joe. The operating
system is meant to run on its
own computer that backs up
data from all home computers
on a given network, streams
media (taken from Windows XP
Media Center Edition) and
provides remote access to
documents over the internet.
The software is obviously
aimed at households with at
least two other computers
which is a market Microsoft
estimates at about 40 million
to 45 million worldwide. Such
a device should retail between
$500 and $1,000,
depending on hardware,
especially hard disk drive,
specifications. The operating
system is based on Windows
Server 2003 and although it
borrows from other Microsoft
technologies, it has its own
unique ones as well.
" The goal is trying to
take the seams out
. There are too
many choices and too many
knobs and we ask too many
questions. And we expect the
people to know the answers to
every question. We are
designing the product for
families and the second-tier
purchaser, the enthused
follower who really looks at
the enthusiast for guidance.
The dream is that for
Father's Day, a wife would
buy one for her husband
because she understands the
benefits of backup and remote
access ," said Todd
Headrick, a senior product
manager with Microsoft.
