Full Review: Windows Vista December CTP

Love-him-hate-him Paul Thurrot has released a four part in-depth review of Vista's December CTP. "I think people are going to be surprised by how good the Windows Vista December 2005 Community Technical Preview (CTP, or build 5270) really is.

After years of painful delays and an uncertain couple of months since the last CTP, Microsoft shipped a near-feature-complete Vista build to testers this week, and the prognosis is extremely positive. From what I can see, Vista has turned the corner. The December CTP is an exciting release, stable and full of new features. In this review, I'll examine those new features, and the features that have changed since the previous CTP, build 5231"

Age of the cyber rifle

Perhaps a little too much of a reminder of the film Die Hard 4 for many readers - the BBC Technology page is reporting that the age of Cyber Warfare may be nearly upon us, at a grander scale than was first anticipated. Specifically outlined within the report was the need to ascertain exactly what is the driving force behind the majority of cyber attacks.

PC is the kids' choice for gaming

The NPD study, Kids & Gaming, found that the faithful PC "dominates as the top system used for gaming by kids of all age groups."

The study, conducted in August, also found that the average child started using "kid-oriented" systems (think Leapster) as a toddler, eventually moving to PC games at around age six, continuing through age 17, which is the longest term for any platform.

As kids grew older, they "migrated" to plug-and-play systems and other "more established" systems.

"...At about age 10, cell phone gaming begins, and the gaming lifecycle culminates with Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable, and the three next generation console systems (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii)," NPD stated.

What Silverlight can do for the Microsoft Download Center

If you’ve visited the Microsoft Download Center in the last month or so, you’ve probably been prompted with a pop-up asking you to try the Silverlight version of the site. Currently in beta, the new version of the MDC is meant to improve the user experience. Even if Silverlight has hit version 1.0, there is still no Linux, no Opera and no x64 support, which definitely hinders on who can visit the site. It is currently unclear whether Microsoft will completely replace the current site with the Silverlight version, but if that were to happen, it definitely would not be soon. Here’s a detailed article about what Qixing Zheng, from Microsoft Canada, believes Silverlight can do for the Microsoft Download Center.

Messenger Plus! 4.1 Released

After quite long delays on its release, since it was originally planned around the first beta release of Windows Live Messenger 8.1, Patchou finally put the final touches on the latest version of its popular Messenger Plus! add-on. Dubbed as version 4.10, the new version offers, among other improvements, support for 8.1's public beta, completely new translations, made from scratch, and a bunch of bug fixes.

There's no guarantee that this version will work with the final build, or eventual updates to the Beta of Windows Live Messenger 8.1. The improved version still works on Windows Live Messenger 8.0 and above, so it isn't limited to the upcoming 8.1 version.

Thanks to Boomiej for the heads up!

Ex-Google manager can sue for age bias

A 54-year-old former Google Inc. manager who claimed he was fired after a supervisor told him his opinions were "too old to matter" had his age discrimination lawsuit reinstated.

Reversing a Santa Clara County trial judge, the state's Sixth District Court of Appeal ruled Thursday that Brian Reid deserves to have a jury hear the evidence he amassed that he says shows Google routinely gave older managers lower evaluations and smaller bonuses than younger managers.

"Reid produced sufficient evidence that Google's (stated) reasons for terminating him were untrue or pretextual, and that Google acted with discriminatory motive such that a fact-finder would conclude Google engaged in age discrimination," Presiding Justice Conrad L. Rushing wrote.

Windows Live Messenger Goes Final and More

After a year in the making, the Windows Live Messenger production has come to an end, and to the delight of thousands of people.

The Download Page has been updated with build 353 (the final version) and is available for download now. It hasn't been extensively tested yet, but it's presumable that the countless bugs testers received in previous betas have been resolved; most notably several serious problems that were spotted when running it with Windows 7.

Complimenting the release of WLM 2009, the "Messenger Plus!" team has announced a release of the compatible (build 4.80) version of the patcher to be before the end of the month.

This seems promising. Hopefully the two will work well together, and we can FINALLY get what we've been asking for in the entire WLM experience.
