Office 12 to Feature 'Super Tooltips'
Tooltips, those little yellow popup boxes that provide information on a button or menu option, have become an indispensable part of the modern user interface. Now, Microsoft is looking to extend their usefulness by introducing what it calls "Super Tooltips" in the upcoming release of Office 12.
The next-generation Office suite from Microsoft is already slated to bring a major UI makeover. Standard toolbars have been replaced with task-oriented "Ribbons" that include features pertinent to the current job. But such a change will require a learning curve, which is where the new larger tooltips come in.

Canon U.S.A. Incorporated, the "Official Camera of the NFL" since 1984, has announced the launch of a Super Bowl sweepstakes. An advertisement
promoting the sweepstakes which will award one lucky winner at random (I wish the odds were a tad better than that) a trip for two to Super Bowl XLIII
in Tampa Bay in 2009, will begin appearing on January 14, both online and in print. Canon, the longest-tenured sponsor of the NFL, has lined the
football sidelines for years with both high-definition TV camera lenses and the white lenses used by professional photographers covering the game.

24.09.2008Experimental Super 3G network could reach 300Mbps
Japan-based NTT DoCoMo
announced today that it plans
to begin testing on an
experimental "Super 3G"
system for extra-high-speed
data on mobile devices.
The country's largest
mobile carrier said that it
hopes to achieve an impressive
300Mbps down in its tests over
the wireless network. The
company has already begun
accepting proposals from
suppliers and hopes to
implement the Super 3G system
in Japan by 2009.
The
company said that it planned
to start experimenting with
Super 3G in an indoor setting
with only one transmitting
antenna and one receiving
antenna. From there, NTT
DoCoMo plans to expand the
experiment by using four
Multiple-Input Multiple-Output
(MIMO) antennas on both the
transmitting and receiving
side. The ultimate goal will
be not only to achieve 300Mbps
down but also to look at how
well handovers will be handled
between towers.

The Super Bowl is one of the largest sporting events on earth. It attracts hundreds of millions of viewers each year and even more dollars will be
spent on advertising. Have you ever wondered what kind of technology is behind the curtains to make it all possible? This year NBC is leaving no
inch of the field uncovered. First off there will be "400 on-site production and engineering personnel" and they have put down over 50 miles of
fiber optic cable. There will be 35 high end Sony cameras using Cannon lenses to make sure every inch of game play is covered. Cameras will be
placed on everything from goal posts to outside the locker-rooms.

06.02.2006Surface used to coordinate Super Bowl Security
If you've been watching the news this week, you might have caught NFL security VP Milton Ahlerich saying that Raymond James Stadium in Tampa will be

being used to coordinate security forces around the site.
It's seriously slick -- maps are integrated with planning and voice
communications software so the field commanders can immediately assess incident responses and personnel deployments, with the ability to initiate
radio contact directly from the interface

30.01.2009Researchers Craft HDTV's Successor
High-definition TV may
still be far from the norm in
many countries, but that
isn't stopping engineers at
Japan's public broadcaster
from pushing ahead with
development of Super
Hi-Vision, a system they hope
will eventually replace HDTV.
Last week engineers at NHK's
(Nippon Hoso Kyokai) Science
and Technical Research
Laboratories showed off their
most recent work on the
technology.
A Super Hi-Vision (SHV)
picture is made up of 4,320
horizontal picture lines and
7,680 vertical lines. That's
four times the horizontal and
vertical resolution of current
HDTV or, put another way, a
single Super Hi-Vision image
is equivalent to 16 tiled HDTV
screens.
In the year
since it was last
demonstrated, the company has
developed an image sensor for
use in TV cameras that can
shoot an entire SHV screen...

29.05.2007Super Computer Powered by Bicycle
SiCortex is the first company to engineer a Linux cluster from the silicon up demonstrated
the opportunity for power savings in high-performance computing. The SC648 computer conducted complex genomics analysis at billions of calculations
per second while being powered by a team of 8-10 bicyclists.
The demonstration was shown at Wired NextFest. SiCiortex says that
power consumption has become one of the most important issues in supercomputing in the form of not only power required to operate the computers, but
also power required to cool the computers due to heat generated.
"Ten years ago, this analysis was impossible on even the
biggest computers, and now it's being done on a bicycle powered machine," said Mucci "Ten years from now, we'll probably be doing it right down at
the docks as they unload the ships. But these tools will only proliferate if we learn to design them to be sustainable." The computer used in the
demo was powered by bicyclists from the Jax Racing team using eight special Trek bicycles putting out 260W each.

14.09.2007It's super V-chip to the rescue of kids
The Senate Commerce Committee
approved legislation Thursday
asking the Federal
Communications Commission to
oversee the development of a
super V-chip that could screen
content on everything from
cell phones to the
Internet.
Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark.,
the sponsor of the Child Safe
Viewing Act, claims that the
new law is necessary because
content is no longer confined
to the TV or radio, and he
contends the same technology
that allows content to
increasingly migrate from
device to device also can be
used to empower parents.
"It's an
uphill battle for parents
trying to protect their kids
from viewing inappropriate
programming," Pryor said. "I
believe there is a whole new
generation of technology that
can provide an additional
layer of help for these
parents."..

28.10.2005Dancing atoms hold prospect of superfast computing
Suspended in laser light,
thousands of atoms pair up and
dance, each moving in perfect
counterpoint to its partner.
They are the building
blocks of what may one day
become an enormously powerful
quantum computer capable of
solving in seconds problems
that take today's fastest
machines years to crack, U.S.
physicists said on Wednesday.
"You can do the

classical calculations at the

Commerce Department's
National Institute of

NIST, whose work appears in
