Lure 'em with prizes. It's an age-old marketing method, which is why some CEOs still swear by it. Steve Ballmer, the chief executive of Microsoft who is said to be renowned for swearing, probably knows this all too well.

More than 1,200 pre-identified monikers have been chosen for February and more will be added for March and April. Choose the right one, Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) says, and potential loot includes a Target (nyse: TGT - news - people ) gift certificate, a Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ) LCD TV, or for the particularly lucky-cum-benevolent, a $10,000 cash award to a charity of choice.

23.02.2010Microsoft to replace MSN Groups with Windows Live Groups
Microsoft has been planning to remove MSN Groups and re brand them with Windows Live since the introduction of Windows Live. Now it seems Windows Live
Groups will launch on November 17th, replacing MSN Groups, set to close on February 21, 2009.
In an email
from a Microsoft Technical Support spokesperson, it is advised that Microsoft will be launching a service named
multiply to migrate MSN Groups to Multiply so that they can be preserved after MSN
Groups is closed in February.
Jonathan Yaniv, a Microsoft Windows Live Butterfly, has been doing some
digging around the Microsoft Windows
Live internal sites. Yaniv has found that you can now apply
new
themes to groups, stop people from
using your Group in
Windows Live Messenger to chat and Microsoft has implemented a
mailing list feature for group emails and an option to ban known spammers.
Below is an example of the new Windows
Live Groups set to launch next month (courtesy of

16.10.2008Windows Live Wave 3: Groups - More than just a stand-alone service
When people have talked so far about
Windows Live Groups, the premise has been that it will just be an upgrade to the existing MSN Groups, and something to compete
with Facebook. User creates a group, group can then share files, create a blog, interact via online comments etc etc.
However
this is somewhat short-sighted. Windows Live, is after all, about the interacting of service, and from what weve heard Groups is no exception. In
order to fully appreciate where Microsoft is taking its social networking strategy, it helps to look at something that emerged a few years ago, the
leaked MSN Wave 11 mockups. While most of what was shown has since been implemented, there is one critical piece that underpins the social networking
scenario Microsoft envisioned “ Circles.

13.05.2009IMDb Loses Advertisers Over Adult Listings
Barclaycard and The National
Lottery have pulled
advertisements from the
Internet Movie Database
(IMDB), one of the most
comprehensive movie databases
on the web, after their ads
were shown next to adult movie
listings. The move follows
recent similar action on
Facebook, when Vodafone and
several other companies pulled
advertising from the site
after appearing next to
profiles that violated company
policies. Other advertisers on
IMDB such as HP, Motorola, and
Hilton Hotels, all of which
host ads site-wide, seem to
have no problem with the adult
movie listings and have
announced no plans to change
or cease advertising on the
site.
Indeed,
Barclaycard believes it may
have overreacted and could
possibly restore ads to IMDB
soon. " The Internet Movie
Database seeks to list all the
movies which have ever been
made, including adult ones,
but by no stretch of the
imagination could it be
described as a porn
site, " said a Barclaycard
spokesman. " As company
policy, we seek to advertise
only on reputable websites and
temporarily removed our
adverts from this site while
we carried out a full
investigation and spoke to the
website. "
