Hopefully, by now you?ve seen from our posts that there are a lot of new features and work going into IE 7. As part of this update, we?re refreshing our icon and logotype. We considered more radical departures from our current logo, but blue ?e? with the ring is very recognizable and familiar to users, so we elected instead to make more subtle changes.

Intel going for a new logo(?)

The new Intel processor, codename 'Yonah', announced for the 3rd of January 2006, will according to X86-secret simply be called 'Core Solo' or 'Core Duo'. Depending on the amount of cores (no way! where did they come up with that). It's more than 10 years ago since Intel created ax X86-architecture CPU that wasn't called 'Pentium'. Machines with Centrino CPU's will also get a new sticker-logo from now on, saying only 'Centrino', without the real CPU name. The amount of cores will still be mentioned on the sticker.

Dell unlikely to be purchasing Acer in their buying spree

Dell's been on a bit of a buying spree recently; according to the head honcho, Michael Dell, they have a 'portfolio of acquisitions' that they're looking at to help boost earnings, but according to Bloomberg, this is unlikely to include the company Acer. As you may be aware, Acer is the third largest maker of personal computers, so it would certainly be a valuable purchase, but Brian Gladden (Chief Financial Officer for Dell) says that, "It would be very low on our list of opportunities." It's expected that Acer may surpass Dell in shipments, but Gladden brushed it off by stating, "That doesn't bother me at all. Selling netbooks that have zero margin, I'm not excited about.

Apple causes legal distress over revamped Woolworths logo

Halfway through last year, the company Woolworths Supermarkets announced that it was going to revamp its logo, in addition to making some other changes, altering the entire corporate branding strategy. The company chose an "an abstract leaf symbol" as the new logo, hoping things would be fine… but unfortunately, they weren't, particularly for Apple, Inc. AppleInsider has reported that the Cupertino-based company Apple, known mostly for the the iPod, the Mac, and the iPhone, believes Woolworths' logo is far too similar to its own, wanting it to be changed. Apple's had a history of legal battles with other companies over logo similarities, though it's expected for a company to want to defend its brand.

Windows 7 Ultimate cracked and activated with OEM master key

Windows 7 has yet to even be released officially to the general public, and already the dodgy folk on the Internet have fully cracked and activated the Ultimate version, with help from a leaked Lenovo OEM DVD .ISO file. The news comes from website My Digital Life who state that you can already pass Windows Genuine Advantage validation offline, OEM style. The leaked .ISO was originally posted on a Chinese forum, which was then downloaded in order for people to get hold of the boot.wim, and in turn retrieving the OEM-SLP key, plus the OEM activation certificate. Acer bets big on Linux

Acer has stated that it will be pushing Linux aggressively on its laptops and netbooks. The company is already heavily promoting Linux for its low cost ultra-portable netbook range out later this year, but senior staff have said that Acer will also push Linux on its laptops.

"We have shifted towards Linux because of Microsoft," he said. "Microsoft has a lot of power and it is going to be difficult, but we will be working hard to develop the Linux market."

Acer aces out Lenovo as world's third-largest PC maker

Of the 62 million PCs shipped in the first quarter of 2007, the biggest story is a company that shipped a little over 4 million units. Taiwan-based Acer has taken hold of 6.8 percent of the global PC market, good enough for third place, according to market research firm iSuppli.

After taking the No. 3 slot in worldwide notebook sales from Toshiba in the fourth quarter of 2006, Acer has taken even more ground, this time from Lenovo. The Chinese computer maker is now 0.4 percent points behind Acer in worldwide computer market share.

Acer also turned in the best growth performance of all the top five PC suppliers, according to the iSuppli report. Its shipments grew 45.8 percent to 4.2 million units, up from 2.9 million in the same quarter a year ago. ..

Acer's Growth Hiccups as Lenovo Reclaims World #3 PC Maker Position

We've been using the term "resurgent" in conjunction with Acer so often that you'd begin to think it was a brand name for a new PC model. But in the quarter just ended the surge failed, so to speak, as hardware analysis firm iSuppli reports unit shipments for Acer fell by 10,000 for the first time in several quarters.

For the second quarter of 2007, the "resurgent" tag belongs elsewhere: first to Lenovo, which responded to Acer's first quarter challenge with flying colors. Shipping 22.9% more units in the second quarter than it did in the first, Lenovo pumped out about 4.87 million PCs. In so doing, it bumped Acer in iSuppli's global Top 5 OEM list back down to #4, and took back 1.5% of market share.

And at last, the news actually looks good for Dell, which staked at least a partial claim to the "resurgent" title. It took back 1.1% of global market share, on what the company hopes will be its comeback trail, shipping about 9.5 million units worldwide.

Acer eclipses Lenovo, takes aim at Dell

Acer has passed Lenovo Group as the world's third largest PC vendor with its purchase of Gateway, and now it's gunning for U.S. giant Dell.
