13.09.2005Hands on: More Vista mysteries
Several readers have been puzzled by Access denied messages when they try to open certain folders in Windows Vista Explorer or from an applications
File Open or Save dialogue. For example, complained E Jones, C:Documents and Settings is not accessible. I do not understand why access to my own
documents should be denied.
Another reader was frustrated by her inability to add shortcuts to the Send to folder. Ive been
using this since Windows 95 and very useful it is too but how the heck do I open it?
There are a number of these folders
around that cant be opened, and they are distinguished by faint folder icons with an arrow overlay. You only see them if you have both Show hidden
files and folders ticked and Hide protected operating system files unticked in Folder Options, View.

In September, his app was denied by Apple for it being a "limited utility".

previously been denied, and hopefully means that we will see a greater selection of apps in the App Store soon!

City of Toronto disconnects workers from Facebook
The City of Toronto has banned
its 23,000 employees from
using the social networking
site Facebook on work
computers. Politicians,
however, are exempt from the
ban because they use Facebook
to communicate with their
constituents, accordiing to
city spokesman Brad Ross. A
week ago, the province blocked
access to Facebook on staff
computers. The site is also
banned in most federal
departments in Ottawa. Ross
said there's no sign that
city employees have been
wasting time on the site,
" but to mitigate that
possibility, we just simply
denied access. Does it serve a
purpose that a city staff,
city employee have access to
Facebook? Does it do anything
for the city? The answer would
have to be no ." Other
websites already deemed
unacceptable and banned by the
city include pornography
sites, gambling sites and
YouTube.

Comcast says not blocking Internet downloads
Comcast Corp said on Monday that file transfers on peer-to-peer networks such as BitTorrent may be delayed by bandwidth management technology, but it
denied blocking access to any applications or content. As the second-largest high-speed Internet provider in the United States with 11 million
customers, any move by Comcast to favor or block certain types of content moving over its network would be extremely controversial as it would be seen
as flouting net neutrality.

Neowin Introduces Neowin Members Mail
Today we are proud to launch Neowin Member Mail, powered by Windows Live Hotmail. This service is free and provides our members with one e-mail
address from a selection of custom (neowin) domains.
In order to further improve services to members, there are some handy links on the
Services page along with the option to sign up to our weekly news letter in conjunction with Techspot, you will start to see further improvements and services added to that page in due course. In short a one stop page for
services offered to our members and guest readers.
You will only be able to register one email to your member name here on Neowin, the name
suggested is your member name but you can choose anything -- it cannot be changed by Neowin staff later! Look for the small envelope at the top of the
page that will be across Neowin to access the email account and other services.
Note: When you first log in to your Neowin e-mail account,
it will suggest you setup a backup e-mail address. THIS IS SUGGESTED, as that is the only way you can have your password reset -- Neowin staff cannot
do this for you.
Update: A glitch in the code prevented members from signing up and limited access only to subscribers. This should be
corrected. If you attempted to create an email address and were denied access please try again.

Judge to plaintiffs in Yahoo lawsuit: Don't rush me
A judge denied a shareholders' request to accelerate the start of a trial over a lawsuit they filed alleging that Yahoo Inc. failed to protect their
interests by sabotaging Microsoft Corp.'s acquisition attempt.
The shareholders failed to prove that the court should expedite
the setting of a trial date, Judge William Chandler of Delaware's Chancery Court ruled yesterday.
"Aside from the maelstrom of
media coverage, very little has changed about plaintiffs' core contentions since I denied plaintiff's previous request for expedition," Chandler
wrote, pointing out that the plaintiffs had previously filed a similarly unsuccessful motion to expedite the case.
