applications. That said, lets begin.

17.07.2008Symantec: Microsoft Access ActiveX attacks will intensify
An easy-to-use toolkit used to hack computers has now been updated to take advantage of an unpatched security vulnerability in Microsoft's
software, which could mean attacks will intensify, according to vendor Symantec. The Neosploit toolkit is one of several on the Internet that can be
used by less-technical hackers to compromise machines. Symantec said it has detected on its network of Internet sensors that Neosploit can take
advantage of a vulnerability revealed early last week in Microsoft's Access database program.
"Further analysis of these honeypot
compromises has revealed that the exploit has been added to a variant of the Neosploit exploit kit, it will very likely reach a larger number of
victims," according to an entry on the company's ThreatCon advisory board. Microsoft hasn't patched the bug yet, and the company just issued
its patches for the month on July 8. The vulnerability is within the Snapshot Viewer ActiveX control, which launches a viewer for Microsoft Access
reports that doesn't require running the Access software itself.

I always think that its all very well and good having an opinion about something, or a subject you wish to talk about, but without anyone to listen to

if nobody is there to listen then you may go unheard. To this end, another part of a news reporter's job is to actively access the maximum
readership possible, basically anything short of going cold war, flying a microlight whilst dropping copies of the article.

06.07.2009Cisco fixes wireless security holes
Cisco has issued two sets of
patches that address a number
of security flaws in the
software used to manage its
wireless networking products.
One fixes flaws in the
Wireless Control System
software used to manage the
company's Aironet Lightweight
Access Points, Wireless LAN
Controllers, and Wireless
Location Appliance. The second
set of patches fixes bugs in
the Wireless LAN Controller,
which controls Aironet access
points as well as flaws in the
access points themselves.
These flaws could be exploited
to disrupt networking
services, gain access to
information, or even take
control of an access point.
The Wireless Control
System patch fixes
" multiple vulnerabilities
that can result in information
disclosure, privilege
escalation, and unauthorized
access ," the company said
in a security advisory. In its
second advisory, Cisco said it
has also patched flaws that
affect the Wireless LAN
Controller, the company's
Catalyst series switches, and
1000-series and 1500-series
models of the Aironet access
points.

13.04.2007Microsoft Office Access files targeted for attack
Online criminals are exploiting a flaw in the Microsoft Office Access database to install unauthorized software on computers, the United States
Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) warned Monday. In its brief warning, US-CERT offered few details on the attack, saying simply that the
organization is "aware of active exploitation" of the problem by criminals who have sent specially crafted Microsoft Access Database (.mdb) files to
victims.
These files are "designed for the sole purpose of executing commands," so they should not be accepted from untrusted sources,
Microsoft said in a note on its Web site. Run by the U.S. Department of Defense, US-CERT is charged with coordinating the nation's response to
cyberattacks. Companies typically block the use of .mdb files, but criminals could be using this attack in a targeted strike against an organization
that is known to use this particular file-type, said Ben Greenbaum, senior manager for Symantec security response. Symantec itself has seen no
evidence of the .mdb exploitation that prompted the US-CERT alert.

12.12.2007Yahoo readying free POP3 access?
Now that Windows Live Mail has joined the rest of the crew, most of major free email services available offer free POP3 access along with their
webmail access. Yahoo! Mail, however, has been resistant to this change, continuing to insist that users pay a yearly fee to obtain access to their
POP3 and forwarding options. This may, finally, be changing. Users that log into the Yahoo! Mail web interface, proceed to the mail options, and
attempt to view the options for POP3 will be presented with the following page: While this is purely speculative, it could signal that Yahoo! is
preparing to grant all of their Mail users access to POP3 and forwarding for free.

04.03.2009Vulnerability in the ActiveX Control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access
Microsoft is investigating active, targeted attacks leveraging a potential vulnerability in the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft
Access. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a specially crafted Web page. When a user views the Web page, the vulnerability
could allow remote code execution. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user.
The ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access enables you to view an Access report snapshot without having the
standard or run-time versions of Microsoft Office Access. The vulnerability only affects the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft
Office Access 2000, Microsoft Office Access 2002, and Microsoft Office Access 2003.
The ActiveX control is shipped with all
supported versions of Microsoft Office Access except for Microsoft Office Access 2007. The ActiveX control is also shipped with the standalone
Snapshot Viewer.
