IDF: Tera-Scale project and petascale challenges

As you walk along the three levels of West Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco, youll eventually come across five areas Intel has provided at IDF 2007 which relate directly to the Tera-Scale Project. Some of these are showcase research efforts where the public could physically go and speak to the engineers working on this technology. And one of them showed the actual Tera-Scale machine in full swing.

I dont think many consumers, or even members of the press, have yet realized the full potential or significance of Tera-Scale. In fact, I believe this research effort to be the biggest news coming out of Fall IDF 2007. While there are no new bits of information being showcased, Tera-Scale now consumes over 100 separate in-house projects and is the single biggest research effort at Intel for upcoming products.

Intel also recognizes Tera-Scales significance because they devoted an rather observable amount of floor-space to this un-marketable product at their event. But even so, I believe it needs to be more.

Domain name '.eu' open for business

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- The European Union planted its flag in cyberspace Wednesday when the ".eu" Internet domain name opened for business.

Until now, Europeans had to choose between a national domain such as ".fr" for France or a global one like ".com," which is often seen as American.

EU Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding said she expected several hundred thousand sign-ups for ".eu" in the first few days. National registries in some countries -- such as Belgium, home to the EU headquarters in Brussels -- are offering promotions to persuade Internet users to stay local.

But do Europeans want a ".eu" domain name? Some business groups are uncertain how popular it will be. Europeans have an EU flag, an EU passport and an EU anthem but many have a lukewarm attitude to European integration -- as French and Dutch "no" votes to a new constitution showed this year...

EU to free up spectrum for 3G services

The European Union is making more radio spectrum available for accessing Internet services over mobile phones, saying the use of lower frequencies would cut operators' costs and let them reach customers over a wider area.

The European Commission suggested allowing 3G services, also called UMTS, to access the 900 megahertz and 1800 MHz bands currently dedicated solely to voice and data services using older technology known as GSM.

That would mean 3G phone companies could use fewer mobile phone masts to reach more people, letting more customers use their phones to go online to check mail or stream video clips...

No Windows 7 upgrade option in the EU

Today Microsoft announced the pricing of Windows 7. As previously reported on Neowin, the EU will be getting a version that will not contain IE and because of this Microsoft will be offering no upgrade option in the EU. This harsh line comes as somewhat as a surprise that all EU users that wish to upgrade to Windows 7 must buy a full copy. There is a silver lining to this announcement and it's that the full price of Windows 7 will be at the equaliviant price to the upgrade option.

Intel Larrabee set for release in 2010

Information Week reports that during a conference at their headquarters, Intel spoke to analysts and reporters about their future energy-efficient products, including Larrabee and wireless solutions. Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO, also noted that Larrabee will be their "first tera-scale processor" and that it is aimed at a 2010 release, or possibly 2009 if things go especially smoothly.

Justin also reiterated that Larrabee will deliver "well in excess" of one teraflop of processing power. The company stressed the importance of their "path finding" process: previously, product development engineers were pretty much on their own guessing what design decisions made the most sense for the target timeframe.

In the company's newest initiatives, such as Tera-Scale, researchers and product development people are working much closer together. The researchers are also responsible for finding "the best use for newly developed technology in products"...

EU to continue anti-trust case, regardless of Windows 7 E

The recent shenanigans between the EU and Microsoft have been rather tedious; it's taken a long time for anything to happen, really, and Microsoft has even had to cancel a hearing once. However, with the recent introduction of Windows 7 E, many thought that the trouble would be over... but they were wrong. Nope, according to Ars Technica, the EU is still set on pursuing their anti-trust case with the Redmond company, despite them going out of their way to create a new SKU just for the region.
