Ignoring Web 2.0 Will Cost You

Jeff Lowe: From your applications in innovating to recruiting, IT execs that ignore social networking technologies could be hurting their company's bottom line. CIO Magazine has great insight on how companies are expecting to benefit.

The senior vice president at Serena Software says, "Not embracing social networking is like saying I'd rather hide my money under the mattress than put it in a bank. Companies make a big mistake when they prohibit these tools out of the sheer fear of what employees will say when they communicate with one another." Serena Software has implemented "Facebook Fridays" to encourage their 900 employees in 18 countries to connect with customers, partners, and each other over the company's group portal on the popular social networking site.

Editorial: Why don't we like video calls?

The title of this article came to me while I was browsing Wikipedia, a situation which I hope somebody can relate to where an article on a certain topic brings you eventually to something totally unrelated, with no relevance whatsoever to the original piece but still fascinating nonetheless. The need to click through endlessly to find out worthless facts is fascinating in itself, but ironically I've digressed. Where did it all go wrong for the pioneers of this fine technology? It's not like we never wanted it; indeed, many designs of the house-of-the-future famously incorporated some sort of video phone somewhere along the way, and advances in technology made video calling inevitable.

New web threat takes advantage of iFrame vulnerability, making its way to the U.S.

Security firm Trend Micro said that it has discovered a new threat that is currently making the rounds on the Internet. The threat is based on an iFrame vulnerability in webpage code to plant a keylogger to steal user passwords, or turn computers into proxy servers for various other attacks.

Trend Micro said that the threat could have originated from a computer Trojan-making kit and relies on a scenario in which website owners are unaware that they are compromised, and website users are unaware that surfing through seemingly legitimate pages can actually be part of an infection process. This process, according to the security firm, involves a malicious IP address that is inserted into the HTML code (HTML_IFRAME.CU), a download of malicious Trojans (TROJ_SMALL.HCK, TROJ_AGENT.UHL, TROJ_PAKES.NC, PAKES) from another URL via a JavaScript routine.

TrendMicro said that the threat was initially detected in Italy, but apparently is making its way to the U.S.

MSN Video share surges - Soapbox and Live Search doing well?

In the latest Compete traffic rankings for video services released today, MSN Video shows a marked improvement in October compared to September. Visits were up 25.3% to 35m, giving it almost 9% of the video market in 2nd place. In comparison YouTube/Google has almost 54%, with Yahoo coming 3rd, 0.5% behind MSN.

So what has caused this dramatic increase? Aside from it potentially being a random blip (MSN had a 7.5% decrease for the September/August numbers) it seems that there are two possible reasons for the change.

The first is that at the end of September MSN Soapbox was migrated from a stand-alone site to part of the new MSN Video portal. This addition of user generated content to the premium content traditionally hosted by MSN Video has given a slight rise in videos per user, from 1.60 in September to 1.65 using the October numbers. It looks like MSN Video managed to succeed in attracting new users to the site, so the November numbers should show whether MSN has managed to retain them for a 2nd month.

Microsoft Announces Game for Nintendo DS

Although we probably wont ever be seeing Mario on the Xbox, one of Microsofts latest franchises will be hitting a Nintendo system.

Microsoft announced at Comic Con that Viva Piñata is headed to the Nintendo DS. The title will be based off the current title for Xbox 360 (also slated for the PC later this year) rather than the Party Animals mini-games package. The Microsoft-owned game developer studio Rare will be handling the development of this title in-house.

Rare describes the upcoming title in a news update on its website, This is a full-size Viva Piñata game in your pocket, featuring not only the entire range of paper beasts from the Xbox 360 title but also a few new ones thrown in to spice things up for those familiar with the established cast...

Video: Microsoft demonstrates Multi-touch in Windows 7

Chris Flores: <...> Touch is quickly becoming a common way of directly interacting with software and devices. Touch-enabled surfaces are popping up everywhere including laptop touch pads, cell phones, remote controls, GPS devices, and more. What becomes even more compelling is when this experience is delivered to the PC -on a wide variety of Windows notebooks, in all-in-one PC's, as well as in external monitors. In working with our broad ecosystem of hardware and software manufactures, we're excited to be showing some of the great work and investments we are working on in Windows 7.

Tonight, at this year's D:All Things Digital conference, Julie Larson-Green showed Walt Mossberg how a few of the multi-touch innovations first previewed in Surface will ultimately enhance the next version of Windows. As soon as the video of Julie's demo is posted I will update this post. In the meantime, an abridged version of the demo can be found below. Please note, the applications you will see are for demonstration purposes only...but it's all Windows 7 underneath.

U.S. Consulate Web Site in Russia Breached

On September 10, the Web site for the U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg, Russia, was broken into and was serving up malicious iFrames, according to Sophos security researchers. After trying to load a malicious iFrame onto victims' systems from a remote server, the iFrame then attempted to silently load even more malware. The site, which has since been cleaned up, was actually only one of 400 compromised sites linking to two distinct malicious attack sites. The U.S. Consulate site was actually linked to both of those attack sites and was thus compromised with two malicious iFrames. One of the attack sites is hosted in the United States, while many of the compromised pages are in Russia.

Malicious script being loaded from the U.S. site tried to exploit several browser vulnerabilities in order to install a Trojan on victims' systems. Sophos says that the increasing use of automation to re-encrypt and obfuscate Trojans points to a need for a system to continuously monitor files in order to keep up with detection. " Automation is clearly being used-many script families are updated several times daily, and some of the notorious malware families are being rebuilt every 1-4 days ," SophosLab's Fraser Howard wrote in an August paper (PDF) titled "Modern Web attacks."
