23.12.2007The cost of all the Apps in the iWorld
Yesterday a journalist for Forbes.com named Elizabeth Woyke published an article stating how much it would cost if an individual wished to purchase
ALL of the some 55,000+ applications currently available through Apple's App.Store. Why anybody would wish to have all of the applications is
baffling, though you can be sure that some secretly rich prince has snapped them all up for his treasure chest of iPhones and iPod touches. The
number you're probably waiting for is: $144,326.06 This seems like quite a lot and way more than many would ever be prepared to invest for
the title of 'worlds most fanatic app Downloader'.

06.01.2008New web threat takes advantage of iFrame vulnerability, making its way to the U.S.
Security firm Trend Micro
said
that it has discovered a new
threat that is currently
making the rounds on the
Internet. The threat is based
on an iFrame vulnerability in
webpage code to plant a
keylogger to steal user
passwords, or turn computers
into proxy servers for various
other attacks.
Trend
Micro said that the threat
could have originated from a
computer Trojan-making kit and
relies on a scenario in which
website owners are unaware
that they are compromised, and
website users are unaware that
surfing through seemingly
legitimate pages can actually
be part of an infection
process. This process,
according to the security
firm, involves a malicious IP
address that is inserted into
the HTML code
(HTML_IFRAME.CU), a download
of malicious Trojans
(TROJ_SMALL.HCK,
TROJ_AGENT.UHL, TROJ_PAKES.NC,
PAKES) from another URL via a
JavaScript routine.
TrendMicro said that the
threat was initially detected
in Italy, but apparently is
making its way to the U.S.

19.06.2007U.S. Consulate Web Site in Russia Breached
On September 10, the Web site for the U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg, Russia, was broken into and was serving up malicious iFrames,
according to Sophos security researchers. After trying to load a malicious iFrame onto victims' systems from a remote server, the iFrame then
attempted to silently load even more malware. The site, which has since been cleaned up, was actually only one of 400 compromised sites linking to two
distinct malicious attack sites. The U.S. Consulate site was actually linked to both of those attack sites and was thus compromised with two malicious
iFrames. One of the attack sites is hosted in the United States, while many of the compromised pages are in Russia.
Malicious script being
loaded from the U.S. site tried to exploit several browser vulnerabilities in order to install a Trojan on victims' systems. Sophos says that the
increasing use of automation to re-encrypt and obfuscate Trojans points to a need for a system to continuously monitor files in order to keep up with
detection. " Automation is clearly being used-many script families are updated several times daily, and some of the notorious malware families are
being rebuilt every 1-4 days ," SophosLab's Fraser Howard wrote in an August paper (PDF) titled "Modern Web attacks."

18.02.2008Server 2008: The Windows Workstation we always wanted
Mary Jo Foley: As
discontent over Windows Vista (with or without Service Pack 1) continues to
swirl, Microsoft is gearing up to launch on February 27 the “other” Windows: Windows Server 2008. Even though it is built from the same
core as Vista, Windows Server is different from Vista in a number of ways, from its role-based configuration options, to its built-in hypervisor.
Guest blogger Jason Perlow (
of asbestos-underwear fame) has been an
advocate for Microsoft making Windows Server 2008 available as in workstation/desktop form. Like the old Windows NT and Windows 2000 Workstation
products, a Windows Server 2008 Workstation would be a form factor for power users who don’t need all the Vista desktop eye candy, but care more
about manageability and performance.

26.02.2008New proof: Office 14 slated for 2009
Mary Jo Foley: Even though Microsoft has yet to release a public test build of Office 14, it is tracking for a 2009 release and will likely be named
Office 2009.
Microsoft didn’t issue a press release announcing its plans. In fact, the company has been steadfast in
refusing to provide a date for when the next version of its Office family will ship. A few
previous leaks have pointed to 2009 as the target date, however.
The latest
information on Office 14’s scheduled ship date comes from
Microsoft’s Podcast
for SharePoint (PKS) Q&A on the CodePlex site. From
the Q&A (which I expect
Microsoft to edit shortly after I post this, so as to remove references to 2009)...
