10.7.2007Pwn2Own Hacker shares thoughts on Mac and PC security
You may remember that the Pwn2Own competition was run recently, designed to reveal hidden security flaws within browsers and operating systems.
Charlie Miller, who was one of the competitors in the competition, has come out with a rather controversial statement: Mac OS is theoretically safer
than PCs. In an interview with Tom's Hardware, Miller stated, "I'd say that Macs are less secure for the reasons we've discussed here
(lack of anti-exploitation technologies) but are more safe because there simply isn't much malware out there.

25.01.2009iPhone bug to hijack phone by SMS will be revealed tomorrow
Forbes is reporting that two researchers plan to reveal an un-patched iPhone bug that could virally infect phones via SMS. The hijack was discovered
by iPhone hacker Charlie Miller. Miller is a well known security researcher, famous for hacking a Macbook within seconds earlier this year at Pwn2Own
2009. Miller plans to unveil the attack methods during a talk he is holding at tomorrow's Blackhat security conference in Las Vegas. Miller
claims he is able to take over the iPhone with a series of malicious SMS messages. "This is serious. The only thing you can do to prevent it is turn
off your phone," Miller told Forbes.

07.09.2005Man pins child porn accusations on pet cat
Child porn is, understandably, a very serious offense; so much so that there's an entire TV show dedicated to catching those willing to have sex
with a minor, thus potentially also guilty of the first crime. As you can expect, people will do near anything to escape charges, though sometimes
they end up getting themselves into worse trouble than they initially were. One such example is a 48 year old man named Keith Griffin, as NBC Miami
reports, who told police that his cat was the one behind the 1000+ child porn images on his computer.

16.06.2009Researcher thinks Mac OS X is easy to exploit
Charles Miller is no stranger
to Apple and its products. In
July Miller and his colleagues
at Independent Security
Evaluators discovered the
first known vulnerability
within the Apple iPhone. They
then worked with the
Cuptertino vendor to release a
patch for iPhone. just the day
before the start of the annual
Black Hat Briefings in Las
Vegas. But all that good will
that didn't stop Miller from
talking about pending problems
lurking deep within the Mac
OS. "Macs," he said, "are
as easy to hack as they are to
use."
During a 20-minute Turbo
talk, "Hacking Leopard: Tools
and techniques for attacking
the newest Mac OS X," Miller
said that for some reason the
Mac OS has over 50 plus suid
root programs, including a few
odd ones such as Locum,
NetCfgTool, and
TimeZoneSettingTool. Given the
root access provided by these
tools they provide at least
one vector for attack.

21.12.2005MacBook hacked in seconds, again
May people may remember Charlie Miller from last year's event where he successfully hacked a MacBook and was able to take control over it within
seconds, walking away with the MacBook and the grand prize. Charlie Miller once again successfully hacked the fully patched MacBook by exploiting a
security vulnerability in Safari, Apple's web browser. The hack was accomplished by the team clicking on a link that took control of the machine
within seconds. Charlie Miller walked away with the MacBook and the $10,000 top prize after successfully hacking the MacBook the fastest.
TippintPoint's Zero Day Initiative has acquired exclusive rights to the vulnerability, and will work with Apple to patch the flaw.

many with kid-friendly tags such as "Jonas Brothers" and "Hannah Montana". The clips however, while possessing 30 seconds of normal content at the
beginning, were predominantly explicit. The attack is being dubbed the "Porn Day" attack by the culprits, users of the website "4chan". Google
has said that it is aware of the attacks, are is taking the appropriate action. Unfortunately, thumbnails may remain on the website for up to a week
while Google removes the offending material.

24.05.2009Experts warn of Windows 7's abilities to encrypt child porn
Windows 7 can allow potentially incriminating data (such as child pornography) to be encrypted on a user's hard drive and make detection by police
"impossible", experts in Australia claim. Speaking to News.com.au, Hetty Johnson, a member of the Federal Government, called on Microsoft to act now
and make immediate changes. "If this new product gives paedophiles protection to keep harming children I would be extremely disappointed. I would
expect the company to take moves to rectify this." Australian law states that authorities can obtain warrants to use a Trojan horse to gain access
to a computer's data, but unlike British law, refusing to decrypt data when requested by the police is completely legal.

28.10.2009Some UK ISPs have not blocked child porn sites
Children's charities in the UK have expressed what they call "serious concerns" that some Internet service providers have still not blocked
websites showing child sex abuse. The British government asked ISPs to block child porn, according to a list provided by the Internet Watch
Foundation, before the end of 2007. However, 5 percent of broadband suppliers in the UK are still not blocking sites listed by the IWF. According to
BBC News, the NSPCC's Zoe Hilton said, "Allowing this loophole helps feed the appalling trade in images featuring real children being seriously
sexually assaulted.

24.02.2009How The iPhone Was Cracked
The big iPhone hack has now
been publicly presented. Too
bad for the bad guys that
Apple already patched by the
bug, or have they?
Charlie Miller, a
researcher with Independent
Security Evaluators, took the
stage at Black Hat Thursday
and explained explained in
line-by-line detail how he
exploited the iPhone and why
the Mac Operating system that
powers the iPhone is easy to
attack.
Though speaking at Black
Hat Miller noted that he told
Apple about the exploit early
on.
"I
gave them the exploit before
anyone else, I gave them the
content of the talk and I gave
them a patch too," Miller
told the audience. "I told
them to have the patch out by
august 2nd when I was giving
the talk, they needed to do it
and they decided to do it."

After ten years of the anti-porn law that was under the Child Online Protection Act, stopping minors from viewing harmful content over the internet,
silently died off in the Supreme Court after Congress overwhelmingly approved the law ten years ago. "For over a decade the government has been
trying to thwart freedom of speech on the Internet, and for years the courts have been finding the attempts unconstitutional," said Chris Hansen,
star of To Catch a Predator on Dateline MSNBC. To help strengthen the case to keep the law alive, the Justice Department subpoenaed major Internet
service providers in 2006.

22.01.2009Facebook: More Popular Than Porn
Perhaps a more interesting — and more accurate — way to figure out where college students are going online is to assess which of the 172
web categories tracked by Hitwise get the most hits from 18- to 24-year-olds. Heres a shocker: Porn is not No. 1. Ive actually been puzzled by the
decrease in visits to the Adult Entertainment category over the last two years. Visits to porn sites have dropped from 16.9% of all site visits in the
U.S. in October 2005 to 11.9% as of last week, a 33% decline. Currently, for web users over the age of 25, Adult Entertainment still ranks high in
popularity, coming in second, after search engines. Not so for 18- to 24-year-olds, for whom social networks rank first, followed by search engines,
then web-based e-mail — with porn sites lagging behind in fourth.

on helping teens with problems large and small, but about the same amount of time they spend downloading music. Topics such as cosmetic surgery,
dieting, family planning, and health are individually the focus of more than an hour a week's worth of viewing.

18.12.2007Deploying Windows in a Virtual World
Matt Graven:
Virtualization is an
important technology that most every infrastructure should be taking advantage of. It reduces hardware dependence by essentially creating a hardware
abstraction layer. But while the deployment of virtual systems doesn't have to be different than the deployment of physical systems, there are some
good reasons for why you should make it different.
In the December installment of "The Desktop Files", Wes Miller
explains how to
set up virtualization in your
organization, how to avoid the most common pitfalls, and how to deploy virtualization across a number of machines in your environment.
You'll learn how to use
Sysprep, efficiently manage drivers, and gracefully handle unique values such as MAC addresses.
