Kim Talks Halo 3 and Second Wave
Microsoft Game Studios general manager Shane Kim has been talking to Next Generation about Halo 3, the second wave of Xbox 360 games and lessons learned from the recent platform launch.
We caught up with Shane Kim at the recent DICE summit to talk about the various issues surrounding first and third party Xbox 360 development. Not surprisingly, we wanted to talk about Halo 3, but Kim points out there's a whole lot more going on at Microsoft than that game...

23.07.2007Robert Anderson: I Was a Hacker for the MPAA
Promises of Hollywood fame and fortune persuaded a young hacker to betray former associates in the BitTorrent scene to Tinseltowns anti-piracy lobby,
according to the hacker.
In an exclusive interview with Wired News, gun-for-hire hacker Robert Anderson tells for the first time how the
Motion Picture Association of America promised him money and power if he provided confidential information on TorrentSpy, a popular BitTorrent search
site.
According to Anderson, the MPAA told him: "We would need somebody like you. We would give you a nice paying job, a house, a car,
anything you needed.... if you save Hollywood for us you can become rich and powerful."
In 2005, the MPAA paid Anderson $15,000
for inside information about TorrentSpy -- information at the heart of a copyright-infringement lawsuit brought by the MPAA against TorrentSpy of Los
Angeles. The material is also the subject of a wiretapping countersuit against the MPAA brought by TorrentSpys founder, Justin Bunnell, who alleges
the information was obtained illegally.

07.12.2006Domain name '.eu' open for

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP)
-- The European Union planted
its flag in cyberspace
Wednesday when the ".eu"

Until now, Europeans had to
choose between a national
domain such as ".fr" for
France or a global one like
".com," which is often seen

EU

local.
But do
Europeans want a ".eu"

popular it will be. Europeans
have an EU flag, an EU

many have a lukewarm attitude
to European integration -- as
French and Dutch "no" votes

this year...

04.10.2007MySpace Cofounder Tom Anderson Was A Real Life "WarGames" Hacker in 1980s
Late last year we discovered that MySpace cofounder Tom Anderson, arguably the most popular individual on the Internet with 240+ million MySpace
friends (he is added by default to every MySpace account) was
actually 37 years old, not the 32 that he
continues to claim on his
MySpace page.
Now we’ve learned a much more colorful part of Anderson’s
history: In 1985, when he was fourteen and in high school in Escondido, California, Anderson was subject to one of the largest FBI raids in California
history after hacking into a Chase Manhattan Bank computer system and subsequently showing his friends how to do it. He was never arrested because he
was a minor, but the FBI confiscated all of his computer equipment and some newspaper accounts of the incident stated incorrectly (see image below
from a 1986 LA Times story) that he was
“convicted in federal court of computer hacking and placed on probation” (the statements
were corrected in subsequent articles). Anderson used the hacker name “Lord Flathead.”

25.06.2009Microsoft's Shane Kim Talks of Xbox 360 Price Cuts
Many expected Microsoft to

E3. For those that labored

there was no such
announcement. So if you were
disappointed with Microsoft's
E3 keynote and the
announcement of a Halo

According to
Microsoft Game Studios VP
Shane Kim, a price cut is in
store for the Xbox 360 game
console. In an interview with
Bloomberg, Kim talked of competing
with the Nintendo Wii and
revealed that "We need to
compete effectively for that
customer and part of that is
getting to the mass market
price point for the console.
We definitely are working on
that area."
Kim
declined to give a date for
when the price cut would
occur, but a holiday 2007
price cut would do wonders for
the platform along with the
release of Halo 3 and Grand
Theft Auto 4. The timing
depends on a lot of different
factors and we'll just keep
evaluating those, said

07.04.2006We won't kill off the Xbox 360
In an interview with 1UP,
Microsoft's Shane Kim has
reassured gamers that the
company will not 'kill off'
the Xbox 360 as it did with
the original Xbox, and that it
hopes its current console will
have the staying power of
Sony's PS2.
"If
we could have a PS2-like tail,
that would be awesome for the
Xbox 360. I don't think
you're going to see the same
abrupt move to the
next-generation," Kim says.
"We'll have a much more
balanced approach when the
next-generation arrives."
Once the Xbox 360
launched worldwide at the end
of 2005, Microsoft had already
dropped all software support
for the Xbox and third parties
quickly followed suite -
though by its own admission
Microsoft never planned on
leading that particular
console race, and the decision
was made to launch its next
console ahead of the
competition.
"We
knew we weren't going to win
the last generation, so it's
not about 'How do we milk as
much money as we can out of
the last generation', it's
about how do we define the
future," says Kim. "That's
what winning the
next-generation is all
about."

11.04.2007Ex-Apple CFO Blames Backdating on Jobs
Apple CEO Steve Jobs told
former Chief Financial Officer
Fred Anderson to backdate
stock options, according to a
statement issued Tuesday by
Anderson's attorney. The U.S.
Securities and Exchange
Commission reached a
settlement with Anderson in
the stock-options case and
also charged former Apple
general counsel Nancy Heinen
with fraudulently backdating
options. An internal Apple
audit found that Jobs was
aware of the backdating, but
that he did not financially
gain from it and did nothing
wrong.
According to
Anderson, he was told by Jobs
in late January 2001 that Jobs
had an agreement with the
board of directors to grant
stock options on January 2.
Anderson " cautioned "
Jobs that the grant for
executives would have to be
priced based on the date of
the board agreement " or
there could be an accounting
charge ," and also told
Jobs the board would have to
confirm it had given prior
approval for the grant dates
" in a legally satisfactory
method ." Jobs assured him
that the board had given
approval and Anderson
" relied on these
statements by Mr. Jobs and
from them concluded the grant
was being properly
handled ." According to
the SEC case filed today in
U.S. District Court for the
Northern District of
California, both Heinen and
Anderson personally received
millions of dollars in
unreported compensation
through the backdating.
