Man pins child porn accusations on pet cat

Child porn is, understandably, a very serious offense; so much so that there's an entire TV show dedicated to catching those willing to have sex with a minor, thus potentially also guilty of the first crime. As you can expect, people will do near anything to escape charges, though sometimes they end up getting themselves into worse trouble than they initially were. One such example is a 48 year old man named Keith Griffin, as NBC Miami reports, who told police that his cat was the one behind the 1000+ child porn images on his computer.

YouTube swamped by porn

Reports indicate that YouTube was swamped yesterday by an abundance of pornography. A large group of users began uploading seemingly innocent clips, many with kid-friendly tags such as "Jonas Brothers" and "Hannah Montana". The clips however, while possessing 30 seconds of normal content at the beginning, were predominantly explicit. The attack is being dubbed the "Porn Day" attack by the culprits, users of the website "4chan". Google has said that it is aware of the attacks, are is taking the appropriate action. Unfortunately, thumbnails may remain on the website for up to a week while Google removes the offending material.

Experts warn of Windows 7's abilities to encrypt child porn

Windows 7 can allow potentially incriminating data (such as child pornography) to be encrypted on a user's hard drive and make detection by police "impossible", experts in Australia claim. Speaking to News.com.au, Hetty Johnson, a member of the Federal Government, called on Microsoft to act now and make immediate changes. "If this new product gives paedophiles protection to keep harming children I would be extremely disappointed. I would expect the company to take moves to rectify this." Australian law states that authorities can obtain warrants to use a Trojan horse to gain access to a computer's data, but unlike British law, refusing to decrypt data when requested by the police is completely legal.

Some UK ISPs have not blocked child porn sites

Children's charities in the UK have expressed what they call "serious concerns" that some Internet service providers have still not blocked websites showing child sex abuse. The British government asked ISPs to block child porn, according to a list provided by the Internet Watch Foundation, before the end of 2007. However, 5 percent of broadband suppliers in the UK are still not blocking sites listed by the IWF. According to BBC News, the NSPCC's Zoe Hilton said, "Allowing this loophole helps feed the appalling trade in images featuring real children being seriously sexually assaulted.

Anti-porn online law dies quickly in Supreme Court

After ten years of the anti-porn law that was under the Child Online Protection Act, stopping minors from viewing harmful content over the internet, silently died off in the Supreme Court after Congress overwhelmingly approved the law ten years ago. "For over a decade the government has been trying to thwart freedom of speech on the Internet, and for years the courts have been finding the attempts unconstitutional," said Chris Hansen, star of To Catch a Predator on Dateline MSNBC. To help strengthen the case to keep the law alive, the Justice Department subpoenaed major Internet service providers in 2006.

Facebook: More Popular Than Porn

Perhaps a more interesting — and more accurate — way to figure out where college students are going online is to assess which of the 172 web categories tracked by Hitwise get the most hits from 18- to 24-year-olds. Heres a shocker: Porn is not No. 1. Ive actually been puzzled by the decrease in visits to the Adult Entertainment category over the last two years. Visits to porn sites have dropped from 16.9% of all site visits in the U.S. in October 2005 to 11.9% as of last week, a 33% decline. Currently, for web users over the age of 25, Adult Entertainment still ranks high in popularity, coming in second, after search engines. Not so for 18- to 24-year-olds, for whom social networks rank first, followed by search engines, then web-based e-mail — with porn sites lagging behind in fourth.

UK teens 13-15 view over 86 hours of online porn a year

According to TechRadar, more than one thousand Britons aged 13 to 15 took part in a OnePoll poll of online browsing habits, and it turns out that, on average, each teen spends about 100 minutes a week viewing online porn--nearly 50% more time than they do visiting the Samaritans, a charity focused on helping teens with problems large and small, but about the same amount of time they spend downloading music. Topics such as cosmetic surgery, dieting, family planning, and health are individually the focus of more than an hour a week's worth of viewing.

US tax payback spent on porn

President Bush’s economic stimulus plan, which involved sending out checks of up to $1,200 to every taxpayer, has provided a boom to the online porn industry, according to market research. Research by the Adult Internet Market Research Company (AIMRCo) has found that since the checks were sent out there has been an uncharacteristic increase in spending for online pornography sites.

According to Kirk Mishkin, head research consultant for AIMRCo, "Many of the sites we surveyed have reported 20-30 per cent growth in membership rates since mid-May when the checks were first sent out, and typically the summer is a slow period for this market." The checks were suppose to be used to provide a stimulus to the flagging US consumer sector but the research found many people were using them for a different kind of stimulation.

Do You Care About IE 8?

This morning, my editor asked why I hadn't blogged about Internet Explorer 8. My response: "Who cares?" Do you? Maybe we both should. For weeks, Microsoft has been dribbling out information about IE 8, which has to be released as a public beta this week to make the self-pronounced August release. The most recent IE 8 blog post discusses new privacy features.

In rereading the post, from yesterday, Aug. 25, I'm thinking that I should have cared more about IE 8. Ridiculous blogs have interpreted new IE 8 privacy features as "porn mode." That's a dramatic mischaracterization of privacy enhancements that are arguably trendsetting. IE 8 will give users more control over privacy than any other browser. It's not "porn mode" but something much bigger. After deciding to write this post, I IMed my editor: "Someone should send dunce caps to ... every other blogger using that term. Idiots." I wanted to say something else, but, hey, there's nothing private about instant messaging.

Mobile porn to hit $3.5bn by 2010

Revenues from mobile 'adult services' are set to approach $3.5bn by 2010, according to a new report.

Juniper Research said that growth will be fuelled by increasing adoption of streamed video and video chat, and a sharp rise in the adoption of 3G services.

A significant proportion of new revenues are expected to come from the relatively underdeveloped North American markets, despite restrictions on on-portal content.

"While operators in the US and Canada are still very reluctant to introduce age-verification systems and offer adult content, it is a completely different story off-portal," said report author Dr Windsor Holden.

Fox News: Bing is free porn portal

Fox News has come forward with criticisms of Microsoft's recently unveiled search engine Bing, claiming that it provides "a cornucopia of pornography" and that it is easy to transform "the search engine into very own pornographic Web site." Particularly troubling for Fox News is Bing's autoplay feature, which allows visitors to preview "explicit pornographic" (and other) videos without having to leave the search engine.
