Microsoft to contest "unjustified" EU move
Microsoft said on Thursday it would contest what it called an unjustified European Commission decision to impose backdated daily fines if it fails to comply with European Union antitrust sanctions.
The U.S. software giant said it had obeyed the Commission's landmark March 2004 decision ordering it to change its business practices but the EU executive kept making new demands and the latest one went beyond the European regulator's powers.

05.09.2009'Internet Van' played key role in evolution of the Web
If not for this nondescript, gray van with the letters "SRI" painted on the side, you likely wouldn't be reading this article right now.
Parked feet from the entrance of the Computer History Museum here in the heart of Silicon Valley, the vintage van is being feted at a
celebration marking the very first true Internet connection.
The first Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)-based transmission
between three separate networks--ARPANET, packet radio, and satellite--was made possible by the van, which was built by the research and development
agency SRI International. It was driven for the first time on November 22, 1977. The same van was the key to the first packet radio network, which was
the first mobile digital radio network, a precursor to Wi-Fi and other wireless networks we have today.

30.11.2008Domain name '.eu' open for
business
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP)
-- The European Union planted
its flag in cyberspace
Wednesday when the ".eu"
Internet domain name opened
for
business.
Until now, Europeans had to
choose between a national
domain such as ".fr" for
France or a global one like
".com," which is often seen
as American.
EU
Information Society
Commissioner Viviane Reding
said she expected several
hundred thousand sign-ups for
".eu" in the first few days.
National registries in some
countries -- such as Belgium,
home to the EU headquarters in
Brussels -- are offering
promotions to persuade
Internet users to stay
local.
But do
Europeans want a ".eu"
domain name? Some business
groups are uncertain how
popular it will be. Europeans
have an EU flag, an EU
passport and an EU anthem but
many have a lukewarm attitude
to European integration -- as
French and Dutch "no" votes
to a new constitution showed
this year...

"represents what a Land Rover does in Africa," said Vinton Cerf, who headed the project for the U.S. Department of Defenses Advanced
Research Projects Agency. "It helped us explore terrain that didnt have any roads." Filled to the brim with some of the most advanced
technology of its day, the "Internet van," as it has since been nicknamed, would drive up and down Interstate 280 in the San Francisco Bay
Area, broadcasting data at 100 to 400 kilobits per second. Data was sent from the van to various points around the world, including Los Angeles;
Cambridge, Mass.; Sweden; and England--through telephone lines, and routed between satellites.

08.11.2007EU slaps Intel with formal antitrust charges
As suspected, the European
Union formally lodged
antitrust charges against
Intel, accusing the CPU maker
of using illegal methods to
compete against its main rival
AMD. "I can confirm the
statement of objections has
been sent," European
Commission spokesperson Ton
Van Lierop said in a statement
given to Reuters. This action
represents the culmination of
years of antitrust
investigation by the EU-and is
likely beginning of a very
unpleasant experience for
Intel. While the exact
Statement of Objection (SO)
has not yet been made public,
the EU charges that Intel used
illegal methods to coerce OEM
computer manufacturers to ship
systems with Intel rather than
AMD processors.
The
investigation in Europe has
been going on for a long time.
Intel's European offices were
raided by EU investigators in
2005. Last year, AMD filed a
formal complaint with the
Bundeskartellamt, the German
Federal Cartel Office,
accusing a German and Intel of
entering into an agreement
under which the German
retailer would only sell Intel
PCs in exchange for
undisclosed payments from
Intel. The EC quickly took
over that investigation from
the
Bundeskartellamt .

the equaliviant price to the upgrade option.
