05.09.2009UK government drops 'Orwellian' database plans
As reported here last year, in its efforts to stop terrorism and the crimes of fraudsters and paedophiles, the UK government had been floating the
idea of devising a central database to contain records of all Internet activities that passed through the country. As is the norm for the UK
government, potential policies are given a public airing of sorts, to see how people react. This may or may not influence what the government
eventually decides to do. In the case of the national database, the government has backed down, largely thanks to the complaints of those who argue
that it would have negative effects on privacy and civil liberty.

EnterpriseDB Inc. plans in March to start beta-testing an online version of its Oracle-compatible database that will leverage

Zurek added that EnterpriseDB, which bases its

MySQL open-source technology that
Sun
Microsystems Inc. recently

NBC Universal Digital Studios Launches Fresh Original Content on MSN
MSN and NBC Universal Digital Studios today announced the launch of a new online series, The Celebrity Pet Dish (http://originals.msn.com/CelebrityPetDish), following the success of A Big
Life With Sissy Biggers (http://abiglife.msn.com), which is also produced by NBCU Digital
Studios and is soon to debut its third season on MSN. Beginning Oct. 18, the MSN® Video audience will have exclusive access to The Celebrity Pet
Dish, a weekly destination for owners of pampered pets, hosted by pet author and expert Nikki Moustaki. The show will be sponsored by Eukanuba.
We're excited to bring The Celebrity Pet Dish to the large MSN audience of video consumers, said Matthew Evans, vice president,
Digital Media, and head of NBC Universal Digital Studios. Celebrities are pet lovers like the rest of us, just on a slightly different scale. From
pet psychics to rhinestone-studded carrying bags, this show reveals the glamorous lifestyle of celebrity pets. Many pet owners love their pets and
celebrity news almost equally, and The Celebrity Pet Dish is where those worlds meet.
The three debut episodes will cover
luxury pet vacations, personalized pet gifts, pet etiquette courses, Halloween costumes, pet-inspired wines and beer and favorite pet Web sites. In
addition, Nikki will post a weekly blog, and users will be encouraged to send in their own celeb pet sightings, photos and cutting-edge pet trends.

Live Search for Celebs
Want to get all the details on your favorite celebrity? Live Search's Celebrity search
results combine top content into a single, interactive answer, providing content from images, video, movies, bio, and more. The celebrity's
xRank is also intergrated into the results to provide a measure of popularity. xRank is a fun way to track celebrities' rises and falls in the
rankings. Based on the number of searches throughout the day, xRank gives a numerical rating for the most popular of Hollywood
heavyweights, radio darlings, trendsetters, athletes, politicians, and other notables.
It's "Hot or Not" for search
results. On the Celebrity xRank page, you can not only do searches for celebrities, but you can also scan the rankings, read bios, track
trends, and see related celebs (the celebrity's friends, family, co-workers, enemies, and romantic interests). Icons next to a celebrity's name show
whether the celebrity is Trending up - popularity is increasing (green up arrow), slipping down - popularity is decreasing (red down arrow), rocketing
up - popularity is soaring (green up arrow with flames), or plummeting down (red down arrow towards a black hole). What do you think of Live Searhc's
celebrity search feature? Do a head to head comparison like I did for one of my favorite celebs and compare the
results. In my case, I actually preferred Live Search's results. Do you?

Open Source Database Adoption Upswing Continues
Open source database adoption will continue its growth, despite the fact that rip and replace situations with Oracle, IBM and Microsoft databases are
often few and far between.
The open source database market is continuing its upswing, and shows no signs of slowing down.
A market update by Forrester Research puts the value of the open source database market at $850 million, which includes software
licensing, technical support and services. By 2010, the authors of the report estimate that figure will jump to $1.2 billion as enterprises look to
open source databases to support Web 2.0 applications and other workloads.

Maybe Microsoft's gonna be the one that saves me
Microsoft's MSN together with BermanBraun Interactive yesterday launched Wonderwall.com, a celebrity gossip site like the popular TMZ.com or People.com. Sites like these are in no short supply,
but neither is their demand. Yahoo's top ten search terms overall are consistently dominated by celebrity names. 2008's top 10 from Yahoo,
for example, included Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, and Angelina Jolie. Google Zeitgeist year-end summaries have shown the celebrity
search trend every year since 2001.
BermanBraun was founded in 2007 by ex-Paramount Pictures executive Gail Berman, and former Disney, ABC
and Yahoo executive Lloyd Braun. The company focuses on providing the content and advertising on the site, MSN handles the rest...
