OLPC achieves 2km range in 802.11s tests

A tester for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project has tested wireless technology using the 802.11s 'mesh networking' pre-draft in Australia's outback and achieved distances of 2km.

In a http://www.zdnet.com.au/video/ 0,2000065477,22170756p,00.htm> video interview with ZDNet Australia at the AusCERT 2007 conference in Queensland last week, OLPC's director of security architecture Ivan Krstić said the Outback provided "close to perfect conditions".

Krstić said OLPC decided to go with the pre-draft 802.11s technology because it made the most sense for the project...

The future of wireless networking in Windows 7

Long Zheng: Its rare for a week to go by without a few interesting Microsoft job advertisements. One of which posted last week provides a pretty good idea at how the next version of Windows will improve the wireless networking experience.

Vista was about making Wi-Fi connections as seamless, manageable and secure as wired networks.

The next Windows version is really about taking Wireless networking to the next level by enabling new complete end to end scenarios and experiences that are going to change how windows PCs interact with each other and other devices and nodes over a wireless network.

As a part of the Windows Networking Ecosystem Technologies team, you will be working on scenarios around virtualizing Wireless to allow connections to multiple networks simultaneously. You will be working on enabling new windows to windows connectivity paths within a wireless network to improve wireless throughput and latency. You will be working on wireless-only office and mesh networking scenarios that will make setup and management of wireless networks quick and inexpensive with the goal to reduce TCO for centrally controlled and secured deployments by improving manageability, performance and reliability.

As a part of this work, you will be working closely on existing and in-works wireless standards such as IEEE 802.11s, 802.11k, 802.11r, 802.11w. This position will provide you the unique opportunity of working on core wireless areas as well as collaborating with several other key Windows technologies to deliver a complete functional end to end scenario. The work will be in both the Windows kernel and user space.

Trojan, distributed over torrent, blocks torrent sites

A trojan named Troj/Qhost-AC, has been spotted on torrent sites labeled as a keygen for popular software. But in a strange surprise, the trojan would modify the users host file, rather than generating a key, changing popular torrent web sites like, The Pirate Bay, Suprbay (The Pirate Bay forum) and Mininova, the two most popular torrent sites on the internet to 127.0.0.1, making it impossible to visit these sites. The Trojan caused pop-ups on users screens and played a sound file saying "downloading is wrong". The Trojan didn't install any other spyware or malware onto the victims PC, other than blocking the three web sites, something that many users thought was strange.

Mobile WiMax spec becomes a standard

IEEE approves 802.16e

The IEEE this week formally ratified the mobile version of the WiMax wireless broadband system as a standard.

Known as 802.16e, the mobile standard now officially extends the already ratified 802.16-2004 - aka 802.11d - specification, which details connections between fixed locations. The 802.16e standard allows a base-station to communicate with a moving device.

The two versions of WiMax are not compatible, but both are expected to be ultimately implemented in dual-mode base-stations, allowing a single antenna to talk to transceivers mounted on the side of buildings and to devices carried by cars, trains and pedestrians.

By the end of 2005, 802.16-2004 and 802.16e should have been merged into a single IEEE document, 802.16e-2005...

Office 2010 Has Leaked!

The Technical Preview of Office 2010 has officially leaked! WZor.net uploaded a torrent a few hours ago for both the x86 and x64 versions of the new Office suite.

Without further ado, I present:

Microsoft Office 2010 (x86)

AND

Microsoft Office 2010 (x64)

The x64 torrent doesn't seem to be very active at the moment, but over time, as it gains more seeders, hopefully it will pick up. We were achieving speeds of up to 1000kbps during our download of the x86 version, so the torrent is going strong... That is, until the rest of the world picks up on it... Download quickly!

While you eagerly await the end of your download, check out a screenshot gallery from WZor as well (the version pictured in the screenshots is the x64 version).

Australia to test blocking all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic

Australia has been known to have high levels of censorship. It should come as no surprise to those in the land down under that the government is planning to filter P2P and Bit Torrent traffic in live pilot tests. Senator Conroy went on the record saying "technology that filters peer-to-peer and Bit Torrent traffic does exist and it is anticipated that the effectiveness of this will be tested in the live pilot trial". It is a drastic step to filter out all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic as it assumes that those channels are only used for piracy. One example of legitimate use is the popular online game World of Warcraft.

"txtor" tool circumvents basic torrent blockers

To the frustration of many students and other avid torrent downloaders, some universities and ISPs have been known to block the download of .torrent files in an effort to curb illegal file sharing. This quick and dirty method of filtering Internet content is usually done through the use of a proxy server that will look for a torrent mime-type in the file or, even simpler, the file extension itself. Although this method seems almost too simple to take seriously, enough admins have found it effective enough to justify its use.

That's why a group of developers launched txtor today, a site that makes it possible to download .torrent files as if they were text files. As the site explains, from the user perspective, the service functions very simply. Plug in the URL of a torrent file, and it's translated to a text file for you to download. For a moderately more technical explanation, the site merely takes the file and changes the mimetype and extension, then spits it back out at you as a text file in order to bypass proxy-level torrent file blocks. Then, all you need to do is change the file extension back from .txt to .torrent and open it up in your favorite torrent client. Based on our testing of txtor, we can say that the tool works exactly as advertised.

Beware the 802.11n 'power' play

Next-generation 802.11n systems promise to considerably improve WLAN performance. But the processing required for the boost sucks up more power than the older 802.11a/b/g networks. Still, many enterprise-class Wi-Fi vendors claim to deliver full 802.11n capabilities without enterprise customers having to touch their power infrastructures. So what gives?

Power is just one issue for which youll have to don your detectives hat when exploring the comparative performance, range, and upgrade issues associated with a move to 802.11n. But Siemens announcement last week that it had solved the power problem for 802.11n with its HiPath Wireless 802.11n product set, due to ship in March, set me on an investigative path to find out what the various suppliers are offering and what their recommended approaches to powering 802.11n networks are.

Controversy over new Pirate Bay Facebook feature

The Pirate Bay has added a small, but significant feature to their website which will almost certainly prove to be controversial. The new feature is a link provided on each torrent page which allows users to post the link to the particular torrent onto their Facebook profile. Friends can then begin to download the particular torrent straight from their Facebook page, assuming a torrent client is installed. Many websites allow their users to do the very same thing – even Neowin allows its users to submit news articles to Facebook; however the controversy lies in just what users will be sharing, with the use of this.

Broadcom: 802.11n unlikely to replace 802.11g

Broadcom has revised its outlook for 802.11n chips, envisioning that 802.11n is unlikely to replace 802.11g as the mainstream technology standard for the WLAN market, according to Michael Hurlston, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's WLAN business unit. The price difference between 802.11n and 802.11g solutions was a fundamental factor in Broadcom's shift in outlook for 802.11n chips, Hurlston added. Since the manufacture of 802.11g chips is mature and the prices for 802.11g devices are very competitive, 802.11g will continue to be the mainstream for the industry, Hurlston stated.

Steal This Film 2 hits File Sharing Networks

Steal This Film 1, which was downloaded nearly 3 million times, has now been succeeded officially (as the sequel premiered and was ironically leaked last month) by none other than Steal This Film 2. By producing this video, the League of Noble Peers, which features many prominent individuals from the BitTorrent community, has the goal of “ bringing new people into the leagues of those now prepared to think 'after intellectual property', think creatively about the future of distribution, production and creativity .” For those still confused, Steal This Film is a series documenting the movement against intellectual property. The films discuss piracy culture as well as raids against file sharing websites. In the spirit of piracy, the movie is completely free for download.
