29.05.2007The future of wireless networking in Windows 7
Long Zheng: Its rare for a week to go by
without a few interesting Microsoft job advertisements. One of which
posted last week provides a pretty good idea at how the next version of Windows will improve the wireless
networking experience.
Vista was about making Wi-Fi connections as seamless, manageable and secure as wired networks.
The next Windows version is really about taking Wireless networking to the next level by enabling new complete end to end scenarios and
experiences that are going to change how windows PCs interact with each other and other devices and nodes over a wireless network.
As a part of the Windows Networking Ecosystem Technologies team, you will be working on scenarios around virtualizing Wireless to allow
connections to multiple networks simultaneously. You will be working on enabling new windows to windows connectivity paths within a wireless network
to improve wireless throughput and latency. You will be working on wireless-only office and mesh networking scenarios that will make setup and
management of wireless networks quick and inexpensive with the goal to reduce TCO for centrally controlled and secured deployments by improving
manageability, performance and reliability.
As a part of this work, you will be working closely on existing and in-works wireless
standards such as IEEE 802.11s, 802.11k, 802.11r, 802.11w. This position will provide you the unique opportunity of working on core wireless
areas as well as collaborating with several other key Windows technologies to deliver a complete functional end to end scenario. The work will be in
both the Windows kernel and user space.

04.11.2007Mobile WiMax spec becomes a
standard
IEEE approves
802.16e
The IEEE this week formally
ratified the mobile version of
the WiMax wireless broadband
system as a
standard.
Known as 802.16e, the mobile
standard now officially
extends the already ratified
802.16-2004 - aka 802.11d -
specification, which details
connections between fixed
locations. The 802.16e
standard allows a base-station
to communicate with a moving
device.
The two
versions of WiMax are not
compatible, but both are
expected to be ultimately
implemented in dual-mode
base-stations, allowing a
single antenna to talk to
transceivers mounted on the
side of buildings and to
devices carried by cars,
trains and
pedestrians.
By the
end of 2005, 802.16-2004 and
802.16e should have been
merged into a single IEEE
document, 802.16e-2005...

Beware the 802.11n 'power' play
Next-generation 802.11n systems promise to considerably improve WLAN performance. But the processing required for the boost sucks up more power than
the older 802.11a/b/g networks. Still, many enterprise-class Wi-Fi vendors claim to deliver full 802.11n capabilities without enterprise customers
having to touch their power infrastructures. So what gives?
Power is just one issue for which youll have to don your detectives
hat when exploring the comparative performance, range, and upgrade issues associated with a move to 802.11n. But Siemens announcement last week that
it had śsolved the power problem for 802.11nť with its HiPath Wireless 802.11n product set, due to ship in March, set me on an investigative path to
find out what the various suppliers are offering and what their recommended approaches to powering 802.11n networks are.

Next gen iPhone / Touch to have 802.11n and FM radio
As reported by AppleInsider, the next generation of iPhone and iPod Touch, rumored to be released in June or July, roughly the same date as the iPhone

wireless 802.11n, previously only supports 5Ghz 802.11a and 2.4 802.11b/g networks. The upgrade will allow low-power 802.11n networks to be utilized
for speed, where all MacBook's currently support 802.11n. The next generation iPhone and iPod Touch are also rumored to support FM radio signals,
to both receive and transmit capabilities.

Broadcom: 802.11n unlikely to replace 802.11g
Broadcom has revised its outlook for 802.11n chips, envisioning that 802.11n is unlikely to replace 802.11g as the mainstream technology standard for
the WLAN market, according to Michael Hurlston, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's WLAN business unit. The price difference between
802.11n and 802.11g solutions was a fundamental factor in Broadcom's shift in outlook for 802.11n chips, Hurlston added. Since the manufacture of
802.11g chips is mature and the prices for 802.11g devices are very competitive, 802.11g will continue to be the mainstream for the industry, Hurlston
stated.

How to deploy XP SP3 in an existing wired 802.1x environment
Clay Seymour: Prior to SP3, the 802.1x service for XP is the Wireless Zero Configuration Service. This service handles the 802.1x needs for both
wired and wireless connections. This has been problematic since not everyone uses wired 802.1x. Also, because the wired 802.1x engine listens
passively for EAP Identity traffic, we are not fully compliant with the IEEE spec, which state the client should initiate authentication by sending an
EAPOL-Start frame.
With SP3, we have separated the wireless service from the wired service and created a new Dot3Svc (Wired
AutoConfig). This service is set as a manual start as opposed to being automatic. The default behavior of the Dot3Svc is now compliant with the IEEE
specification.

New certification process to ignite sales of 802.11n Draft 2
The Wi-Fi Alliance's recent
announcement that it will
begin certifying products
using the 802.11n Draft 2.0
specification starting in June
is expected to help enhance
customer confidence over pre-N
products and therefore boost
sales of 802.11n devices and
help the industry migrate to
802.11n from 802.11g.
This statement is reasonable
since the alliance has
certified products for all of
the preceding 802.11
standards, including 802.11a,
802.11b and 802.11g, and
customers have trusted the
alliance's certification
marks and have purchased Wi-Fi
products accordingly. When the
802.11n Draft 1.0 standard was
unveiled in March 2006,
related chipmakers and
network-equipment makers,
especially those based in
Taiwan, had hoped that the new
standard would significantly
help drive sales for the
industry.
