17.8.2008Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta Build Clarification
Just a quick note to anyone that plans on testing the new Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta. The build Microsoft posted
here is in
fact a much newer build than either the original Server 2008 RC1 or Vista SP1 RC1. While the original RC1 was Build 6001.17051 for Server 2008 and
6001.17052 for Vista SP1, the new Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V beta is substantially newer at 6001.17119 and may even contain further
stability/performance improvements to the actual OS so it may be worth checking it out even if you don't intend to test the Hyper-V bits. Also note
that due to Hyper-V being a 64-Bit OS only option, there is no 32-Bit build available of the newer Server 2008 RC1.

Ballmer said, "Share versus Apple, you know, we think we may have ticked up a little tick, but when you get right down to it, it's a rounding
error.

15.06.2008Windows Vista SP1 Build 6001.16633 Info
Some very quick info that we came across regarding the latest release of Vista SP1 to testers. As Mary Jo Foley
previously reported, Microsoft have indeed made the latest build of Vista SP1
(6001.16633) available as a standalone update file to testers.
Build: 6.0.6001.16633 (longhorn.070803-1655)
Filename:
windows6.0-kb936330-x86.exe
Size: 684MB
Surprisingly, the update file is in the .exe format. Many (including myself)
were expecting Microsoft to deliver the update for Vista SP1 in the the new Vista/Server 2008-only .msu format used for current Hotfixes.

When it comes to security, human threats score much higher than those
posed by technology. So says a new survey by consulting firm Deloitte of more than 100 technology, media and telecommunications companies
worldwide.
Seventy-five per cent of companies listed human error as the leading cause of security failures such as breakdowns and systems
outages. Forty-eight per cent also cited operations and technology lapses as key causes of security failures. Problems resulting from third parties
such as contractors and business partners, meanwhile, received 28 per cent of the votes as a root cause of security failures.

06.02.2008Programming error gives CT scan patients radiation overdose
In a rather off-the-track technology related report, a hospital named Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has come into a bit of trouble due to problems with
its CT scanner; a programming error has caused the machine to give patients eight times the maximum amount of radiation that's nominal. According
to the LA Times, the hospital recently began utilizing a new protocol in order to create a specialized type of scan used to diagnose strokes, which
unfortunately went a bit wrong. In order to use said protocol, the machine had to be reset, thus overriding the pre-programmed instructions that were
included with the scanner when it was installed.

05.04.2007MS admits Halo 3 'disc unreadable' errors
Microsoft has refused to reveal the cause behind a fresh wave of disc problems affecting Halo 3. The company told Register Hardware that it's aware
of a problem which stops the game from loading correctly, but refused to give any further explanation.
Exact descriptions of the
disc error differ between gamers, but all of the them who've encountered the issue report being presented with a message that says the disc is
unreadable and can't be loaded.
For example, one reader told us that when trying to start a campaign or solo game, an error
message appears on the screen saying the game can't be started. It then advises him to press button A on the control pad. However, a second error
message states more specifically that game content can't be loaded and a progress bar hops continuously between one and 29 per cent.

06.04.2009x64 Kernel patch causes random restarts, fix on the way
Microsoft has disclosed that
update 932596, a patch released for the Kernel Patch Protection
feature that is included with x64 versions of Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008, seems to be causing random restarts on
certain machines. A Stop error is then generated (error code 0x0000001E, 0x000000D1, or another Stop error code). x86 versions of Windows are not
affected since they do not include the Kernel Patch Protection feature (also known as PatchGuard), a technology that is meant to prevent third-party
interventions into the core of the operating system.

where they were wondering whether Microsoft would release an RC2 build of Server 2008 prior to RTM. Well, thanks to the new Windows Server 2008 RC1

here,
Microsoft may have inadvertently already answered that exact question. Since the Server 2008 build included with the Hyper-V Beta is a newer compile
(6001.17119) than the originally released Server 2008 RC1 (6001.17051), Microsoft have included an updated EULA which directly mentions RC2:
