Neowin Review: Fence your desktop with Stardock Fences

Windows Desktop - A place where every installed application likes to place a shortcut and also a place to hold all your shortcuts and favorites. Things can become very messy when you have lots of desktop icons, like mine below: Well, there's not that many on my desktop, but I still place them in categories. Microsoft Office Apps all reside together and Windows Live Apps reside together. Each time I bring a new shortcut to my desktop, Windows places them in a separate order which it thinks to be right and then I move that shortcut icon to its appropriate group.

Google Desktop Search goes Linux

Google has launched a beta version of Google Desktop Search for Linux in a sign of encouragement by the search giant for Linux on the desktop.

Google Desktop allows people to search the Web while also searching the full text of all the information on their computer, including Gmail and their Web search history. Because the index is stored locally on the computer, users can access Gmail and Web history while offline.

Google Desktop for Linux was written natively and uses Google's own desktop search algorithms, not existing Linux search applications such as Beagle, a company representative said. Only computers with x86 processors can use the software. It supports the Debian 4.0, Fedora Core 6, Ubuntu 6.10, Novell Suse 10.1 and Red Flag 5 versions of Linux, and uses either the KDE and GNOME graphical user interfaces. ..

Free Vista Sunday, 3D desktop with Real Desktop Light

Jonathan Schlaffer: Vista has been an all-around disappointment and even those with SP1 have reason to complain. Those with problems are probably more outspoken than those that dont but the issues keep piling up and Microsoft does little about them. This program may brighten up your Vista experience a tiny bit.

Real Desktop comes it two forms, Real Desktop Standard and Real Desktop Light; major differences set the two apart. With Real Desktop Standard you get all the features and with Light, not so much.

The light version gives you a basic, fully 3D desktop environment. You can stack icons, drag them anywhere on the desk, flip them around, upside down and several other neat things. What you cant do is change the wallpaper or orientation of the camera. The other thing thats annoying is the light version lacks the ability to reset the icon positions; as you can see below, its very easy to mess them up.

Survey Says Linux Desktop Is Ever More Popular

The first thing we can say about the Linux desktop in 2007 is that there are more users than ever. The Linux Foundation 2006 survey had fewer than 10,000 people signing in. This year more than 20,000 Linux desktop users reported in.

Who are these users? Most of them, 69.4 percent, work in small companies with one to 100 workers. To no surprise, many of them, 43.3 percent, are IT professionals or software developers, and most of them, 64.1 percent, have already deployed desktop Linux in the office.

When desktop Linux is deployed in a business, it's being deployed in a big way. In those businesses and organizations with at least one Linux desktop, 40.6 percent have Linux on more than half of their PCs. Windows is still the No. 1 desktop system, with 57.5 percent of Linux PC using offices still running it on half or more of their desktops.

Windows Search 4.0 vs. Google Desktop 5.5

Brad Linder: Microsoft released an updated version of Windows Search, its free desktop search client the other day. And while there are dozens of excellent desktop search clients, including a few good free ones, it seems inevitable that people are going to compare Windows Search to Google Desktop. Because you know, any time either company releases something kind of cool someones assumes that it's just a ripoff of a product offered by the other. Or Apple.

Anyway, we've been using Windows Search for the past few days and we thought we'd let you know how it stacks up against Google Desktop. Read on for the results.

Desktop PC not dead, just changing

The traditional desktop PC is not yet doomed, but is going through a transformation, according to HP.

While laptops are becoming increasingly attractive to consumers and small businesses, the majority of sales to larger businesses are still of desktop PCs.

Speaking at the launch of a series of new products from HP in New York, Alberto Bozzo, the company's European personal systems group general manager of commercial products, said: "The reality is the desktop is not dead -- it is transforming into something else."

Bozzo said innovation would come in virtualised client technologies such as thin clients, blade servers and blade PCs. "This is where the desktop is going. is small at the moment but it is an emerging technology -- small from a volume point of view, but promising," he said...

2009: Linux and the desktop

Choosing a desktop platform usually involves the choice between Windows or Macintosh. There are a few factors which people consider when they are choosing a desktop platform. In no particular order, people want application compatibility, stability, security, performance, and ease of use. When we look at desktop market share, we can see the following (as of statistics reported in October of 2008): Windows boasts the lead with 91% market share, down 5% from March of 2003. Mac holds 6% market share, an increase of 4% from March, 2003. Finally, Linux has doubled its market share since 2003 with a current 4%.

Linux desktop lacks innovation

Microsoft is complaining that "the Linux desktop including OpenOffice" infringes some 235 Microsoft patents. An objective comparison between the whole Linux desktop and Microsoft's Windows desktop shows that it has a good point; there are many resemblances, from trivial to profound. However, there are plentiful other non-Windows-like models of desktop to follow instead. At least two are already there: implemented, working and ready to use, complete with accessories. Two complete Free, open source desktops, radically different from anything Microsoft has patented. They're just not being used by any distributions.
