Windows 7 build 7127 leaked

Redmond is still running low on Joe the plumbers as another Windows 7 leak surfaces today. This time around it's the second RTM branch build to leak, 7127. Approximately a month after 7106 leaked. The build string is 7127.0.090507-1820 meaning it was compiled just over a week ago so it's still fresh off the blocks. Microsoft is progressing steadily with the RTM branch and company insiders have indicated the software giant is well on target to finalise the RTM build over the summer. Our guess? Late June or early July. Microsoft is expected to announce general availability of Windows 7 for before the Christmas period, cashing in on holiday PC purchasers.

Google goes for a new look on Korean site

Google is trying out a new look on its South Korean http://www.google.co.kr/ig?sp= korea&hl=ko>Web site that goes further from the company's famously clean design than anything tried before.

Google has been quietly tinkering with the design of its Web site for some time. Most recently, the company added a toolbar with text links at the top of its flagship site, just above the company's logo and search bar. The new site design introduced in South Korea replaces the toolbar with an array of logos -- including a row of animated icons that expand when the mouse rolls over them -- that add a dose of color, and clutter, to the site.

Eric Schmidt, the chairman and CEO of Google, announced the new look during a keynote speech Wednesday at the Seoul Digital Forum, saying Korean users were ready for the new design, which he described as more sophisticated. Schmidt didn't say whether the company planned to use the same design on other Google sites. ..

Windows 7 build 7137 leaked

Barely two weeks after build 7127 leaked we have another fresh leak of Windows 7, build 7137. This time around the build tag is 7137.0.090521-1745 meaning this build is only a week old. As ever the build is available at the usual places but it might be worth waiting until RTM as a lot of Windows 7 torrents have been hit by malware and viruses recently. Microsoft is still on target to finalise Windows 7 over the summer with a general availability this fall. Un-official wallpaper not included by default, thanks to djlegion for the screenshots.

Flickr adds Twitter integration

Flickr has launched Twitter integration. The Flickr Blog reports that Twitter functionality has been added to the photo management tool. You can upload photos to both Flickr and Twitter, or use the functionality to tweet about an already existing photograph. The system will automatically shorten the url using a "flic.kr" URL. Getting started is simple enough and instructions can be found here. The Flickr Blog has also provided us with a sample image of a tweeted photo: This news must come as disconcerting to TwitPic, a website which allows the sharing of photos on Twitter.

Samsung releases 70-inch LCD panel

Samsung Electronics grabbed more than 50 percent share in the 40-inch or larger LCD TV panel in the global market in the first quarter, according to data released yesterday. On the same day, the company launched a 70-inch high definition LCD TV, PAVV LED 70, in the domestic market, which analysts say will consolidate its leading status in the luxury TV market.

According to the data by market research group DisplaySearch, Samsung recorded 1.6 million shipments of 40-inch or larger LCD panels in the first quarter, or 50.2 percent of the total 3.2 million shipments.

Sony announces 80GB PS3...for Korea

Well we have to admit, we sure didn't see this one coming. There have been rumors of a higher capacity PlayStation 3 for several months now, but no one figured that the first 80GB model would drop not in Japan or the US, but South Korea.

And yet that's exactly what's scheduled to go down http://www.playstation.co.kr/p s_community/com_news_view.sce? sid=8942>June 16th, when the previously-denied, Euro-spec'ed PS3 (but no 20GB or 60GB models, it seems) will hit the land of Samsung and LG for a pre-tax 518,000 won -- or just $556.

While we don't want to get your hopes up, we can't help but think that this move bodes well for US consumers too; after all, the 80 GB version is already through the FCC, meaning that price drops and unimaginable storage space could be right around the corner.

Hynix Creates Fastest 1-Gigabyte Mobile DRAM

Hynix Semiconductor Inc. announced Sunday that it has developed the world's fastest and smallest 1-gigabyte mobile DRAM and plans to start mass production in early 2008.

The new chip, mainly used in mobile phones, operates at the maximum speed of 200 MHz and is capable of processing 1.6 gigabytes of data per second, the world's second-largest computer memory chip maker said.

"Of the 1-gigabyte DRAMs developed so far, it is the smallest and fastest," Hynix said in a statement. "It can be applied to ultra-small electronic devices and memory products."

The new DRAM also has a "one-chip solution" that allows its data processing speed and method to be adapted to a device using the chip, the company said.

Hynix said demand for the new chip is surging as handheld devices are getting smaller and faster and their capacity is becoming larger.

Technology detects fake works of art

US researchers are harnessing digital technology to help differentiate original works of art from forgeries. Penn State scientists James Z Wang, associate professor of information sciences and technology, and Jia Li, associate professor of statistics, have published their work in the July issue of IEEE Signal Processing.

The team's findings are based on 101 high-resolution greyscale scans of paintings by Vincent van Gogh provided by the Van Gogh and Kröller-Müller museums in the Netherlands.

Sun's ODF plugin for MS Office now available

The Sun ODF Plug-in is an extension to Microsoft Office that allows it to read and write ISO standard ODF files. It supports Office 2000, XP, and 2003, and works on Windows XP and Vista. It adds to MS Office the ability to read and write ODF text, spreadsheet, and presentation files (.odt, .ods, and .odp) - the ISO standard editions of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

Furthermore, ODF text files (.odt) can be made the default format for MS-Word thanks to this plug-in (and double-clicking on an ODF text file on the desktop would automatically open it in MS-Word).

Addressing the accessibility concerns of existing MS-Office users was one of the key reasons behind Sun's development of the ODF plug-in, and I have been one of several folks involved in testing the accessibility of this plug-in (along with several beta testers whose employees with disabilities were likewise doing accessibility testing).

CRT Monitors Dying Off As LG, Samsung Mull Exit

The CRT monitor continues to die off, according to market figures released last week by DisplaySearch. In a related report, both LG and Samsung are considering pulling out of CRT displays.

The analyst firm found that of the 45.4 million monitors sold during the second quarter, just 4.6 million or 10.2 percent were CRTs. The firm found that CRT sales have dropped 11 percent in the second quarter alone, and by 46 percent compared to the prior year. LCD monitors, meanwhile, represent 88.2 percent of overall sales, and have increased 34 percent versus a year ago. The remainder went to all-in-one PCs.

With display manufacturers becoming more and more invested into LCDs, manufacturer commitment for CRTs seems to be on the wane. The Korea Times reported Monday that both LG and Samsung appear to be phasing out their CRT television lines, shifting their emphasis to LCDs. Although CRT TVs and monitors are not interchangeable, they do use common components.

Samsung Develops World's Fastest and Largest 2.5" MLC-based 256GB SSD

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has developed the worlds fastest, 2.5-inch, 256 Gigabyte (GB ) multi-level cell (MLC) based solid state drive (SSD) using a SATA II interface at the fifth annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum held at the Westin Taipei Hotel. Samsungs new 256GB SSD is also the thinnest drive with the largest capacity to be offered with a SATA II interface.

With a sequential read speed of 200 megabytes per second (MB/s) and sequential write speed of 160MB/s, Samsungs MLC-based 2.5-inch 256GB SSD is about 2.4 times faster than a typical HDD.

Furthermore, the new 256 GB SSD is only 9.5millimeters (mm) thick, and measures 100.3x69.85 mm.

Once introduced, the Samsungs 256GB SSD will mark the largest capacity SSD from the global market leader in SSD sales, effectively eliminating density as a barrier to SSD adoption in the consumer space.

Mobile WiMAX approved, Korea says

WiBro, a variant of the WiMAX wireless internet standard, has been approved as a global standard by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), according to Korean government sources quoted in South Korea media. The WiBro technology, which is designed to provide wireless broadband internet connections to mobile users, was developed by the Korean government and local telecommunications companies such as Samsung and PosData.

The ITU formally accepted technologies underlying WiBro as international standards for third generation mobile telecommunications at a meeting in Geneva late last week, the reports said. WiBro is Korea's name for a mobile version of the WiMAX wireless internet technology. ITU announcements do not appear to mention WiBro by name, but instead refer to acceptance of technology related to the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) transmission protocol, which underlies both WiBro and WiMAX.

"It is a milestone in the history of Korea's telecommunications technology and will help us maintain the front runner position in the global race for next-generation mobile technologies," Song Yoo-jong, a Korean government official told the Korea Herald.

Music 2.0: Engineers unveil MT9 format

Korean computer engineers are introducing a new digital music format that has a six-channel audio equalizer and separate controls on the sound volume for each musical instrument, such as guitar, drum, base and voice. The new format, which has a file extension format of MT9 and a commercial title of "Music 2.0", is poised to replace the popular MP3 file format as the de-facto standard of the digital music source, its inventors say.

The MT9 technology was selected as a candidate item for the new digital music standard at the last regular meeting of Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG), the international body of the digital music and video industry.

Ham says that the music industry should change its attitude to the market as music is becoming a digital service, rather than a physical product. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are both interested in equipping their mobile phones with an MT9 player and their first commercial products are likely to debut early next year, he said.

Unlike other digital formats exclusively used by big companies, Audizen (the venture company behind the development) allows users to copy the MT9 files, making it a more attractive format. "It's like having a CD or cassette tape. Once you buy it, you can lend it to your friends. We don't want to be too fussy about DRM (digital right management),'' said Ham Seung-chul, chief of Audizen.
