24.7.2009Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100
Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build. 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and
has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that
Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release. Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet
customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th. According to reports, 7115.0.winmain.090421-1650 is the
latest build internally at the time of writing.

Windows 7 build 7077 leaks
According to several reports from Neowin members, Windows 7 build 7077 has leaked to various torrent sites. Named as an RC escrow build it's
likely that 7077.0.090404-1255 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. Microsoft confirmed the 7100 path yesterday on
its Engineering Windows 7 blog by advising users to modify the MinClient build number from 7100 to 7000 in order to enable beta to RC upgrades. It is
now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM.

Windows 7 RC gets its first bug, and it's a doozy
The first documented bug in the Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100) is a doozy.

Reports: Windows 7 has reached build 7079
Wzor is once again reporting that the Windows 7 winmain_win7rc branch has reached 7079. Yesterday build 7077 leaked via BitTorrent and we speculated
this could be the build that would be "renamed" to 7100 for the RC. It appears that isn't the case and Microsoft has built 7078.0.090406-1758
and 7079.0.090407-1902 over the last few days. We still expect Microsoft to name the RC build shortly and all bets are on 7100. Last month Microsoft
hinted at a May public release for the RC.

Windows 7 Release Candidate goes public... Oops
Tired of waiting for Microsoft to release the first (and likely only) release candidate of Windows 7? No worries, you can go and snatch it up now...
via torrents. Earlier today, build 7100 of Windows 7, the official Release Candidate build, leaked to the public.
While no new visual
elements stand out from previous builds, UI changes should no longer be expected this late in the game. Any changes from this point on will be, for
the most part, behind the scenes. One notable change however is Microsoft's decision to revert back to the previous active tile design for the
taskbar, as found in build 7068, as it no longer features the white hazy glow behind the icon.
The official release date of Windows 7 RC
is expected to be May 5th for the public, and slightly earlier for TechNet and MSDN subscribers.
Have you found anything new in this
build? Share it with us in our community forums...
Update: Microsoft now says the RC will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on
April 30th.

Happy birthday, x86! An industry standard turns 30
Thirty years ago, on June 8, 1978, Intel Corp. introduced its first 16-bit microprocessor, the 8086, with a splashy ad heralding "the dawn of a new
era." Overblown? Sure, but also prophetic. While the 8086 was slow to take off, its underlying architecture -- later referred to as x86 -- would
become one of technology's most impressive success stories.
"X86" refers to the set of machine language instructions that
certain microprocessors from Intel and a few other companies execute. It essentially defines the vocabulary and usage rules for the chip. X86
processors -- from the 8086 through the 80186, 80286, 80386, 80486 and various Pentium models, right down to today's multicore chips and processors
for mobile applications -- have over time incorporated a growing x86 instruction set, but each has offered backward compatibility with earlier members
of the family.

Vista SP1 x86 appears on Torrent Sites
In the last few days, certain Neowin forum members have reported that an image of Vista SP1 x86 Final has leaked to torrent sites. This file is
supposedly a slipstreamed image of the final Service Pack 1 for Vista x86. It is allegedly available in various languages, including English. Since
many believe that this is indeed the download that Microsoft will provide in the upcoming weeks, I would like to emphasize that this is not the case.
This release is not official, nor is it genuine. I repeat: Vista SP1 has not gone final.
Neowin members are reporting that the file in
question may be SP1 Refresh 2 slipstreamed or simply a malware-filled release. I would like to remind our members not to post links to any Vista SP1
build, unless it comes directly from Microsoft’s servers.

VIA Launches New Nano Processors For UMPCs
VIA Technologies, a leading maker of power-efficient x86 microprocessors, is releasing a new series of nano processors, based on VIA's Isaiah chip
architecture.
The five power-efficient x86 processors in the Nano family use between 5 and 25 watts, and chips have clock speeds ranging
from 1.0 to 1.8 GHz. These kinds of ultra-thin, low-voltage processors are aimed at ultraportable notebooks and ultramobile PCs. The Nano processors
"represent the next generation of x86 technology," said Wenchi Chen, President and CEO, VIA Technologies in a statement. The VIA Nano processors are
the first 64-bit, superscalar, speculative out-of-order x86 processors produced by VIA.

IBM, HP lead server market thanks to x86 sales
IBM edged out
Hewlett-Packard in
first-quarter server revenue
as both companies relied on a
rebound in sales of x86-based
computers, according to a
market report released
Tuesday.
X86
server sales had been sluggish
in the fourth quarter as
buyers used efficient
virtualization technology and
slowed their buying cycles to
wait for the arrival of
quad-core processors,
according to the report from
Gartner. That trend ended in
the first three months of 2007
as global server revenue rose
4.5 percent over its level in
the same period last year,
reaching $12.9 billion.
The number of servers
shipped by all vendors
actually rose faster than
revenue, up 6 percent to 2.1
million units. But intense
competition in the market for
RISC and Itanium-based servers
forced prices down, Gartner
analyst Jeffrey Hewitt said in
the report. ..
