16.5.2009Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100
Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build. 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and
has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that
Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release. Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet
customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th. According to reports, 7115.0.winmain.090421-1650 is the
latest build internally at the time of writing.

Windows 7 build 7077 leaks
According to several reports from Neowin members, Windows 7 build 7077 has leaked to various torrent sites. Named as an RC escrow build it's
likely that 7077.0.090404-1255 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. Microsoft confirmed the 7100 path yesterday on
its Engineering Windows 7 blog by advising users to modify the MinClient build number from 7100 to 7000 in order to enable beta to RC upgrades. It is
now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM.

Windows 7 RC build 7100 leaks
Redmond still haven't called that plumber, the official RC build has leaked online at the usual places. We revealed yesterday that the Windows 7
RC build was 7100 and according to many Neowin members the x86 version has leaked just a short time ago. We expect the RC will be available to the
public shortly and Redmond could still hit the rumored May 5th date. There is speculation the software giant will hold off until May 15th, the last
day of Tech-Ed 2009.

Reports: Windows 7 has reached build 7079
Wzor is once again reporting that the Windows 7 winmain_win7rc branch has reached 7079. Yesterday build 7077 leaked via BitTorrent and we speculated
this could be the build that would be "renamed" to 7100 for the RC. It appears that isn't the case and Microsoft has built 7078.0.090406-1758
and 7079.0.090407-1902 over the last few days. We still expect Microsoft to name the RC build shortly and all bets are on 7100. Last month Microsoft
hinted at a May public release for the RC.

Windows 7 RC gets its first bug, and it's a doozy
The first documented bug in the Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100) is a doozy.
Yesterday, Microsoft published Knowledge Base article 970789, which provides details of a problem that affects the 32-bit (x86)
English-language version of Windows 7 build 7100. The problem, in short, is that the installer incorrectly sets access control lists (ACLs) on the
root of the system drive. The longer version is described as follows...

Windows 7 Release Candidate goes public... Oops
Tired of waiting for Microsoft to release the first (and likely only) release candidate of Windows 7? No worries, you can go and snatch it up now...
via torrents. Earlier today, build 7100 of Windows 7, the official Release Candidate build, leaked to the public.
While no new visual
elements stand out from previous builds, UI changes should no longer be expected this late in the game. Any changes from this point on will be, for
the most part, behind the scenes. One notable change however is Microsoft's decision to revert back to the previous active tile design for the
taskbar, as found in build 7068, as it no longer features the white hazy glow behind the icon.
The official release date of Windows 7 RC
is expected to be May 5th for the public, and slightly earlier for TechNet and MSDN subscribers.
Have you found anything new in this
build? Share it with us in our community forums...
Update: Microsoft now says the RC will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on
April 30th.

Nokia to axe 1,700 jobs worldwide
The world's largest mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has announced plans to cut 1,700 jobs globally. The move is part of large cost-cutting
measures as the company tries to cope with the economic downturn and falling demand for handsets. The job loses account for about 3% of Nokia's
worldwide work force of roughly 125,000 and will mainly be in their devices and markets divisions, falling across a range of departments including
marketing, development and support, and a separate unit concerned with corporate strategy. Up to 700 jobs could be lost at the company's base in
Finland, with the rest affecting employees in Europe, Asia and North America.

Microsoft Confirms HDMI Port on X360 Premium Model, Not Core
Microsoft has confirmed the
addition of HDMI ports to all
newly manufactured Xbox 360
premium consoles. "Yes, we
are offering an HDMI port for
Xbox 360 simply as another
choice in Xbox 360 owners
games and entertainment
experience," a Microsoft rep
told Shacknews in an e-mailed
statement. "Retailers are
gradually introducing
HDMI-enabled Xbox 360s into
the channel to meet
demand."
Regarding the possibility
of an HDMI output on the
$279.99 SKU, the Microsoft rep
said, "We have not announced
any plans to add HDMI to the
Xbox 360 Core System."
Microsoft would not reveal
whether any other additions
had been made to newly
available Xbox 360 models,
such as the inclusion of a
65nm process. "We are
constantly updating the
consoles more than 1700
internal components and
therefore will not comment on
details of specific components
or manufacturing processes,"
he said.

Seagate Barracuda hard drives plagued by failures
Numerous complaints are being reported from customers who own the 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive at the Seagate's online support
forum. The hard drive seems to just freeze during data transfers. Kabatek, Brown and Kellner LLP, a consumer law firm, is considering a lawsuit
against Seagate because of the high failure rates of the Barracuda 7100.11. Seagate, the world's largest Hard drive maker released the 3.5-inch
internal drive, Barracuda 7200.11 in July 2008. The hard drive offers 1.5TB of capacity on four platters and uses a SATA 3GB/sec interface, delivering
a sustained data rate of up to 120MB/sec.

NVIDIA Performance On Linux, Solaris, & Vista
AtomBOB suggests a Phoronix review comparing the performance of a Quadro
graphics card on Windows Vista Ultimate, Solaris Express Developer, and Ubuntu Linux. The graphics card used was a NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700 mid-range
workstation part. The cross-platform benchmark used was SPECViewPerf 9.0 from SPEC. Quoting
Phoronix:
"Using the Quadro FX1700 512MB and the latest display drivers, Windows Vista wasn't the decisive winner, but the
loser... Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha 5 with the 169.12 driver had overall produced the fastest results within SPECViewPerf. In only three benchmarks had Solaris
Express Developer 1/08 outpaced Ubuntu Linux, but with two of these tests the results were almost identical."
