At Home with HomeGroup in Windows 7

Like many places we’ve spent the past few weeks under quite a bit of snow, which is pretty unusual for Seattle! Most of us on the team took advantage of the snow time to install test builds of Windows 7 on our home machines as we finalize the beta for early 2009—I know I felt like I installed it on 7000 different machines.

Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100

Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build. 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release. Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th. Windows 7 build 7077 leaks

According to several reports from Neowin members, Windows 7 build 7077 has leaked to various torrent sites. Named as an RC escrow build it's likely that 7077.0.090404-1255 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. Microsoft confirmed the 7100 path yesterday on its Engineering Windows 7 blog by advising users to modify the MinClient build number from 7100 to 7000 in order to enable beta to RC upgrades. It is now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM.

Windows 7: Link your online ID and share files in Homegroup

Microsoft recently released Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant 6.5 Beta for Windows 7 which allows you to link your Windows User Accounts with your Windows Live ID. This may sound something similar to .NET Passport account in Windows XP, but it looks like it is totally different and it is way more useful than just linking your online account Microsoft cites the following as an example of how you can make use of this feature On his homegroup, Bob wants to share certain documents with his wife but not with his kids.

At Home with HomeGroup in Windows 7

Steven Sinofsky: This post is about a Windows 7 feature that covers a lot of territoryit is about networking, user interface, sharing, media, printing, storage, search, and more. HomeGroup is a way of bringing all these features together in a way that makes it possible for a new level of coolness in a home with multiple PCs running Windows 7. A lot of us are the sysadmins for our own homes and for many others (friends and family). We set up network topologies, configure machines, and set things up so they workHomeGroup is designed to make that easier so it can be done without a volunteer sysadmin. It makes for some challenges in how to describe the feature since the lack of such a feature has each of us creating our own private best practices or our own techniques for creating and maintaining a home network. HomeGroup is about making this easier (or possible for everyone else) and at the same time giving you the tools to customize and manageand no matter what, under the hood the file and printer sharing, media sharing, and networking you are already familiar with is there should you wish to stick with the familiar ways. HomeGroup is a deep feature that builds on a lot of new infrastructure/plumbing new to Windows 7, though in this post well talk about it from the experience of setting up a network.

Windows 7 RC build 7100 leaks

Redmond still haven't called that plumber, the official RC build has leaked online at the usual places. We revealed yesterday that the Windows 7 RC build was 7100 and according to many Neowin members the x86 version has leaked just a short time ago. We expect the RC will be available to the public shortly and Redmond could still hit the rumored May 5th date. There is speculation the software giant will hold off until May 15th, the last day of Tech-Ed 2009.

Reports: Windows 7 has reached build 7079

Wzor is once again reporting that the Windows 7 winmain_win7rc branch has reached 7079. Yesterday build 7077 leaked via BitTorrent and we speculated this could be the build that would be "renamed" to 7100 for the RC. It appears that isn't the case and Microsoft has built 7078.0.090406-1758 and 7079.0.090407-1902 over the last few days. We still expect Microsoft to name the RC build shortly and all bets are on 7100. Last month Microsoft hinted at a May public release for the RC.

Windows 7 RC gets its first bug, and it's a doozy

The first documented bug in the Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100) is a doozy.

Yesterday, Microsoft published Knowledge Base article 970789, which provides details of a problem that affects the 32-bit (x86) English-language version of Windows 7 build 7100. The problem, in short, is that the installer incorrectly sets access control lists (ACLs) on the root of the system drive. The longer version is described as follows...

Windows 7 'HomeGroup': rebirth of Longhorn 'Castle'?

Long Zheng: Half a decade after its initial conception, Windows Codename Longhorn still proves to be a great source of ideas. One of which known as śCastleť, appears to have been revived to be a feature of Windows 7 as śHomeGroupť.

We know what Workgroups are - Microsofts implementation of a peer-to-peer computer network for Windows to share files, printers and other resources. So what are HomeGroups?

That mystery didnt last very long as someone was kind enough to point me to some well-aged reading material which described exactly what Castle was, and the same person claims what HomeGroups are about to become.

Will Windows 7 track your every move?

One good place to look for what might be coming in Windows 7 is an early planned feature list of Vista (then called Longhorn) back in 2003. If one intriguing feature, called Location Awareness, makes its way into Windows 7, it could track your every move...and that could be a good thing.

Microsoft described Location Awareness, along with a host of other planned features, in a document called the Windows "Longhorn" Pre-Release Privacy Statement that detailed to beta testers Longhorn's expected data collection and use. (Thanks to istartedsomething for uncovering this document and its relation to another potential Windows 7 feature, HomeGroup.) Many of these features never made it into Vista --- remember WinFS anyone?

Windows 7 Release Candidate goes public... Oops

Tired of waiting for Microsoft to release the first (and likely only) release candidate of Windows 7? No worries, you can go and snatch it up now... via torrents. Earlier today, build 7100 of Windows 7, the official Release Candidate build, leaked to the public.

While no new visual elements stand out from previous builds, UI changes should no longer be expected this late in the game. Any changes from this point on will be, for the most part, behind the scenes. One notable change however is Microsoft's decision to revert back to the previous active tile design for the taskbar, as found in build 7068, as it no longer features the white hazy glow behind the icon.

The official release date of Windows 7 RC is expected to be May 5th for the public, and slightly earlier for TechNet and MSDN subscribers.

Have you found anything new in this build? Share it with us in our community forums...

Update: Microsoft now says the RC will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on April 30th.

Windows 7 RC/RTM Builds “ Clearing the Confusion
