Today, Microsoft released its first wave of invitations for the Windows 7 beta test. The invitations were only sent to a small, select group of 'technical beta' testers. In the email sent to invited testers, Microsoft states that the beta is not available for download right away. A reliable Russian website (demo:demo) has claimed that the beta Microsoft will upload is build 7000.0.081212-1400, built December 12th. They also claim the build will be made available to testers within the next 48 hours. In the email, Microsoft also mentioned their website where it has placed a wealth of information about Windows 7 and mentions the beta. This will likely be updated in the future.

Windows 7: Not only faster than Vista, XP too

Instead of using benchmarking programs, Adrian Kingsley-Hughes from ZDNet put together 23 real-world scenarios to see which operating system would be the quickest to complete all of the tasks.

He tested the 32-bit versions of Windows 7 build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows XP SP3. Two separate test machines were used:

An AMD Phenom 9700 2.4GHz system fitted with an ATI Radeon 3850 and 4GB of RAM
An Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2GHz fitted with an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and 1GB of RAM
Neither of these computers is top of the line, but Windows 7 managed to outperform both Vista and XP on both. Kingsley gave a 1 to the operating system that finished each test first, a 2 for second place, and a 3 for third. Windows 7 scored 25 points on both systems, placing first in 21 tests, and second in two other ones. On the AMD system, XP scored 61 points and Vista scored 52, while on the Intel system, XP scored 56 points and Vista scored 57.

Today is the day in which the first beta of Windows 7 becomes publicly available. Product keys will be available from 12pm PST onwards (8pm GMT).

The direct download links are already available - people are reporting that the links have to be copy and pasted into Internet Explorer, as simply clicking them does not work.

Doug Holland: Scott Wylie, Microsoft's New Zealand Director of Development and Platform Strategy, wrote today on his blog about his experience installing a pre-beta build of Windows 7 on his home laptop.



It is interesting to note that the pre-beta build of Windows 7 installed on his home laptop seems to be build 7004, which if the term "pre-beta" is accurate would indicate that Windows 7 beta one will be some build number higher than 7004. On the blogosphere the general consensus has been that beta one would be build 7000.0.081212-1400 which the following screen shot from Scott's laptop could indicate is inaccurate.

Trojan, distributed over torrent, blocks torrent sites

A trojan named Troj/Qhost-AC, has been spotted on torrent sites labeled as a keygen for popular software. But in a strange surprise, the trojan would modify the users host file, rather than generating a key, changing popular torrent web sites like, The Pirate Bay, Suprbay (The Pirate Bay forum) and Mininova, the two most popular torrent sites on the internet to 127.0.0.1, making it impossible to visit these sites. The Trojan caused pop-ups on users screens and played a sound file saying "downloading is wrong". The Trojan didn't install any other spyware or malware onto the victims PC, other than blocking the three web sites, something that many users thought was strange.

Office 2010 Has Leaked!

The Technical Preview of Office 2010 has officially leaked! WZor.net uploaded a torrent a few hours ago for both the x86 and x64 versions of the new Office suite.

The x64 torrent doesn't seem to be very active at the moment, but over time, as it gains more seeders, hopefully it will pick up. Senator Conroy went on the record saying "technology that filters peer-to-peer and Bit Torrent traffic does exist and it is anticipated that the effectiveness of this will be tested in the live pilot trial". It is a drastic step to filter out all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic as it assumes that those channels are only used for piracy. One example of legitimate use is the popular online game World of Warcraft.

"txtor" tool circumvents basic torrent blockers

To the frustration of many students and other avid torrent downloaders, some universities and ISPs have been known to block the download of .torrent files in an effort to curb illegal file sharing. This quick and dirty method of filtering Internet content is usually done through the use of a proxy server that will look for a torrent mime-type in the file or, even simpler, the file extension itself. Although this method seems almost too simple to take seriously, enough admins have found it effective enough to justify its use.



That's why a group of developers launched txtor today, a site that makes it possible to download .torrent files as if they were text files. As the site explains, from the user perspective, the service functions very simply. Plug in the URL of a torrent file, and it's translated to a text file for you to download. For a moderately more technical explanation, the site merely takes the file and changes the mimetype and extension, then spits it back out at you as a text file in order to bypass proxy-level torrent file blocks. Then, all you need to do is change the file extension back from .txt to .torrent and open it up in your favorite torrent client. Based on our testing of txtor, we can say that the tool works exactly as advertised.

Intel phases out 130 nm Itanium 2, Xeon 7000 series

Intel sent out a notification that it has started a discontinuance program for Madison 9M Itanium processors as well as Xeon 7000-series MP processors.

According to a product change notification, both processor families are phased out as “market demand has shifted to higher performance� processors. Customers interested in the Xeon 7000-series with the 90 nm Paxville and 65 nm Tulsa dual-cores or the Itanium 2 with the 130 nm Madison 9M single-core will have to put their orders in by November 16 of this year. Intel plans to ship the last boxed Xeon 7000 and Itanium 2 Madison 9M processors on February 16, 2008. Tray versions of the processors are expected to be available until May 21, 2010.

Intel plans to launch new generations of the Xeon MP and Itanium CPUs later this year...

In the market for a new wireless keyboard and mouse, looking to upgrade from my Microsoft Digital Pro Keyboard, I took a lot at Microsoft's Wireless Laser Desktop 7000. Keyboard and mouse response peripherals are important to all communication between the user and their computer, hoping that Microsoft got it right after mixed reviews on previous keyboard / mouse combos. Apple approves nearly 1400 Apps in one day

It's no secret that Apple's App store has been a huge success for Apple. It has helped to propel the iPhone to the de facto stature that it is today. Last Friday (9/18/09) Apple approved a massive 1394 apps for its store, according to Appshopper.com. The massive amount of applications that Apple is approving clearly shows how popular the platform is and that Apple clearly has a hit on its hand. A quick look at the graph (posted below) shows that Apple on average approvers roughly 400 apps a day. The immense volume also shows how Apple must stay on top of the organization of the App Store.

Windows 7 build 7077 leaks

According to several reports from Neowin members, Windows 7 build 7077 has leaked to various torrent sites. Named as an RC escrow build it's likely that 7077.0.090404-1255 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. Microsoft confirmed the 7100 path yesterday on its Engineering Windows 7 blog by advising users to modify the MinClient build number from 7100 to 7000 in order to enable beta to RC upgrades. It is now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM.
