Turn Off or Disable User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista

User Account Control (UAC) is a new security feature in Windows Vista that requires all users to log on and run in standard user privileges mode instead of as administrator with full administrative rights, thus prevent unauthorized or accidental changes that could destabilize the computers or allows virus and malware to exploit the system-level privileges provided to the local administrator to attack the network security, compromise computer safety and privacy, and damage files and settings in the network.

The Ultimate con

Long Zheng: Even if the Windows Ultimate team has fled to the International Date Line, summer is officially over. Normally I wouldnt care what season it is in the northern hemisphere but today it proves this team is incapable delivering anything and should never be trusted again.

Two months ago, after weeks of pressuring for answers, Microsofts Windows Ultimate group director Barry Goffe finally spoke out about the missing Windows Vista Ultimate Extras. As implied throughout most marketing materials including the official website and even Window Vistas own control panel, Ultimate Extras were suppose to be frequent and free premium products and services delivered to the customers who wanted it all. And the truth is, customers are getting near to nothing. Although realistically not everyones equally upset at the lack of extras, some argue it wasnt part of their choice to buy Vista Ultimate, which is fine but that doesnt help the people who did.

Vulnerability in the ActiveX Control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access

Microsoft is investigating active, targeted attacks leveraging a potential vulnerability in the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a specially crafted Web page. When a user views the Web page, the vulnerability could allow remote code execution. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user.

The ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access enables you to view an Access report snapshot without having the standard or run-time versions of Microsoft Office Access. The vulnerability only affects the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Office Access 2000, Microsoft Office Access 2002, and Microsoft Office Access 2003.

The ActiveX control is shipped with all supported versions of Microsoft Office Access except for Microsoft Office Access 2007. The ActiveX control is also shipped with the standalone Snapshot Viewer.

Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet for Windows XP

The Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet adds a new 'Color' item to the Windows control panel, providing a single place to view and edit color management settings in Windows XP. Using it, you can install and uninstall color profiles, change color profile associations for displays, printers and scanners, view detailed properties for color profiles (including a 3D rendering of the color space gamut), and rename color profiles, keeping the filenames and "internal" names consistent.
This tool also enables Windows to automatically adjust the gamut curve of the display when a color profile containing gamut table information is set as the default profile for the display. Typically, such profiles are created by custom monitor calibration tools, such as those available from ColorVision, GretagMacbeth, and X-Rite. If a color profile has this information, it is shown with an asterisk (*) in the user interface.

Using the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet, you can:

* Install and uninstall ICC color profiles
* Inspect, rename, and compare two different color profiles
* View a 3D graphics plot of color profile color gamuts
* Associate color profiles with devices such as printers, monitors, and scanners
* Apply custom color gamut adjustments to one or more displays ???on the fly???
* Set up display calibration reminders at intervals you specify

Where are the Extras?

Some people may have noticed that the Windows Ultimate Extra Language packs went missing over the weekend, many suspected a prelude to new updated Extras. Turns out it was in internal Microsoft process change that inadvertently caused the currently offered language packs to be withdrawn. They have resolved the issue put the language packs back up and the contents have not been changed...here is a little more detail.
On Friday 24 August, an internal process change inadvertently caused the current versions of the Windows Vista language packs offered as Ultimate Extras to be withdrawn earlier than normal in preparation for release of new updates to these language packs. This situation has since been resolved and the language packs are once more available to Windows Vista Ultimate customers via Windows Update. The content of the language packs themselves has not been changed.

    Finer points

Validation of these language packs is handled in the same manner as security updates.

    - If they are accessed directly from Microsoft.com Download Center, then validation is required to download.

    - If they are accessed via the Windows Update control panel, then validation is required before updates will appear.

    - If Automatic Update (AU) is enabled in Windows Update, then all of these updates will install automatically. There is no validation on AU.
Clock is still ticking on Ultimate Extras...

No Ultimate Extras for Windows 7

Windows Vista Ultimate had an interesting feature touted by Microsoft before it's release, named Extras. This was intended to be an added extra for the paying the hefty price of Ultimate, to give some bonuses to those who paid for it. Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't plan it very well, and included very few with in the release of Vista Ultimate. This led Microsoft to publicy apologizing over the matter, and to this day not a great number have been released. This led people to wonder about Windows 7 Ultimate. Would it feature Extras, or would Microsoft not worry about them this time around?

US Internet control lead topic in Rio

Debate over U.S. control of core Internet systems threatens to overtake an international meeting in Brazil next week that was meant to cover topics including spam, free speech and cheaper access.

The Internet Governance Forum is the result of a compromise world leaders reached at a U.N. summit in Tunisia two years ago. They agreed to let the United States remain in charge.

But they established an annual forum to discuss emerging issues, including whether control of how Internet addresses are assigned and thus how people use the Internet should remain with the U.S. government and an American nonprofit.

Many countries complained U.S. dominance wasn't discussed enough during the first forum last year, in Athens. In meetings leading to the second round opening in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, China, Iran, Russia and Brazil, among others, won an opening-day panel devoted to "critical Internet resources."

Sam's Tip of the Week

So, I'm going to start writing tips with anything that could do with computing here every week. They could be software, hardware, Mac OS, Windows, anything.

I'll start off with a tip specific to Windows:

ClearType, the sub-pixel font rendering technology present in Windows since XP, makes fonts look great on LCD displays. Learn more about ClearType here.)

Unfortunately, it doesn't always look so hot. Some drivers (or lack thereof) can cause ClearType's rendering to be lighter than is optimal. In XP, this was much more common and needed tweaking on many machines before looking acceptable (probably the reason it's off by default in XP; you'll find the setting in the Effects dialog from the Appearance tab in the Display control panel).

In XP, you can to download the ClearType PowerToy or use the online tuner to tweak ClearType.

In Vista, you must use the online tuner.

In Windows 7 however, there is a brand new tuner included with the operating system. To access it, open the Control Panel and select the small or large icons view mode (category mode is a mess). Open Display, and then find "Adjust ClearType Text" on the sidebar. Open it up, and follow through the steps.
