Microsoft customers face 64bit question

How will buyers react as the software giant makes key future applications 64bit only?

Microsoft?s decision to make Exchange and other key future products exclusive to 64bit servers could delay buyers switching to the new programs.

Earlier this month, Microsoft said that ?to help customers take full advantage of the power of 64bit computing?, forthcoming products including Exchange Server 12, the Centro infrastructure software for mid-sized firms and the R2 update to Windows Server Longhorn would be exclusively 64bit.

Vista Performance and Reliability Pack Unofficial Release

Thanks Nekrosoft for the news on this major update to Windows Vista that should for most of us improve the speed and reliability of Windows Vista significantly!

Please note: These fixes break all current methods of bypassing driver singing requirements except the good old F8 during boot (that you have to do every single time you start vista)

IF you are using Rivatuner, atitool and or Peerguardian on 64bit vista, you will have to use F8 every single time to disable driver signing requirements to use those two programs. x86 version is unaffected.

These updates should go official on the next patch Tuesday (in one weeks time). Please read more for the download links and information on these updates.

Live OneCare Home Page Crashes Internet Explorer 7 x64

So I'm sitting here trying to get the Windows Live OneCare version 1.6 story up on the front page, and I can't figure out why Internet Explorer 7 keeps crashing. I've never ever seen it crash before. And yet, it always seems to happily commit suicide right before I'm done putting the news article together. I finally track the problem down to the fact I keep launching the OneCare home page to grab the link.

Yes, you read correctly. It would appear that Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare home page causes IE7 64bit to crash. I took the liberty of downloading Firefox x64 to make sure it had nothing to do with 64bit web browsers in general. Nope, Firefox loaded the page just fine. How embarrassing for Microsoft. The issue has been reproduced on two separate Windows Vista machines with entirely different configurations. Can anyone confirm the issue with IE7 x64 on XP?

Note: On Vista x64, IE7 32bit will load the site correctly.

PINNED: Windows Vista Build 5381 Released to Testers

Suprisingly, Microsoft have just released an interrim build of Windows Vista (Build 5381) to testers, via MS Connect. The build is available for both x86 and x64 platforms. The release of this build seems to have contradicted the recent article published by Paul Thurrot, in which he stated that Beta 2 would be build 5381, and would be released on the 22nd May.

The 32bit DVD is 2,296.55 MB, the 64bit DVD is 4,834.25 MB. Currently, users can only download from Microsoft's Redmond server as the Dublin and Singapore servers are experiencing problems.

32bit and 64bit XP, Vista SP1, Server 2008 Benchmarked

Trebuin: After seeing enough benchmarks out there that have been mis-run or talk without proof, I have finally finished benchmarking several versions of Windows to show the differences.

I conducted each test using an Dell XPS m1330 with the following specs:

200GB 5400RPM Hard Disk in ATA, not AHCI mode

2 Gigs RAM

Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.2GHz

NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS

174.94 GeForce Drivers

The test was conducted by wiping the previous partition, installing the operating system, installing the chipset and all drivers, installing the benchmark, and rebooting prior to testing. This allowed for each operating to start on an equal playing field.

Firefox 2.0 vs. IE7 in Vista: How Close?

Whatever Firefox 2.0 is, it isn't "sweeping," and nowhere does that fact become more evident than in a Windows Vista test environment. Update: "Vista Capable" trial

The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

Neowin at Digital Life 2007: Microsoft's Booth

Microsoft took a three pronged approach to their booth this year. They decided to focus on Vista (again), Games for Windows, and Windows Mobile. Surprisingly, the Xbox 360 and Halo 3 were not highlighted in the least bit.

It actually surprised me to see Microsoft pushing Vista so hard, still. Compared to last year, before Vista was released, this year's Vista display was even larger and more in your face. There were more kiosks, sofas, and lots of Vista logos on anything that could bare one. We know about Vista, though, so let's move on.
