Vista Home Basic on 512MB? Hey, it works!

Everyone knows Windows Vista is a resource hog. Everyone says it doesn’t even get out of first gear without a gigabyte of RAM, and it takes 2 GB before it stops stuttering and stammering with each mouse click.

Xbox 360 Jasper motherboard with 512MB storage hitting US stores

When the Jasper motherboards started showing up in Xbox 360 consoles late last year there was reason for excitement -- quieter fans, more efficient design, and 256MB of internal storage to set gamers free of overpriced memory cards. Now the systems are receiving an unannounced storage boost, with an XboxHacker forum member braza noticing that his Japanese Arcade model sported a 4Gb Samsung NAND chip. That's twice the size of the old one, giving the equivalent of a 512MB internal memory unit. That first system was manufactured in April, and they're starting to hit US Arcade units as well...

Inno3D GeForce 7950GT 512MB review

Recently Nvidia presented us with their most up-to-date graphics solutions meant to capture the affordable high-end gaming arena, which was previously dominated by its own GeForce 7900GT as well ATI-based boards selling in the 趚 to 跌 range.

The new 7900GS and 7950GT products are available already from a number of manufacturers and retailers, selling for approximantely 赼 and 跌, respectively. This puts the GeForce 7950GT as the logical replacement for the 7900GT, as it costs just a fraction more yet should deliver better performance.

The question to be asked now is how will this new GeForce 7950GT compare to ATI's Radeon X1900XT? On paper it would seem to be anyone's guess, yet that is exactly what we are here to find out today.

ECS GeForce 8500 GT 512MB review

From the Guru of 3D; he checks out the GeForce 8500, the latest offering from Nvidia.

Since Guru3D (and we do say this with a little shame) never reviewed a GeForce 8500 to date they gladly accepted the offer of ECS to submit such a card to them for a review. So in house today a graphics card that I'd probably never would buy, a GeForce 8500 GT. But fact is; it's probably one of the cheapest graphics cards money can buy.

This is Guru3D, so they had to at the very least a little exorbitant and opted the 512MB model, hey it's still priced only 80 EUR including that amount of memory. And low-end or not... I must say I had a hell of a good time with this card. Overclocking and tweaking was so much fun... we boosted roughly 30% more performance out of this card... easily.

ATI Radeon HD 2600XT vs Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS

Looking for the best mainstream videocard...
While Nvidia remains quite dominant in the high-end segment, a much larger battle has taken place to offer the best mainstream graphics product. Currently the two leading mainstream cards are the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS and the ATI Radeon HD 2600XT, both of which are priced well under $200.

Today we will be comparing these two mid-range graphics cards head to head using a 512MB VisionTek Radeon HD 2600XT and a 256MB ASUS GeForce 8600 GTS. While neither product features overclocking out of the box, the Radeon has an obvious advantage in that it sports twice as much video memory. And while this may appear to be unfair, we have found that the average 512MB Radeon HD 2600XT graphics card retails for just $140, while the average price of a GeForce 8600 GTS sporting 256MB of memory is $160.

Inno3D GeForce 8800 GT OC review

So how do you make an end of life product look like new again and more importantly how do you make it sell like hot cakes? Well you would do exactly what Nvidia has done with the GeForce 8800 GT: make it nearly as fast as your high-end product and sell it at half the price!

For those holding out to see what the next generation ATI graphics cards are going to be like, you may as well find the 8800 GT too hard to resist and I am sure this is exactly what Nvidia is banking on, stealing a little thunder from whatever AMD has got to show us soon.

The GeForce 8800 GT was officially launched on October 29th and was made available on retail immediately. Today just two weeks later, the card is supposed to be everywhere but its been extremely hard to keep up with the demand for the card. Nvidia announced that the suggested retail price for the GeForce 8800 GT would be $200 for the 256MB version and around $250 for the 512MB version. Currently the average 512MB 8800 GT graphics card costs between $270-$290, slightly above the MSRP, which is not that unusual for a product that has only just recently been released.

Samsung begins volume producing 60nm DRAM

Samsung Electronics announced today that it has begun mass producing the industry's first 1Gb DDR2 DRAM using 60nm-class process technology. Use of the new process technology is a significant milestone in that it increases production efficiency by 40% over the 80nm process technology deployed in DRAM fabrication since early 2006, and offers twice the productivity of 90nm general process technology.

Ample market availability of 1Gb DRAM will further increase the demand for large density DRAMs, especially as the new premium Vista operating system imposes a DRAM requirement of at least 1GB. Samsung's line up of 60nm 1Gb DRAM-based modules includes 512MB, 1GB and 2GB densities supporting either 667Mbps or 800Mbps speeds with customer validation. Samsung anticipates such a high degree of receptivity to the 60nm process that it should drive greater demand for 1Gb DRAM chips in the near future over today's mainstream density of 512Mb.

Micron announces its 78nm-made DDR3 validated with Intel

Micron Technology announced that its 1Gbit DDR3 have been validated with Intel desktop platforms. This DDR3 is being fabricated on Micron's 78nm 6F² process, which results a smaller die size premium over DDR2 compared with 512 megabit (Mb) products. offer lower power on modules that can utilize either 512Mb or 1Gb and meet the minimum system density requirements of 1GB. Micron's DDR3 products support data rates of 800 megatransfers per second (MT/s) to 1,066 MT/s with clock frequencies of 400MHz to 533MHz, respectively, doubling the speed from DDR2. The DDR3 supply voltage has been reduced from 1.8V to 1.5V, reducing power consumption by up to 30%.

Evaluation samples of Micron's 1Gb DDR3 components are available to select customers with production expected to begin early next year. Micron's 1Gb DDR3 components will be available in various output configurations (x4, x8 and x16), and will be fully compliant with the most recent JEDEC DDR3 specifications. These components will support module densities from 512MB through 4GB and a variety of module types, including UDIMMs, SODIMMs, and RDIMMs.

Sapphire Readies DirectX 10 Graphics Cards for Old Computers

Sapphire Technology, one of the world's largest producers of graphics cards, is planning to release three graphics cards featuring ATI Rialto bridge, which allows GPUs originally architected for PCI Express to work on platforms supporting AGP 4x or 8x. The new cards fully support DirectX 10 and are based on the latest ATI Radeon HD 2000-series GPUs. The new graphics boards are Sapphire Radeon HD 2600 XT (800MHz core, 1400MHz memory) with up to 512MB of GDDR3 memory, HD 2600 Pro (600MHz core, 1000MHz memory) with up to 512MB GDDR3 memory onboard and HD 2400 Pro (525MHz core, 800MHz memory) with up to 256MB of GDDR2 memory onboard.

Both Radeon HD 2600 and 2400 are fully compatible with DirectX 10 and feature advanced Avivo HD video engine, however, the model HD 2600 sports 120 stream processors, 8 texture units and 4 render back ends, whereas the model HD 2400 has only 40 SPs, 4 TUs and 4 RBEs. Even though some end-users may find the new graphics cards useful, as all of them is likely to be priced at below $199, it is unlikely that the new graphics cards will allow them to play modern games, as microprocessors on the vast majority of AGP systems are outdated for contemporary games, whereas DDR memory upgrades are already more expensive compared to DDR2 memory upgrades. It is unclear when Sapphire starts to sell the new AGP graphics boards.
