Free Vista Sunday, 3D desktop with Real Desktop Light

Jonathan Schlaffer: Vista has been an all-around disappointment and even those with SP1 have reason to complain. Those with problems are probably more outspoken than those that dont but the issues keep piling up and Microsoft does little about them. This program may brighten up your Vista experience a tiny bit.

Real Desktop comes it two forms, Real Desktop Standard and Real Desktop Light; major differences set the two apart. With Real Desktop Standard you get all the features and with Light, not so much.

The light version gives you a basic, fully 3D desktop environment. You can stack icons, drag them anywhere on the desk, flip them around, upside down and several other neat things. What you cant do is change the wallpaper or orientation of the camera. The other thing thats annoying is the light version lacks the ability to reset the icon positions; as you can see below, its very easy to mess them up.

3D desktop revealed in recent Apple patent filing

Dozens of Apple patent applications were published lately revealing research that Apple had completed in 2007 on many topics encompassing future versions of Mac OS X. The most intriguing is a series of patent applications which describe a "Multidimensional" user interface. Apple has essentially been working on true 3D desktop environments. It's not clear when and if Apple will decide to implement these new 3D desktop design ideas into a future version of Mac OS X. The 3D desktop idea suggests that Apple would take their existing Mac OS components like the dock, dashboard, add more depth and give a three dimensional look.

Gaming on Vista 10 to 15 Percent Slower than XP

Microsoft is reportedly telling it's gaming industry associates that games will run 10-15% slower on their new operating system due to the new GUI implemented.

Vista's new 3D desktop will constantly be draining the PC of video memory that games could make use of, so in actual fact many of your favourite games will probably run faster on Windows XP. Of course after Vista arrives new PCs and hardware will be built especially for Vista which will increase performance anyway.

Still, looks like that pretty desktop has a price after all.

Exclusive eWEEK research indicates that Microsoft's desktop Windows operating system is a rousing success.

The majority of respondents also indicated that the move to Vista will not be driven by any improvements the new OS offers, but rather by new hardware.

Power efficiency enhancements in Vista SP1

Long Zheng: Most if not all the attention surrounding Windows Vista Service Pack 1 has been around performance, reliability and compatibility, but you probably didnt know SP1 also makes short strides in terms of Vistas power efficiency. And by short, I really do mean short because were talking about improvements in the magnitude of only a couple percents. That in the context of 5 hours battery life is a mere additional 6 minutes. Having said that, some is better than none.

The first of two improvements is in the display subsystem. As you are probably aware of, the Desktop Window Manager (DWM) in Vista utilities the 3D rendering capabilities of your graphics card to draw the desktop and windows.

The Advantages of Upgrading From Vista To XP

This article does have quite a unique twist to it...

Coding Sanity: I have finally decided to take the plunge. Last night I upgraded my Vista desktop machine to Windows XP, and this afternoon I will be doing the same to my laptop.

Look & Feel

Windows XP has quite a cartoony look and feel compared to the slick look of Aero Glass; this is mostly offset by the lack of strange screen artifacts caused by malfunctioning graphics code. You know, almost like static on the screen. This was a once or twice monthly occurrence on my laptop, and happened on my desktop whenever I logged in, and also whenever I played a 3D game after leaving Vista running for a couple of hours. I also miss the "orphaned windows" I got on Vista, dialog boxes that would not go away, in a sense they became part of the desktop, since you could drag a selection from within them, despite the fact that the Glass would render the selection below them. Such crazy graphics bugs appear to be a thing of the past.

Stardock outlines Object Desktop for Vista plans

Software developer Stardock Corp. has begun to unveil its Windows Vista plans for its popular desktop enhancement suite, Object Desktop. Object Desktop is a set of programs designed to allow users to customize their Windows experience. On Windows, it was the first product to provide OS skinning, widgets and gadgets, alpha blended shadows, min/max effects, ZIP files as folders, and a number of other features that users take for granted today.

Stardock believes that Windows Vista offers the most potential yet for users to be able to personalize their Windows experience. This is due to a new feature in Windows Vista known as the Desktop Window Manager (DWM) which is a compositor that turns the Windows Vista desktop into a 3D surface (much like you'd have in computer game). This allows for what Stardock claims is "cool and interesting ways to display information, programs, and data without suffering the performance hit because most of it is being done on the video card."

This week, Stardock intends to release the beta of WindowBlinds for Windows Vista for Object Desktop users and has announced support for creating gadgets for the Windows Sidebar using DesktopX. It has released a document outlining some of its "first wave" of Windows Vista applications for Object Desktop. This also includes the ability to use WPF and .NET for Sidebar gadgets via Object Desktop.

Microsoft's Jim Allchin has asked developers to make full use of Windows Vista in order to help differentiate Windows Vista from Windows XP. With its expected January release, a lot of users are looking for tangible benefits of Windows Vista over Windows XP. Microsoft has asserted that the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and DWM along with enhanced security, and a new communications layer help make Vista a compelling upgrade.

Parallels 3.0 supports 3D games, 'SmartSelect'

Parallels on Thursday announced http://www.parallels.com/en/pr oducts/desktop/upgrade>Paralle ls Desktop 3.0 for Mac. This new version supports 3D gaming and adds a new feature called SmartSelect.

Parallels Desktop enables Intel-based Mac users to run Windows on their Mac at the same time as Mac OS X no reboot is required, unlike with Boot Camp, Apples own software to run Windows on Mac OS X. The software costs $79.99, and the 3.0 version will be available for a $49.99 upgrade fee. Parallels is also offering a reduced price for the upgrade for $39.99 now through June 6, 2007.

New to this release is a feature called SmartSelect. SmartSelect is billed as an integration tool that lets you open up any file from Windows or Mac OS X using an application from either operating system. Its designed to dovetail with the Coherence integration software in the currently shipping version of Parallels that enables users to open Windows applications directly from Mac OS X...

Windowblinds comes to Vista

Version 5.5 of WindowBlinds has been designed to enable Windows Vista to become skinnable. This is no easy task for a number of reasons. The biggest reason has to do with the new Desktop Window Manager (DWM). While technically WindowBlinds could have hacked its way to work on Vista, it was important that WindowBlinds work natively on Vista and that means using the new 3D composited desktop. By using the DWM you get hardware acceleration and a ton of other possible effects.

The second challenge was making visual styles (skins) made for Windows XP work on Windows Vista without parts missing. So Stardock developed "Smart Skinning" in which graphical elements in XP skins are translated to take care of new parts in Windows Vista.

Specifically, it does not include Quick Install, software that allows users to easily move files and applications onto the handheld or smartphone. The Palm Desktop still allows users to install Palm OS applications and databases ( .prc and .pdb files). ..
