Updates and Task Manager Disabled by New Windows XP Worm
The Windows functions are always under attack because disabling a vital function of the operating system automatically means an open door for the hacker, who would be able to infiltrate into the computer and conduct his malicious activities.

Brad Linder: Microsoft released an

ones, it seems inevitable that people are going to compare Windows Search to Google Desktop. Because you know, any time either company releases

Anyway, we've been
using Windows Search for the past few days and we thought we'd let you know how it stacks up against Google Desktop. Read on for the results.

04.06.2008Windows Vista SP1 vs. Windows Vista RTM vs. Windows XP SP2
Principled Technologies has released two Microsoft commissioned reports on Windows Vista SP1 performance. In these tests, Principled Technologies
measured responsiveness of Windows Vista SP1 vs. Windows Vista RTM vs. Windows XP SP2 when performing a set of common business and home tasks. The
results show that SP1 performs on par with Vista RTM and Windows XP.
The test show that as with Windows Vista RTM, overall performance is
on par with Windows XP. It’s important to remember that Windows Vista is a more advanced operating system, which includes many more capabilities
than Windows XP. By default, Windows Vista includes antispyware, a search indexer, and the shadow copy service. All these work in the background,
providing important services to customers, but they of course take up a portion of the PCs memory and processor resource.
On several common
business and home operations Windows Vista SP1 was noticeably more responsive after rebooting than Windows XP.

28.02.2008Windows Machines with More than 4 GB of RAM Have Limited Shut-Down Options
Windows Vista computers that come equipped with more than 4 GB of system memory have limited shut-down options. Essentially, the Hibernate option is
no longer available on Vista machines that feature in excess of 4 GB of RAM. This scenario affects both the 32-bit and the 64-bit editions of Vista,
but at the same time also Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft has confirmed that the issue is related to the large quantity of random access
memory.
"This issue occurs because hibernation is disabled on computers that
have more than 4 GB of RAM. Hibernation
requires sufficient disk space to contain the contents of the computer's memory. Performance is poor on a computer that has more than 4 GB of memory
and that has support for hibernation. Therefore, Microsoft has disabled support for hibernation on such computers," the Redmond company
revealed.

18.03.2008Microsoft changes Windows files on user PCs without permission, researchers say
Microsoft Corp. has started updating files on computers running Windows XP and Vista, even when users have explicitly disabled the operating systems'
automatic update feature, researchers said today.
Scott Dunn, an editor at the "
Windows Secrets" newsletter, said that nine files in XP and Vista -- but not the same files in each operating system -- have
been changed by Windows Update, the Microsoft update mechanism, without displaying the usual notification or permission dialog box. The files, said
Dunn, are related to the XP and Vista versions of Windows Update (WU) itself.
"We started hearing from readers that Windows was
modifying files in the middle of the night, even when Windows Update was turned off," Dunn said today. Some machines' event logs pinpointed Aug. 24
as the date when the invisible updates began, but on one of Dunn's personal machines, the log showed the changes taking place this week.

02.10.2009Microsoft Deployment New Feature: Windows Update
One of the new tasks and scripts in the Microsoft Deployment Lite Touch Task sequence is called Windows Update. This task is disabled in the default
task sequence for the Client Template. The task runs a script called ztiwindowsupdate.wsf. One item to note is that the current version of this
script requires client access to the Internet and also does not support proxy authentication. However if you meet those requirements, there are some
really nice advantages of using this action. Here is a brief description of what actions this script performs.
This script will
install and download updates from
Windows Update and
Microsoft Update over the Internet using the
Windows Update Agent API. By default this feature is disabled in
each Task Sequence, it must be manually enabled to run, and each computer must have a connection via proxy to the Internet. This script was designed
to run on Windows XP, 2003, Vista, and should be compatible with Windows Server 2008 when released.

14.11.2007Developers confirm, explain why they're avoiding Windows Vista
Windows developers are confirming the
results of
a survey released yesterday that found
fewer than one in 12
programmers are currently writing applications targeting
Windows Vista.
"None of our customers are saying, 'We need those WPF controls now!'" said Julian Bucknall, CTO for Windows programming tools maker

Windows Presentation Foundation.
Rather, "we find most are still sticking with ASP.Net and Windows Forms applications."

02.07.2008Filter Pack For Windows Search
Sarah Perez: I had been using the latest and greatest search tool for my XP PC,
Windows Search 4.0, but
somehow I had missed
this: the
Filter Pack for searching in Office documents. With the the
Microsoft
Filter Pack installed, Windows Search 4.0 is able to search within Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office 2007 documents based on the text they
contain. It also works for Vista too, adding new search capabilities which can be accessed right from Vista’s search bar. Now when you do a
search, the Windows indexing service doesn’t just search for file names but also knows what’s in the files themselves, and that makes
finding the right file so much easier.
IT admins will want to read further instructions found on the download page about how the new Filter
pack can be installed into Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, and other Server products. The Filter Pack also works on Windows Server 2003, Vista, and
XP. You can download it from
here.

21.10.2008Windows XP Exploit Shuts Off Windows Firewall
Detailed exploit code for a
Windows XP security
vulnerability has been
published on the Internet,
offering a roadmap for hackers
to disable the firewall
embedded in the operating
system. Microsoft on Oct. 31
confirmed it is investigating
the issue, which targets ICS
(Internet Connection Sharing),
a feature in Windows XP that
lets users share a dial-up or
broadband connection with
other users on a home
network.
A
spokesperson for the Redmond,
Wash., software giant said the
risk is minimized because ICS
is disabled by default in
Windows XP. "In addition,
once enabled, an attacker
could only attempt to exploit
this issue from the user's
local network: It cannot be
remotely exploited," the
spokesperson said in a
statement sent to eWEEK.
