Microsoft's Web Mail Gets Overhaul
The Hotmail millions (Microsoft reports 200 million users) know and perhaps love could be replaced. For the last seven months, Microsoft has been beta testing a radically different Web mail client, one that makes Hotmail's largely standard HTML interface look like yesterday's news. Kahuna supports drag and drop, right-clicking, multi-select and, in general, a much more Outlook-like look and feel.

New Web Mail: More Polished, Powerful
Microsoft and Yahoo are poised to make Web-based e-mail more powerful than ever with updates that bring a desktop-style interface to their respective Web mail offerings. We tested betas (currently invitation-only) of Windows Live Mail and Yahoo Mail, and also looked at an open-source newcomer called Zimbra. Windows Live Folders beta - more info
The folks over at LiveSide

Live Folders.
Here's a snip:
Windows Live Folders is
(sic) not a difficult to use
service, folder creation is
straightforward, as it the
uploading of files. Microsoft
is aiming Windows Live Folders
towards a large as market as
possible, so the basic
procedures need to be simple
to promote adoption amongst
the less tech-savy. The use of
ajax to create new folders is
nice, though the rest of the
site could do with a little
too. As we've seen with
Windows Live Hotmail though,
too much of a good thing can
be bad.

Windows Live Sync released for Windows- and Mac
Windows Live Sync, the replacement for the older Windows Live FolderShare service, is now available, for both Windows and Mac OS X users. Users
upgrading from FolderShare only have a few steps to follow in order to transition to the new service:
- Install the software on each of
your computers that previously ran FolderShare so Sync can automatically reconnect your synchronized folders.
- To keep sharing your
synchronized folders, you'll need to send your pals a new invitation. Don't worry if they don't have a Windows Live ID; we'll help them get set up
using their preferred e-mail address.
- Your synchronized folders will be set to automatically sync after migrating. If you'd prefer to sync on
demand, just visit the Sync website to adjust that.
So, what's new?
- Higher file limits—up to 20 synchronized folders (formerly
known as libraries) with up to 20,000 files in each one.
- Integration with Windows Live ID.
- Integration with the Recycle Bin.
-
Unicode support.
- More languages for Windows (46 in all).
- And lots of bug fixes.

Windows Live Folders not final name for cloud storage service - Windows Live Skydrive instead?
Some things just seem to keep
reappearing like a bad penny,
and for Windows Live its
undoubtedly the naming
strategy. Since the Folders
beta was expanded earlier this
week, the login page has referenced
the service as Windows
Live Skydrive. As we've
talked about previously,
Skydrive was the codename for
the cloud storage service
while it was in initial
development. We managed to get
the following official
comment:śWindows Live
Folders has always been a
placeholder name only and will
not be the final name of the
service when it ultimately
launches. We are not able to
publicly confirm any name
beyond Windows Live Folders at
this time; however, Windows
Live Folders is in beta, and
in addition to gathering input
and making changes to the
service, Microsoft will update
the name as well.ť
So will
Skydrive be the final name or
not? It definitely ranks along
the new "cool" names of
Popfly and Silverlight,
however it seem an unusual
step to use a codename for a
final product name. Even more
so when you consider the
current Senior Vice President
for Windows and Windows Live
allegedly dislikes codenames,
but lets not start Long
Zheng bashing him again.
To wrap
it all off, yes the domain http://skydr
ive.live.com/ has now
started working.

number is 12.0.1184.0517. This

Windows Live Mail is a

Outlook 2007/2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup
Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup
copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2002 and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders safely backed
up.
With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back
them up.
Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single
.PST file (usually called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List), but you might also have an additional .PST file that you
use for archiving ("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you back up any or all of these .PST files.

Chrome masks as Safari to fool Windows Live Mail
According to Google's Chrome Releases blog, Chrome-users no longer need to go out of their way to make Windows Live Mail/Hotmail work. In
addition to providing important security updates, Google's most recent version of Chrome--1.0.154.46--makes it easy for followers to use Windows
Live Mail. For some reason, Windows Live Mail does not work properly on Chrome, unless it thinks it is some other browser, such as Apple's Safari.
Previously, Chrome-users who had wanted to be able to use Windows Live Mail would have to switch the user-agent manually, but now the browser will
identify itself properly as "Chrome" for most normal sites but as "Safari" for URLs ending with mail.live.com.

Windows Live SkyDrive gets 1GB of storage
Today, Windows Live SkyDrive has received some updates to the service - including everyone now having 1GB of storage. Thats double what was previously
there. Along with increased storage, the SkyDrive Team has included a few more things worth taking note of:
RSS Feeds on Public Folders:
Users can now subscribe to an RSS feed for their Public folders. This allows folks to keep track of each others public files and stay up-to-date with
what is uploaded. You can subscribe to our Windows Vista Team Blogs Public SkyDrive folder here.
See who uploaded a file: you can now check
out and see who has uploaded specific files to your shared folders in SkyDrive. I have quite a few shared folders which are shared out to large
groups of friends - it is great to be able to see which files were uploaded by whom.
Add a contact directly within SkyDrive: you can now
add a friend via Windows Live SkyDrive instead of having to go to Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Hotmail.
Expect to see fixes and
tweaks across the board. Youll also notice that the UI around to Windows Live header has also been tweaked to include easy access to Windows Live
Spaces (such as your Friends List and Photos).

Microsofts renamed Windows Live SkyDrive service gets a refresh
As LiveSide.net predicted,
Microsoft has, indeed, decided
to dump the śWindows Live
Foldersť branding and go with
Windows Live SkyDrive for its
cloud-storage service that is
in beta test.
SkyDrive was one of the
codenames Microsoft used for
its storage service during its
development. (Microsoft is
saying that LiveDrive also was
a codename for the same
service and is not something
distinct, as opposed to recent
Microsoft information which
indicated that LiveDrive and
SkyDrive were not one and the
same.) When the company
announced the initial beta of
the cloud-storage service, it
changed the name to śWindows
Live Folders.ť Now Microsoft
is going back to Windows Live
SkyDrive as the final name for
the service.
Microsoft announced its
rebranding plans on August 9.
The company also refreshed and
added some features of the
SkyDrive service. Microsoft
tweaked the SkyDrive user
interface; added the ability
to drag and drop single files
or multiple files for upload;
provided a new śthumbnails
viewť; and introduced an area
designed to show other
customers SkyDrive folders
visited recently.

The Future of Windows Live Mail Desktop
There hasn't been much news
on Windows Live Mail desktop
since 2006, with a minor
update being released in
February. With most Windows
Live watchers expecting a v1
release at the beginning of
the year, many are wondering
what is happening to the
product. Dare Obasanjo even
joked at a rename to Outlook
Express Live.
It seems to be that
Microsoft is rethinking its
mail client strategy, with the
belief that two distinct free
mail clients for Windows Vista
(Windows Mail and Windows Live
Mail desktop) is not the way
to move forward.
Instead, Mail
desktop will evolve to become
an enhanced Windows Mail
client, which when installed
will replace Vista's Windows
Mail. For those familiar with
Mail desktop there will not be
a huge change however for
those using Windows Mail they
will benefit from the
integration of Live services.
While the
name and details of the new
product are unconfirmed,
hopefully we should soon see a
beta of Windows Live Mail for
Vista.
