Windows DreamScene coming soon on Ultimate

Windows Vista Ultimate users began to receive the first set of "Ultimate Extras". But arguably the most anticipated Ultimate Extra was not there -- Windows DreamScene.

Windows client director, Jeff Putt has confirmed that this extra will not be available in its final form immediately after launch. However, a technology preview may be coming soon for Windows Vista Ultimate users who want to give it a try.

Windows DreamScene enables users to use looping high-definition video content (MPEG, WMV) as an animated wallpaper. Thanks to the new 3D accelerated desktop in Windows Vista, the animated wallpaper uses virtually no CPU (just a little for decoding the video).

Microsoft demonstrated Windows DreamScene yesterday at the launch event which showed Windows DreamScene using an animated wallpaper created by Stardock . The wallpaper they showed will be available exclusively at Neowin.net's partner site, WinCustomize .com, in February.

More information on public availability for Windows Vista Ultimate users is expected soon.

Updated: The bridge to Microsoft, literally

If you've ever visited Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, WA, you've probably been stuck in and out of traffic as you travel to and from campus. As a journalist, I usually try to stay away from politics and news but this story is sure going to have the headlines in Washington D.C. throwing a fit. It's a pretty known fact now that the entire world is in a recession, and people are losing their jobs left and right. If you've been following the news relating to the economy, I'm sure you're very familiar with the $787 billion dollar Economic Stimulus package into law a few weeks ago.

New type of image spam hides in e-mail wallpaper

A new type of image spam found this week is able to bypass many filters by presenting a message as wallpaper within an e-mail, according to the vendor Secure Computing.

Image spam uses text embedded in an image to foil traditional spam filters that catch spam by scanning messages for key words and by using other text-based techniques. Normal image spam is delivered as an attachment or loaded into an e-mail via a url, says Paul Henry, vice president of strategic accounts for Secure Computing.

But a new type of image spam Secure Computing found this week takes advantage of e-mail stationery, which consists of an HTML template. When used legitimately, the template might contain a companys logo and the senders name and contact information, just like a piece of letterhead paper. ..

More Intel "Eaglelake" Plans Revealed

Intel guidance released its Bearlake-family chipset this year, first with the G33 and P35 Express models and later on with the G35 and X38 Express. Although Intel is still in the process of launching Bearlake, its latest roadmap has further details on its successor “ Eaglelake.

Eaglelake spawns the usual P, G and Q variants for consumer and business platforms. The Eaglelake-family features support for Intel Penryn-family, Yorkfield and Wolfdale, and other processors with front-side buses up to 1333 MHz. Intel continues to equip the Eaglelake-family with DDR3 and DDR2 memory controllers. DDR3-1333 and DDR2-800 is still the memory speeds of choice with Eaglelake. Eaglelake also introduces PCIe 2.0 for discrete graphics to the mainstream with all variants. Strangely, PCIe signaling on the south bridge is not PCIe 2.0 compliant.

Intel pairs the Eaglelake-family with a new ICH10 south bridge. Intel has put the ICH10 on a diet. ICH10 only provides Serial ATA, PCIe, USB and high-definition audio “ essentially legacy free. New to the ICH10 south bridge are FIS-based port multipliers. Multiple SATA devices can piggyback off a single SATA port with FIS-based port multipliers, without sacrificing I/O performance. ..

At last, a bridge between Windows Home Server and Media Center

With this week's release of Power Pack 2 for Home Server, Microsoft is filling a very important gap. Up until recently, the company had been maintaining that the place for users to store videos and multimedia was on their Media Center computers (generally Windows Vista Ultimate-based systems), and the place for their "everyday files" was their Home Server. But the biggest and most cumbersome "everyday files" are multimedia files, including those that deserve to be streamed and accessed by Media Center. While setting up Media Center to include a Home Server folder as one of its "watch folders" is one option for getting files listed, that's not as rich as setting up a streaming connection...
