Windows Performance Blog
As I said in yesterday’s introduction, my job as an engineer on the Windows Vista team is to improve performance. I wanted to look at a study that measure a key area that we focused on for Windows Vista – consistent responsiveness during the times that matter most to users (when starting up their machine, after being idle, and when you are under the gun running tons of apps, etc.).

to readily locate files, e-mail messages, and other items on their PC . With the release of Windows Search 4.0, the performance of the search tool
improved while adding much-needed manageability features for IT. Windows 7 along with the desktop search, introduces Federated Search in which the
scope of the search goes beyond your PC. You can now search for items in remote repositories from your PC. It is based on OpenSearch and the RSS
format.

12.01.2008New search site - Imagine Live Search
A new Live Search site
was brought to our attention
recently (thanks Jamie),
http://search.imagine-liv
e.com/. What's obviously
different is the sparse
homepage, notably the lack of
vertical search options, which
directs the users focus to the
search box and nothing
else.
Diving
in further, search results are
different too. There are no
vertical search options
present under the search box,
however they appear in the
right hand column with
suggested results
pre-populated. Users can see
the results from these other
search options alongside the
main web search results,
allowing users to quickly
refine their query as they
become more aware of what each
search option offers them.
While the related
searches option is already
present on the main Live
Search site, the addition of
Image Search and News Search
is a nice touch. The great
part is that Windows Live Maps
is embedded, auto-detecting
your location and presenting
local search results based on
your query. ..

Bing and Google Agree: Slow Pages Lose Users
Today representatives of Google Search and Microsoft's Bing teams, Jake Brutlag and
Eric Schurman respectively, presented the results of user performance tests at today's Velocity Conference. The talk was entitled The User and Business Impact of Server Delays, Additional Bytes, and HTTP
Chunking in Web Search. These are long-term tests were designed to see what aspects of performance are most important. To know how to improve
their sites both Bing and Google need to know what tweaks to page load perceptions and realities help or hurt the user experience. This is one of the
first performance tests that has actual data (and is not strictly anecdotal). The numbers may seem small, but they if you are dealing in
millions/billions they add up quickly.

What's Next From Google? Perhaps Reader Search, Hosted Google Enterprise
Google is pushing search in
new directions with universal
search and personalization.
It's the leader in Web search
by a large margin, and
doesn't look to give up its
crown anytime soon. And the
company has more search tricks
up its sleeves, including
Google Reader search and
potentially a hosted
enterprise search product.
Google
Reader, the company's
syndicated newsreader, is
search-less today, despite
significant demand for the
ability to search through news
feeds and other RSS
subscriptions. A few hacks to
search through Google Reader
feeds have even popped up on
the Internet. The Google
Reader team "gets the
message," according to Google
software engineer Matt Cutts,
and Google Reader search is
one of the top priorities on
the team's list.
Today, Google's
enterprise search product is a
piece of integrated hardware
and software. Tomorrow, it
could well be a hosted
service, if and when Google
figures out a model that
properly maintains the privacy
of corporate documents. The
beginnings of this are already
there: Google recently
released its Custom Search
Engine Business Edition, an
ad-free, $100 per year and up
service to search corporate
Web sites. ..
