The most common complaint we get from Lifehacker readers in Windows IT lockdown is that the majority of our tips require installing third-party applicationswhich you can't do if you don't have the right permissions on your PC. When the first Windows 7 beta (build 6801) was announced at PDC in late 2008, everyone was excited, myself included. Within a few days after release I was happily running my very first version of Windows 7. Right around new years day, Microsoft released the first public beta (build 7000) of the next gen OS. Since Microsoft was kind enough to share it with me, I decided to share it with everyone I know. Starting with my immediate family computers and expanding to my network of friends and coworkers. I went on a upgrading frenzy, installing Windows 7 on just about any PC I could get my hands on.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Earlier today I downloaded the standalone installer for Windows Vista SP1 build 6001.16659 and installed it on a few systems to see what it was like -- and I thought you might like to take a look at it.

Don't expect huge UI changes after installing SP1 -- the changes are small and subtle. In fact, if you're not familiar with Windows Vista, you might miss the SP1 changes. I've put together an image gallery showing some of the most significant changes.

Apple Acknowledges That Some iMacs Freeze Up

Apple has acknowledged receiving complaints about software update 1.1, issued September 13, that has resulted in iMacs freezing up during normal use, and said it would issue a fix as soon as possible. The update was issued to fix bugs, and was recommended for 20- and 24-inch iMac models with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8-GHz processors. The problem affects a " small number of iMac users. We are tracking down the root cause of this, and will issue a software update to correct it as soon as we can. Most likely later this month. We apologize for the inconvenience ," according to an Apple spokesman who declined to give exact numbers.

While Apple reported hearing customer complaints following the update, iMac users reported having problems with the new iMacs in August, the same month they were released. Some people reported the iMac freezing when opening various applications, such as iTunes, FrontRow, and iPhoto.

Dell not installing the latest Ubuntu on new netbooks

Dell's Mini 10v netbook that was launched last week has some nice new upgrades, including "wireless improvements" according to Betanews, but one thing that users shouldn't expect is the latest version of Ubuntu, 9.04, or even version 8.10. The netbook is currently being sold running Ubuntu 8.04 standard, but in an email that Dell sent to Betanews, they believed that installing the newest version is not in the best interest of the mainstream users. Dell has stated two main reasons for sticking with the older version. A Dell spokesperson said, "We are trying to stay on a 12-month cadence to keep costs down, and build a stable platform.

Flash 10 beta update means you should, too

The ongoing problems with Flash freezing in Firefox 3 after two seconds of playback resemble nothing less than a game of hot potato. Or perhaps watching two parents have a screaming match, with us regular ol' users playing the part of the sobbing kid that cries, "Why can't you two just get along?"

Adobe has just updated the Flash 10 beta for Windows and Mac, and with it comes the resurgence of the bug that installing the earlier beta fixed. There doesn't seem to be a given reason as to why the old beta is no longer viable, but it does work.

32bit and 64bit XP, Vista SP1, Server 2008 Benchmarked

Trebuin: After seeing enough benchmarks out there that have been mis-run or talk without proof, I have finally finished benchmarking several versions of Windows to show the differences.

I conducted each test using an Dell XPS m1330 with the following specs:

200GB 5400RPM Hard Disk in ATA, not AHCI mode

2 Gigs RAM

Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.2GHz

NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS

174.94 GeForce Drivers

The test was conducted by wiping the previous partition, installing the operating system, installing the chipset and all drivers, installing the benchmark, and rebooting prior to testing. This allowed for each operating to start on an equal playing field.

Installing Branded IE7 on Windows XP SP3

Jane Maliouta: Last week, I blogged about installing Windows XP SP3 and how it affects different versions of Internet Explorer (See my earlier blog post here). Today I will be discussing installing branded/custom versions of IE7 on machines with Windows XP SP3 installed. This post is primarily aimed towards folks who use the Internet Explorer Administration Kit 7 (IEAK7) to create custom IE7 packages, like Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and web developers. If you ever installed the IEAK7, built a custom version of IE7 or distributed a version of IE7 to others, this post is for you.

How to uninstall VS 2008 Beta 2 before installing the final version of VS 2008

Buck Hodges: There have been a few questions about how to correctly uninstall all of VS 2008 Beta 2 in order to install the final version of VS 2008. Scott Guthrie posted the steps for doing this earlier today. A subset of this list would apply if you have installed Team Foundation Team Explorer 2008 Beta 2, rather than the full VS 2008 with Team Explorer.

At the end he recommends rebooting after removing everything and before installing VS 2008. From my experience, that's good advice. The only thing additionally I've typically done after uninstalling a non-RTM build is to delete the VS 9.0 registry hives (HKLM and HKCU) and the VS 9.0 directory under "Program Files." Of course, there are no guarantees with this, editing the registry may render your machine nonfunctional, etc., so be careful and back up your data.

Installing Windows Server 2003 in a śViridianť VM

Mike Kolitz: Earlier this week, I posted instructions on how to install the "Viridian" CTP on Windows Server 2008 RC0. VMs arent very useful unless you can install an operating system in them, so I thought that todays post should center on doing just that. As you may have guessed from the title, today were going to talk about installing Windows Server 2003.

Before we begin, you should make sure that youve created an external virtual network switch. See yesterdays post for details on how to do that. You should also have a Windows Server 2003 CD or CD Image (which Ill refer to as an ISO from now on) handy. Ideally, youll have SP2 integrated into the installation media, but if you dont, well take a trip to Windows Update later on.
