29.10.2008Microsoft: Defence in depth is not enough
Defence in depth is simply not enough to create a secure computing environment, according to Microsoft's vice president of its Trustworthy Computing
group, Scott Charney.
Kicking off the 15th annual AusCERT conference on the Gold Coast today, Charney said that the Internet
largely remains an unsafe place to be despite Microsoft's best effort to make it safe.
"When you think about defence in depth
in the computer world, we've turned on firewalls, run antivirus, run anti-spyware, done user education, yet people sometimes get infected anyway,
which tells you those things are not enough," Charney told ZDNet.com.au .

19.10.2009Windows Vista Security One Year Later
Now that Windows Vista has been available to business customers for more than a year, it’s a good time to go back and look at how it’s
holding up from a security perspective. I think that it’s fair to say that Windows Vista is proving to be the most secure version of the
Windows to date. Our investments in the SDL and our defense in depth approach to building Windows Vista seem to be paying off. Let’s take a
look at some areas that we’ve made progress in: the impact of defense-in-depth; Internet Explorer 7’s protection of personal information;
vulnerabilities and infections; and cost savings. First, let’s look at the impact of defense-in-depth features like User Account Control and
Internet Explorer Protected Mode. These features have helped reduce both the risk and severity of security bulletins, giving enterprises more time to
deploy patches:

30.04.2009Call of Duty: World at War performance in-depth
Considering the high expectations built around Call of Duty: World at War it will be interesting to see how the game stacks up against other competing
shooters, but perhaps most importantly how it compares or improves upon last year's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare which was an all-around success
on the PC platform. 'World at War' was built using an enhanced version of the CoD 4 engine which should come as great news for PC gamers. Not
only do we expect this game to look really good because of that, but it should also fair quite well on systems with modest specifications.

17.11.2008First Look Under Windows 7's Hood in October
Windows 7, for the most part, has remained fairly mysterious so far. Granted, we wouldn't expect anything different since it's still years ahead
from being released, but it's always good to get bits of information sprinkled here and there. The new Engineering Windows 7 (E7 for short) blog,
which was created by engineering managers Jon DeVaan and Steven Sinofsky, points out two upcoming conferences in which "in-depth technical
information about Windows 7" will be revealed. The Professional Developers Conference (PDC) on October 27 will the first of the two, and the
aforementioned duo has promised to keep a steady stream of details flowing on their blog during the run-up.

21.10.2008EU Opens In-Depth Probe of IBM's Telelogic Buy
The European Commission announced today that it had opened an in-depth investigation of plans by IBM to buy Swedish business software company
Telelogic AB for about 5.2 billion crowns ($798.6 million). The proposed transaction raises competition concerns " given the strong market
position that IBM would achieve for certain types of software development tools, in particular so-called 'software modelling and requirements
management' tools ", the EU executive said in a statement.
The Commission now has 90 working days, until Feb. 20, to decide whether
the takeover would significantly impede effective competition. The decision to open an indepth inquiry does not prejudge the final result of the
investigation, it said. " After this transaction IBM would become by far the largest vendor of software development tools for software modelling
and for requirements management, " said Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes in the statement. " It is the Commission's duty to thoroughly
analyse the effects of such a transaction and to ensure that it would not harm competition in the software development tools sector. "

04.10.2007Crysis demo performance in-depth
Crysis is a highly anticipated first person shooter developed exclusively for the PC by Crytek, the makers of the award-winning Far Cry. The demo
offers PC gamers a quick look at what will possibly be the most advanced FPS ever created, you just have to swallow the huge 1.8GB download first. Im
sure many will agree that the demo is well worth the download though, offering the entire first level of the game which represents "roughly 45
minutes" of pure gameplay.
Today we are going to see how the various mid-range and high-end graphics cards handle this new and
exciting first person shooter. There will also be some brief visual quality comparisons along with some CPU scaling and DX9 vs. DX10 performance
charts. The single-player demo supports both DX10 and DX9 rendering in Vista while Windows XP users are limited to DX9. While the game has been said
to include 64-bit support, the demo can only be run in 32-bit mode, so there are no 32-bit vs. 64-bit comparisons just yet.

03.11.2006Global warming : Whose tech should we believe in?
The Register has an explosive in-depth look at global warming using NASAs own numbers. The conclusion is that depending on which publicly available
readings one uses, you could predict either catastrophic global warming or alarming global cooling.
"Which view is correct? Temperature
data should be simple enough to record and analyze. We all know how to read a thermometer - it is not rocket science," says Steven Goddard. But the
problem seems to be which thermometers does one choose to look at?
For example, the article points out that NASAs own sensors tell 3
different stories since 1998. The NASA satellite data sources show a slight global cooling since 1998. But NASAs ground based readings of
specific thermometers shows an increase in temperature? Which one to believe?
The article takes an in-depth investigative look at
how technology can be politicized depending on ones ideology.
