Weird Windows Vista File/Folder Manipulation "Bug"

I think this could be considered as one of the weirder but non-critical "bugs" in both Vista RTM and Vista SP1. Thanks to Plax for the find:

1. Create a folder somewhere and put a file inside

2. Then open an Open file dialog from some application

3. Go in the folder with the file and cut the file then rename the folder and paste the file somewhere else

4. Then you'll find out that instead of the file a folder appeared

Sharing folders vulnerable to buffer overflow

Even though the recent webcam vulnerability in MSN/Windows Live Messenger was only just addressed, another exploitable bug has already surfaced. This time it's a buffer overflow error that affects the Sharing folders feature in Windows Live Messenger 8.1 (and maybe other versions) running on Windows XP.

The safety of the Sharing folder feature got questioned before, but we now have a concrete example of how it can be abused. A Spanish security expert going by the name of Lostmon Lords has discovered that an attacker can cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS) or even execute arbitrary code in Windows Live Messenger 8.1 by means of a specially crafted jpg, wmf, gif, ico or doc-file.

The attacker can "Create a sharing folder" for its victim and then put the malformed file into the physical location of that folder on his hard drive (My Computer > My Sharing Folders > victim@hotmail.com). Note that if the attacker would drag & drop the file directly into the Messenger window, his own client would crash. Considering that the victim has accepted the sharing folder, the attacker can simply click the sharing icon to crash Windows Live Messenger, or even Windows XP entirely when the process isn't terminated in time. The victim then needs to delete the sharing folder entirely to cease the exploitation.

Microsoft Private Folder Released

Microsoft released today a file encryption program, called Microsoft Private Folder. The way it works is that it automatically creates you a folder and you can add files in it, which are encrypted as soon as you put them in.

The program is part of the Windows Genuine Advantage Offers, so you'll need to pass the Windows Genuine Advantage validation before installing. You'll need to set your location to United States using the scrollbar at the top of the page. Else, the offer won't be there.

Intel Unveils World's Thinnest Laptop, Almost as Skinny as a RAZR

Intel has just created a laptop that's as pretty as a supermodel, and thinner, too. Codenamed the Intel Mobile Metro Notebook, this prototype was designed by Intel along with Ziba Design, and it's a mere .7 inches thick and weighs just 2.25 pounds. It's no dumb blonde, either, packed with Intel's speediest and most efficient components, which will probably be plenty fast by the time this machine is manufactured, maybe even as soon as the end of this year.

This one has it all. The slim, champagne-colored magnesium notebook—which is only a quarter of an inch thicker than a Motorola RAZR cellphone—will include a magnetically attached folder that will be available in different fashion colors. That folder will also be able to charge up the laptop wirelessly, and ladies (at whom this design is clearly aimed) can attach a strap to it and make it look just like a purse. Jeez, what else did they include in this beauty?

It'll have always-on connectivity, using all Intel chips, of course, to connect via Wi-Fi, EV-DO and WiMax. It'll also have a flash memory hard drive, with an expected battery life of 14 hours. Check out the glow-in-the-dark, the screen on the outside of that folder, the beautiful gold accents, and the overall thinness of this thing. It's just astonishing...

Microsoft Says Thankyou! to Select Vista Testers

To everyone that took part in the Windows Vista beta test (as far as I know, about 20,000), only those that submitted at least 1 bug report will be offered a complimentary copy of Windows Vista Business or Ultimate.

Microsoft sent out a mail to those testers just a few minutes ago which specified that it is being offered as a download only. No media will be mailed, and only currently active, invited members of the Windows Vista technical beta program who filed at least one bug are receiving this offer.

Kudos to Microsoft! I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that they have really shown their appreciation towards the people that actually took the time to submit the bugs that were eventually worked out of the final code, some bugs that were submitted by beta testers didn't make the final, among those is the now infamous explorer folder selection bug* where the folder remains selected in the tree view, deleting a file or folder in the folder view (right pane) actually deletes the selection in the tree menu!

Microsoft had already announced that this was too late to be included in the signed off code and it will be fixed with a patch update.

*Workaround = Click on an empty area in the right pane first before deleting anything.

Hands on: More Vista mysteries

Several readers have been puzzled by Access denied messages when they try to open certain folders in Windows Vista Explorer or from an applications File Open or Save dialogue. For example, complained E Jones, C:Documents and Settings is not accessible. I do not understand why access to my own documents should be denied.

Another reader was frustrated by her inability to add shortcuts to the Send to folder. Ive been using this since Windows 95 and very useful it is too but how the heck do I open it?

There are a number of these folders around that cant be opened, and they are distinguished by faint folder icons with an arrow overlay. You only see them if you have both Show hidden files and folders ticked and Hide protected operating system files unticked in Folder Options, View.

Scientists double the capacity of rechargeable batteries

New research results presented today could bring companies such as Intel much closer to that goal of offering notebooks that achieve a battery running time of 8 hours and more.

Researchers of the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory claim to have developed an enhanced approach to building of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

Scheduled for an unveiling at the meeting of the Electrochemical Society today, the new technology is based on a "manganese-rich" nano-crystalline, layered-composite structure that is used as material for the positive electrode. According to an early announcement, the researchers are using a uses a two-component "composite" structure: An active component for charge storage is embedded in an inactive component that stabilizes the structure.

Office 2007 SP1 Installation/Slipstream Guide

Some of you may be wondering how to do a clean install of Office 2007 using an Office 2007 RTM image along with SP1 at the same time. As you may know, Office 2007 makes use of the Updates folder in the installation media to install any new updates that it finds in the folder however updates have to be in the .msp file format for them to be recognized. Since the Office 2007 SP1 update file is delivered in the .exe format, an extra step is required before being able to proceed:

First, you should copy the contents of the Office 2007 RTM image to a temporary folder. For our example we're using C:O2007Temp. We have also copied the Office 2007 SP1 Update file (office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe) to the D: drive.

Then, using the Run command in Windows XP/Vista (WinKey+R), run the following command:

replacing D: with wherever you stored the Office 2007 SP1 update file and C:O2007Temp with wherever you stored the Office 2007 RTM files. After agreeing to the Microsoft Software License Terms, SP1 will be extracted to C:O2007TempUpdates.

That's it! Just start the setup for Office 2007 and the updates for SP1 will then be picked up and installed during the setup. The same method applies to any other Office 2007 SP1 update.

Microsoft Prefers Solo Yahoo Deal?

Microsoft Corp wants to stick with its original takeover offer for Yahoo Inc, but is not ruling out News Corp joining its bid or other options, a source close to the company said on Friday.

Separately, a source familiar with the matter said News Corp continues to talk directly with Yahoo on reaching a deal without Microsoft. The source declined to provide details on what a potential deal structure would look like.

The source close to Microsoft said the company's preference all along has been to retain the original deal structure that would involve paying $31 per share in cash and stock to acquire Yahoo. But Microsoft has not ruled out bidding with partners.
