05.03.2008When Windows Update won't update
Lincoln Spector: Windows Update occasionally gets a bee under its bonnet and simply refuses to work. Really, should that surprise anyone?
Unfortunately, unlike some other Windows problems, this one seldom goes away on its own. You have to fix it. And the exact cause isn't
always easy to diagnose and fix.
I'll start with some solutions to a very specific, very common, XP-specific Windows Update
problem. Then I'll tell you where to go for additional advise.

week that's designed to help other vendors find and fix bugs in their own software.

07.08.2008HP one-ups Dell, others with 24h battery
HP today heated up
competition against Dell by announcing a special trim level of the
EliteBook 6930p that it believes sets a new
record in battery life. Through new firmware and graphics drivers, an Ultra Capacity battery pack, an LED-backlit display and Intel's just-launched
80GB SSD, the 14-inch notebook can last for as much
as 24 hours on one charge. The figure if accurate would beat Dell's claimed
19-hour record and would be enough to last an entire
Newark-to-Singapore flight with extra power left.

The impending IPv4 address allocation shortage has lead to a lot of speculation on the future of IPv6 (

going slowly —

IPv6... equivalent to the allowed parts of contaminants in drinking water.'

26.09.2008JavaScript 2's new direction
Standardization efforts for the next version of JavaScript have taken a sharp turn this month, with some key changes in the Web scripting
technology's direction. JavaScript creator Brendan Eich, CTO of Mozilla, has helped forge a consensus on how to proceed with the direction for
JavaScript's improvements. "JavaScript was sitting still. It was stagnant," he says.
The fundamental reason to update
JavaScript -- whose standard hasn't changed since 1999 -- is to handle the heavy demands being placed on it. Although the language certainly has
caught on for Web application development, it was not envisioned for the workloads now demanded of it by developers, Eich says. "They're using it at
a scale that it wasn't designed for."
