Microsoft Cleared of Violating Pact

Microsoft has been cleared of allegations that it violated a court agreement to help software developers make their programs compatible with Microsoft software.

Microsoft - in a deal with the Justice Department, 17 states and Washington, D.C. - was ordered in 2002 to share software hooks known as application programming interfaces, or APIs, which let different programs work together.

Des Moines attorney Roxanne Conlin alleged in January that Microsoft has not disclosed certain APIs to software developers. She shared her evidence - including expert testimony - with the Iowa attorney's office and the Justice Department.

In court documents filed Tuesday, the plaintiffs found the allegations were not supported...

Sun explores parallel universe with Studio 12

Sun Microsystems today released Sun Studio 12, its latest IDE (integrated development environment) for C, C++ and Fortran. It's http://developers.sun.com/suns tudio/downloads/>freely available for Solaris and Linux software platforms and the update will be useful for developers building multi-core and multi-threaded applications, the company says.

Sun hopes that a combination of visual development for profiling and tuning and such like, with juiced-up performance using compilers for Solaris will convince GNU/Linux developers to pick Sun Studio 12, over Eclipse or tools using the Free Software Foundation's popular GNU Compiler Collection (GCC).

Previous versions of Studio supported Linux in the IDE and tools but not compilers. Sun aims to provide developers with the freedom of compiling to Linux or Solaris, without re-writing code, while also giving access to the fast Solaris architecture...

AMD proposes CPU extensions for multi-core apps

AMD is announcing plans to extend its CPU instruction set Tuesday to make it easier for software developers to exploit the power of multi-core processors when building applications.

The company's Hardware Extensions for Software Parallelism initiative represents an effort to help hardware and software become better integrated, said Margaret Lewis, vice president of software engineering at AMD.

AMD stressed that converting single-threaded software to be multi-threaded is a highly specialized skill and a challenge for developers. The extensions initially focus on performance analysis via the company's new "Light-Weight Profiling" specification accessible on AMD's site. This technology will enable real-time feedback for performance optimization that can be directly used by software, said Earl Stahl, vice president of software engineering at AMD. ..

Apple's App Store schizophrenia driving developers crazy

Apple's iPhone is, by all accounts, a success, and Apple may be on track to sell 5 million iPhone 3Gs this quarter. A big part of that success has come from the array of software options available from the App Store, the sole distribution point for third-party iPhone software. Though many developers are selling a lot of software, a significant number are becoming frustrated and angry due to Apple's recent decisions regarding which apps are fit for distribution; the situation has been made worse by reports that Apple has a policy that makes the rejection letters subject to a NDA.
