Vista says NO to old DVD drives
Windows Vista will no longer support DVD-ROM drives that do not handle region coding in hardware (RPC1 drives) - thus preventing playback of DVDs that are region/CSS encoded with those drives.
Not a big problem, as RPC1 drives haven't been officially manufactured since 2000 (and Microsoft claims their drives are all broken), but for those with hacked drives (RPC2 with RPC1 firmware), or move the RPC1 drive to new computers, well, no more DVD movies for you!

19.6.2009Hitachi GST announces first 7,200RPM 2TB hard drive
Its fun to think that ten years ago the biggest hard drive available was 73 gigabytes. However with the constant and near unstoppable push to solid
state drives, hard disk manufacturers must continue to press on. Fast forward to today and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies becomes just the first
vendor to announce a 2TB 7,200RPM desktop hard drive. Hitachi is not the first hard drive manufacturer to reach 2TB, Western Digital did that earlier
this year, but the first 2TB drives were limited to a read/write of 5,400RPM. Seagate hit 5,900 RPM earlier this year as well, but again these new
drives will have a distinct speed advantage.

07.08.2009Seagate plans SSD, 2TB hard drive for next year

The company's first SSD product will be targeted at enterprises that need speedy storage and can afford to pay a premium for the expensive
drives. Seagate has no plans to release SSD drives for consumers as the high prices could deter them for the next few years, Watkins said in an

The release date and price information for the 2TB hard drive were not available. Seagate released 1TB hard drives,
the Barracuda 7200.11 and Barracuda ES.2, in the middle of 2007.

achieved by a 7200RPM drive, Seagate claims. The 64MB cache provides "screaming burst rate speeds and improve
overall performance," according to

Seagate and Dell offer self-encrypting drives
Seagate and Dell have announced that they will be shipping laptops with self-encrypting solutions for hard drives up to 320GB. The company said this
was a move to prevent data theft on stolen laptops from being recovered.
With rising thefts on notebooks, this solution would help ensure
companies protect their data from being recovered by hackers. Dell is also working on self-encrypting solutions for larger hard drives, up to
500GB.
Dell will be the first computer manufacturer to ship laptops with self-encrypting hard drives. McAfee will be the provider for
software for laptops, with Seagate hard drives for larger businesses. This will be combined with McAfee’s Data Privacy Law Compliance with each
drive.
The self-encrypting hard drives will be available in 5400rpm, and 7200rpm models, with a maximum of 500GB storage. This will be the
release of Seagates new Momentus FDE (full disk encryption) laptop hard drives.
According to the FBI, in 2005, laptop theft totalled more
than 6.7 Million dollars. The FBI also stated that a laptop is stolen every 53 seconds, and only 3% are recovered.

Seagate to make flash-based hard drives
Seagate Technology, the number one maker of magnetic hard drives, is going to make hard drives based around flash memory too, says CEO Bill
Watkins.
"We are going to have a solid state drive, probably for enterprise first," he said during an interview on Wednesday.
"We think we can make these drives better."
Seagate's decision is a significant turning point in the religious war in the
storage market. The flash versus magnetic debate has been issue No. 1 in the storage world for the past two years. Magnetic hard drives have been a
crucial component for servers, PCs and notebooks for years. Magnetic hard drives cost far less in terms of cost per gigabyte and typically hold more
data than flash devices. At CompUSA, a 500GB desktop drive on sale sells for $109, or as much as two 4GB flash drives. The price disparity exists at
wholesale too. ..

Seagate firmware update bricks 500GB HDDs
Just days since Seagate released a firmware update for a range of hard drives, which were hit by firmware bugs, Tom's Hardware reports that things
don't look much brighter for hard drive giant Seagate. This time the problem is with the SD1A firmware update, for the 500GB hard drives in the
7200.11 series, which many unhappy customers have said completely bricks the hard drive. The problem lies in the firmware update, which causes the
drive to freeze up. As far as un-bricking the devices goes, there has been little success. Some have claimed that downgrading the firmware has fixed
the problems, for the moment.

Seagate to pay refund over gigabyte definition
Seagate Technology, the world's largest hard-drive maker, is offering customers a five percent refund on drives bought during the last six years
following a lawsuit over the definition of a "gigabyte". As an alternative, customers can choose to receive free backup software.
Four people sued the company, saying they expected its drives to offer greater capacity than that actually provided. Seagate manufactures its
drives based on powers of ten, with 1KB equalling 1,000 bytes. The claimants argued that 1KB of storage should compromise 1,024 bytes.
On a 1GB drive, this would make the difference between one billion bytes of storage, and 1,073,741,824 bytes. Other manufacturers, such as
Samsung and Hitachi, also measure hard-drive capacity with 1KB equalling 1,000 bytes, whereas all operating systems are based on 1KB equalling 1,024
bytes.

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 (1 Terabyte) HDD review
The terabyte race for consumer
desktop hard drives has been
on for a long time, now the
first generation of drives is
here. On April 25th, Hitachi
announced that it would begin
shipping the Deskstar 7K1000,
their latest series of
consumer hard drives,
weighting in at 750GB and a
monstrous 1000GB (1TB). The
1TB version which we are
reviewing today is slated at
$399, a serious price tag
for this colossal amount of
storage.
The
Deskstar 7K1000 represents a
milestone for Hitachi and for
the hard drive industry as a
whole, as it is the first
drive to offer a 1 terabyte
capacity. However, Hitachi has
not simply grabbed five 200GB
platters and stuck them
together to create a 1TB hard
drive. Rather, there is much
more to the Deskstar 7K1000,
such as its Serial ATA II
interface and the massive 32MB
memory buffer. This is also
the first desktop Hitachi
drive to feature PMR
technology (Perpendicular
Magnetic Recording).

Hitachi releasing Power Saving Green Hard Drives
Hitachi has announced it will be releasing green hard drives this quarter with up to 40% better idle power savings. The pricing will be comparable
with non-green devices. Hitachi will remain at 7200rpm throughout all of its green products, which include 250 GB, 320 GB, 400 GB and 500 GB drives in
parallel or serial ATA.
Hitachis 3.5-inch product marketing manager, said, "our specs are up to 59 percent better than the
competition. Weve reduced idle power by 40 percent as compared with our previous drives, the T7K500." In addition, she said that the new hard
drives will consume a maximum of 7 watts.
Hitachi plans to implement their green technology model into all of their drives eventually.
Hitachi plans to release the green drives this quarter. The P7K500 has a suggested retail price of $160, which is comparable to their current 500
GB deskstar product, the T7K500, which is selling online for about $130 on average.
