Cray Computer Founder Joins Microsoft
Microsoft confirmed on Friday that Burton Smith, formerly the chief scientist for Cray, would be joining the company as a technical fellow. Smith will work to expand Microsoft's efforts in parallel and high-performance computing, and would report to chief technical officier Craig Mundie.
Smith had worked with Cray since its inception as Tera Computer Co. in 1988. He has also published several works on issues regarding parallel computing. "As microprocessor technology continues to evolve over the next decade or so, we're going to see the capabilities of a supercomputer cluster on the desktop which will require a different software architecture," Mundie said. "Burton will be investigating how to develop software to benefit from the opportunities which multi-core multiprocessors will present."

On Tuesday morning in San

it had never done before. In
1976, it basically created the
personal computer industry; if
it had ever come into fruition
without Apple, the computer
today would probably be

12.01.2007EU Official: IP Addresses are Personal Information
IP addresses, string of numbers that identify computers on the Internet, should generally be regarded as personal information, the head of the
European Union's group of data privacy regulators said Monday. Germany's data protection commissioner, Peter Scharr, leads the EU group
preparing a report on how well the privacy policies of Internet search engines operated by Google Inc., Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. and others comply
with EU privacy law. He told a European Parliament hearing on online data protection that when someone is identified by an IP, or Internet protocol,
address "then it has to be regarded as personal data." His view differs from that of Google, which insists an IP address merely identifies the
location of a computer, not who the individual user is - something strictly true but which does not recognize that many people regularly use the same
computer terminal and IP address.

22.01.2008Download Uproar: Record Industry Goes After Personal Use
Despite more than 20,000 lawsuits filed against music fans in the years since they started finding free tunes online rather than buying CDs from
record companies, the recording industry has utterly failed to halt the decline of the record album or the rise of digital music sharing. But in an
unusual case in which an Arizona recipient of an RIAA letter has fought back in court rather than write a check to avoid hefty legal fees, the
industry is taking its argument against music sharing one step further: in legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale,
Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who
has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

29.11.2005Dells All-in-One PC Has the Guts, Design To Compete With iMac
Something interesting is going on at Dell. The Texas personal-computer behemoth, long associated with boxy, boring machines, has started emphasizing
industrial design. And the company, which in recent years seemed to care only about corporate customers, techies and hard-core gamers, appears once
again interested in average, mainstream consumers who value simplicity.
The most tangible example of this new approach is Dells
XPS One desktop an elegant, handsome, cleverly designed one-piece computer. If it didnt have the Dell logo on it, the XPS One might be mistaken for a
product of the PC industrys design leaders, Apple or Sony.

09.05.2007Outlook 2007/2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup
Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup
copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2002 and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders safely backed
up.
With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back
them up.
Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single
.PST file (usually called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List), but you might also have an additional .PST file that you
use for archiving ("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you back up any or all of these .PST files.

08.05.2008When your significant other is a computer
Its the relationship you spend more time on than any other. It has deepened even during the past few years. When things go wrong, you become enraged
and tearful and attack inanimate objects but youre willing to spend hours making things right.
Obviously, were talking about
your relationship with your personal computer.
Consider this: In a survey earlier this year, 64 percent of Americans say they
spend more time with their computer than with their significant other. Meanwhile, 84 percent said they were more dependent on their computer than they
were three years ago.
Those were just a couple of the recently released findings from a consumer survey conducted in January for
SupportSoft Inc., a firm in Redwood City, Calif., that makes software for computer help desks. Anthony Rodio, the firms chief marketing officer, said
SupportSoft commissioned the survey to test the waters before getting into the consumer market.

10.07.2006A day on the Surface: a hands-on look at Microsofts new computing platform
It's not often that one gets a chance to attend a demonstration of a new method of human-computer interaction.
Having been too
young to witness the development of the command line in the 1950s or the modern graphical user interface at Xerox PARC in the 1970s, it was a genuine
thrill to visit Microsoft's campus for a personal demo of "surface computing." While future computer historians are unlikely to view this
technology as being anywhere near as groundbreaking as the CLI or GUI, the multi-touch interface nonetheless serves as an innovative way of
interacting with the personal computer.
Microsoft Surface has taken many years to come to fruition. The original idea was
developed in 2001 by employees at Microsoft Research, and it was nurtured towards reality by a team led by chief architect Nigel Keam. Not content
with merely coming up with a new idea, the Surface team is committed to actually releasing it to the commercial market as early as the end of 2007.
From there, the team hopes that the product will make its way from retail and commercial establishments to the home, in much the same manner as
large-screen plasma displays have migrated out of the stadium and into the living room over the past few years.
