Flexible Smartphone Screens

Smartphones are great multi-functional devices able to replace the functions of cameras, torches, navigation units, media players, organisers and voice recorders. Following this, Sony responded with their own 0.3mm thick e-paper. Move forward a year and in October, Sony showed some improvements they had made on their flexible OLED screens through research.

8.8 megapixel projectors coming to movie theaters

Sony said that it will begin installing 54 4K digital cinema projectors, each providing four times the resolution of 1080p, in U.S. movie theaters next month.

The first SXRD 4K systems will be going to AMC theaters in Dallas (12 screens), Indianapolis (14 screens), Riverside, Calif. (16 screens) and San Diego (12 screens). Sony will be installing both its SRX-R210 10,000 lumen and the SRX-R220 18,000 lumen unit, which provide a maximum resolution of 4096x2160 pixels and be used on screen sizes ranging from 42 to 60 ft.

According to Sony, the high resolution will virtually eliminate artifacts in frames even for people watching a movie from the front row. Pixels are set an 8.5 micrometer pitch with an intra-pixel gap of 0.35 micrometers. Each of the roughly 8.8 million pixels is just about the size of the letter e in the Liberty Quarter, Sony said.

MacBook Air spurring LED use in screens

The MacBook Air has become the best advertisement for why companies should use LED (light-emitting diode) backlights in notebook screens, and is driving adoption, according to market researcher DisplaySearch.

LED backlights in display screens are an improvement over old CCFL (cold-cathode florescent lamps) technology for several reasons, including a stunning picture due to more vibrant contrasts, better power savings, and they're easier on the environment because they contain no mercury and last longer. They also helped make the MacBook Air a marvel of thinness because they take up less space inside a screen. LED backlights are about half as thick as CCFL backlights, according to Luke Yao, an analyst at DisplaySearch.

Apple admits some iPod touch players shipped with faulty screens

Apple this week confirmed reports that some of its new iPod touch players left its manufacturing facilities with defective screens and said the company is actively working to remedy the issue.

Several iPod touch customers have reported that their 16GB players exhibit an issue where playback of dark video scenes is almost unwatchable, and have further suggested that Apple may have equipped the new players with screens that are inferior in quality to those used in the iPhone.

"some early iPod Touch units have had defective screens, where images appeared too dark," the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg revealed in his own review of the player published Thursday. "Apple says this problem affected a small number of units and is being remedied."

Tablet PC Screens Modded into a Giant DS

Someone has modded 2 tablet PC Screens and a DS so that the touchscreen functions of the DS work on the larger LCD screens. Using a pass through device, the DS is able to transfer data back and forth, allowing for more than just a fancy display. It looks like you still need to use the buttons on the DS for games that require them, but for a game like Meteos, which is shown above, this thing looks pretty awesome. The creator also documented his process with photos, showing this device is no hoax. Thanks, Jeromy.

Despite Windows 7's release looming over the horizon, ZDNet has stated that Steve Ballmer himself said, "Office 14 will not be this year," in an interview with analysts at the Wall Street Journal. Keen readers will notice that Ballmer called it Office 14, and not Office System 2009 which it could possibly be named on release. First Office 14 screenshot unveiled?

Microsoft enthusiast and blogger Stephen Chapman sends word that he has discovered an early concept Office 14 screenshot from a PowerPoint presentation hosted on Microsoft.com. The screenshot itself appears to be from a slide deck detailing Grava's intergration into Office 14. Grava is a set of tools developed for the needs of those creating educational content. Stephen says he "noticed that instead of the Office logo in the orb, there's a 'G' to obviously signify Grava, so does this mean we're looking at a standalone Grava application or a conceptual idea for how the interface of Office might change to signify the user is currently using Grava?
