The Problem with Creative and Windows Vista
Don't get me wrong, they make great hardware, but Creative is not known for their efficiency in writing drivers for their hardware. Their Beta 1 drivers are relatively buggy compared to other Beta 1 drivers on the market for Graphics Cards, Network Cards etc, but with a big enough target market and enough technical staff I see no reason why they can't keep up.

08.09.2008MS: "Small problem" with Gears of War on PC
Microsoft has been quick to point out a "small problem" discovered with the PC version of Gears of War - out this week - but happily
has provided details on how to resolve the issue.
It's all to do with the very first time you play Gears of War, when an automatic update for Games for Windows - Live is downloaded.
Rather than the game being shut down to complete the update as should occur, instead after the update is downloaded you're dropped back into the
game's main menu.
"There's two ways to get over this bump", Microsoft has explained.
"The easiest is to
simply shut down the game after the update is downloaded (you'll know it's safe because you'll be back at the main menu, and not on the "Don't
shut down your PC while the update is being downloaded" screen). As soon as you close the game, the update will install automatically and you're
good to go.

service packs. If you currently apply your updates automatically then this update will not modify the look and feel of Automatic Updates.

20.02.2008Microsoft's stealth updates stymie XP repairs
The contentious stealth update that Microsoft delivered to customers this summer blocks 80 patches and fixes from installing after Windows XP is
restored using its "repair" feature, researchers said today.
Scott Dunn, who first reported the problem in a story posted
Thursday morning to the
"Windows Secrets" newsletter, said that users who
reinstall Windows XP with the repair option cannot retrieve the full set of updates from Windows Update (WU). The problem, he said, has been traced to
the so-called "stealth update" to WU which Microsoft has acknowledged sending to users beginning in July.
Two weeks ago, Dunn
broke the story of the background updates, which were sent to most non-corporate Windows XP and Vista users. The updates were delivered and installed
without prior notification, even when the PC's owner had told the operating system not to download or install updates without notification and
permission.

27.09.2007More on Windows XP SP3...
Microsoft Update Team: We'd like to provide more information and address reports you may have heard about "continuous reboot loops" occurring upon
the update to Windows XP SP3.
After investigation, weve determined this problem occurs on AMD-based machines with Windows XP
images that were originally captured by an OEM on an Intel-based machine. The problem is a registry value, present on images created w/ Intel
processors, that causes a driver (intelppm.sys) to load at boot. When intelppm.sys attempts to load on an AMD-based system upon the install of SP3,
it causes a blue screen and the continuous reboot. Were planning to add a filter to prevent Windows Update from offering SP3 to affected systems and
are investigating a fix. Any customers affected by this issue should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for assistance. More information is
available in
KB888372 and
here.

16.05.2008An Update For Windows Update
An infrastructure update has been planned for Windows Update client. The gradual roll-out of this update will begin in late July. This update will
occur automatically to any system configured to either receive updates “automatically” or “notify” customers that new updates
are available for download.
For enterprise customers who use Windows Server Update Services or Systems Management Server, all updating,
including the WU client, is controlled by the network administrators, who have authority over the download and install experience. Windows Vista
customers who select “never check for updates” in their WU settings will not receive this update until they manually install updates from
Windows Update.
In this particular update, there will not make any changes to the way WU looks or feels, instead the following have been
improved:
- The length of time it takes Windows Update to scan for updates
- The speed in which signature updates will be delivered
Detailed information on this is posted on the
Microsoft Update blog.

05.07.2008Microsoft Halts XP SP3 Update to HP PCs Running AMD CPU's
The recent Windows XP Service Pack 3 update has left certain AMD-based PCs manufactured by Hewlett-Packard caught in an endless reboot cycle caused by
an Intel-specific disk image mistakenly being used with AMD hardware. According to the Microsoft Update Product Team Blog, "The problem is a registry
value, present on images created with Intel processors, that causes a driver (intelppm.sys) to load at boot."
In order to fix the problem,
Microsoft has temporarily blocked these AMD machines from getting the service pack while it cobbles together an alternative update. While some users
wait for Microsoft's fix to eventually be released, others have turned to a former Microsoft employee, Jesper Johansson,
who coded up a free tool to detect and fix the problem and made
it available last Wednesday. Once Johansson's fix has been implemented, users can update their systems to SP3 without any problems.
