Police to recruit 'tech-savvy' via Second Life

In a bid to keep up with the times, the Vancouver Police Department is setting up a recruitment seminar in the online virtual world, Second Life, to take on 'tech-savvy' recruits.

"It's important for us, as an organization, to keep abreast of modern technology -- both from an educational standpoint and an outreach standpoint, and from an investigative standpoint," said Kevin McQuiggin, head of the Vancouver tech crimes division, via Canada.com.

"Any new media that comes out, any new form of communication, crime is going to migrate there," he continued.

What's that got to do with player of Second Life? He explains: "As we move into the future, we're going to need people who understand technology -- that are conversant with it, that understand the impact of it and understand how to use it." So if you play Second Life, you're bound to be that person. ..

Tech Professionals Rank Top Tech Toys For The Holidays

Tech professionals want HDTV this holiday season, according to a poll by an industry group.



The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) announced Wednesday that more respondents in an informal poll chose the HDTV as their "most-wanted" high-tech toy this year. More than 15% of 1,012 respondents said they want HDTV.



Sony's PlayStation 3, which ranked first last year, came in second among the most desired gifts this year, with 13.7% of respondents choosing the item. More than a third of respondents put game consoles on their list. Nearly 11% chose Nintendo's Wii, putting it third on the overall list, while 10.2% said they would like Microsoft's Xbox 360, which ranked fourth.

Disconnected phone lines, old computer software, no instant messaging, no outside access to e-mail accounts and no social networking - these were the things Obama's tech team got to see in the White House when they turned up to work on their first day. The White House new-media team found it hard to identify the configuration of computers in the White House to do any useful updates. The team members, who were used to working on Mac systems, found computers with very old versions of Windows installed and in fact not enough computers for use. Laptops were also assigned to only a few people.

Africa Leads In IPv6 Adoption

The recent news that China will run out of IPv4 addresses in a few years points to slow adoption of IPv6 in some developed countries. Now it turns out that the largest number of networks displaying new IPv6 address blocks are registered through AfriNIC, which services networks in Africa and the Indian Ocean. While AfriNIC has a smaller installed base than other regions, many countries in Africa are showing rapid growth in terms of online connectivity.
