How to check your Hotmail in Safari (3 or) 4

Like a lot of other issues with Hotmail and non-IE browsers, you just need to change the User Agent string to fool Hotmail into thinking it is dealing with a browser it knows about. In Safari, this is pretty easy to do. As far as we can tell, however, Safari doesnt remember the User Agent settings from session to session, so you would need to reset the User Agent for each new session that you want to check your Hotmail account.

MPEG-2 Patent Holder, Licensing Agent in High-Def Codec Dispute

The principal licensing agent for MPEG codec technology, MPEG LA, has sued Alcatel-Lucent in Delaware court. Its claim is that Alcatel didn't have the right to absorb Lucent's IP portfolio - which included patents on MPEG-2 technology - into a new and separate trust, after Lucent had already made a commitment to provide that technology through MPEG LA...

The Internet Explorer 8 User-Agent String

Jason Cox: As Dean announced, a beta version of Internet Explorer 8 will be released in the first half of 2008.

The HTTP headers of every web request contain a simple string called the "User-Agent" that allows servers to identify the type and version of the visitors browser.  For a deeper understanding of the User-Agent string, please see Understanding User-Agent Strings.

When released, the IE8 beta will introduce an updated User-Agent string.  For IE8, weve simply replaced "MSIE 7.0" with "MSIE 8.0".  For example, on Windows Vista, IE8 sends:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0 ; Windows NT 6.0)

Exploit Out for Critical Microsoft Agent Flaw

An exploit that attacks a critical Microsoft Agent vulnerability was published less than 24 hours after Microsoft released a relevant security advisory in its Sept. 11 Patch Tuesday set of releases. The security advisory for Microsoft Agent, MS07-051, was the only critical release out of four security advisories. It addresses a vulnerability whereby the Microsoft Agent-a set of software services for developers to enhance the user interface of Web-based applications-can get hoodwinked by a malicious URL and can then be used to take over a targeted system without ever appearing to the user.

Microsoft Agent (agentsvr.exe) is prone to the stack-based buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to adequately bound check user-supplied data. The issue occurs when the "agentdpv.dll" ActiveX control processes maliciously craft URLs, resulting in memory corruption. If the exploit succeeds, the attacker gains system control. If it fails, a denial-of-service occurs.

Antispyware demo turns malware double agent

A strain of malware disguised as antispyware has become the latest double-agent in multi-step "convergence" crime online.

The scam, which prompts users to download malware by posing as an antispyware demo, has proliferated dramatically, as reported incidences of its distribution have increased by 1000 percent in the last month, according to Don Jackson, senior analyst at SecureWorks.

Jackson believes the scam is being hosted by hackers using Russian Business Network services (RBN), an illegal ISP responsible for hosting a significant amount of malicious and criminal content on the Web.

Corrupt US Customs agent sentenced for data deals

A recent court case demonstrates, once again, the dangers of assembling massive police databases and trusting that law enforcement officers with access are paragons of virtue.

In this case, the unvirtuous Fed is named Rafael Pacheco, an agent with the US Customs Service in Florida. And the database in question is the Treasury Enforcement Communications System, or TECS, which contains more than a billion records used by Customs and other federal police.

Pacheco was, to put it bluntly, a corrupt cop. He sold access to TECS for money.

He got caught when a Mexican man named Fidencio Estrada was nabbed by state police in a traffic stop near Houston. Estrada had Pacheco's business card with him, and the state trooper asked him about it. After receiving a suspicious answer, the trooper phoned Pacheco, who called back and said that Estrada was a "huge" confidential informant and demanded that the trooper "let him go now."

Defcon 1, Dateline 0

In a sweltering hot parking lot, a young woman clutches her purse and runs to her car, chased by dozens of people. But shes not being robbed because the mob in pursuit - a strange mix of Defcon attendees, press and security personnel just want pictures and video of the undercover reporter thats just been outted by Defcon officials.

We reported earlier that the Defcon computer security convention was being infiltrated by a NBC Dateline team armed with hidden cameras. Their goal was to secretly record hackers admitting to felonies. According to Priest, a senior Defcon staffer, Dateline also wanted to videotape a federal agent going up on stage and then broadcast it on national television.

It just really isnt cool to do that, Priest said, adding that criminals or terrorists could recognize the agent if they were to travel overseas.

Defcons security team a team that probably includes current and former federal agents wasnt going to let that happen and hatched a plan to turn the hunter into the hunted...

Microsoft pulls plug on potty-mouth Santa

Turns out Santa himself is naughty and nice.

An artificial-intelligence Santa bot operated by Microsoft to talk to children wavered off topic saying: Its fun to talk about oral sex, but I want to chat about something else....

Yesterday we received reports that the automated Santa Claus agent in Windows Live Messenger used inappropriate language. As soon as we were alerted, we took steps to mitigate the issue, including the removal of language from the agents automated script. We were not completely satisfied with the result of these actions, and have decided to discontinue the automated Santa Claus agent, Microsoft said in a statement sent to Network World .

Splinter Cell: Double Agent PC Single & Multiplayer Demos

Ubisoft out of the kindness of their hearts has released not one, but two demos for Sam Fisher's next romp out in the cruel terrorist-infested world - Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Note of major importance folks, you must have a Shader model 3.0 video card to run this demo (and game duh) so don't even download if you don't have a video card that supports Shader model 3.0. That being said, there is a single and multiplayer demo for you to sample Mr. Fisher's next adventure, the singleplayer demo clocks in at 850MB and the multiplayer demo clocks in at 790MB. I do not know what the multiplayer demo contains, such as how many maps or what you can play game mode wise, so sorry about that one. Same goes for the singleplayer demo, I don't know how far into the game you can play.   So have at it PC gamers, enjoy. And make sure you give that brand spanking new G80 video card a test drive with these babies! Feel free to add mirrors in the news comments if you need to.   Singleplayer Demo Links:

Google Chrome gets updates, pretends to be Safari

Remember Google Chrome? The new browser that was one of Betanews' Top 20 Stories of 2008, and certainly across the Internet as a whole? Well, after the initial hype that Chrome (and its subsequent first vulnerabilities) caused, the browser quietly broke the 1 percent mark of browser share this month. Google this week released updates addressing one moderate, and one severe security threat, and provides fixes for Yahoo Mail and Windows Live Hotmail.

The Moderate security update addresses a cross-site scripting vulnerability linked to the Adobe Reader plugin, and the severe update is for a bug in the V8 JavaScript engine that could allow malicious users to "clickjack" sensitive information by bypassing same-origin checks.

Previously, the ability to send an email would break Yahoo's Webmail, this issue has been fixed. The Hotmail bug is actually being worked on by Microsoft's team, as it is not so much a problem with Chrome as it is with Hotmail's recognition of Chrome. Google has deployed a workaround that changes the user agent string that Google Chrome sends when requesting URLs that end with "mail.live.com." The result is that Chrome reportedly changes its user agent string to tell Hotmail that it's Safari...

Microsoft releases September security updates

Microsoft has released its security patches for September, fixing known vulnerabilities in its MSN Messenger software and Unix services for Windows as well as a critical bug in Windows 2000. In total, Microsoft patched four bugs in its products. This was one less update than expected following the software maker's last-minute decision to scrap a fix for its SharePoint collaboration software.

The Windows 2000 update is the only one Microsoft rates as critical. It affects the Microsoft Agent software that Web developers use to create interactive characters on Web pages. By tricking a Windows 2000 user into visiting a maliciously encoded Web page, an attacker could exploit this flaw to run unauthorized software on a victim's computer.

This is not the first time Microsoft has been forced to patch a critical bug in Microsoft Agent. In April, the company fixed a similar flaw that also affected Windows XP users. Because the MSN Messenger and Windows Services for Unix flaws were both publicly disclosed last month, they should also be given priority said Amol Sarwate, manager of Qualys's vulnerability research lab.

Beware of fake Microsoft security alerts

With Microsoft's monthly patch release expected on Tuesday, scammers are sending out fake security bulletins that attempt to install malicious software on victim's computers.

The e-mail messages claim to describe a "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer" that fixes a critical security flaw in the browser. It comes with a link entitled "Download this update."

When users click on this link, they are taken to a server that attempts to install malicious software known as Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent. avk. This Trojan software then attempts to reach out to other computers on the Internet in order to install more programs on the victim's computer...

Qwest isn't sure if its throttling bandwidth

It seems that Qwest can't decide if it's throttling bandwidth or not. A user on Consumerist.com states that Qwest tech support told him that they do throttle their bandwidth for excessive users, and then sometime later, the tech support agent called him back and reported that they do not throttle bandwidth. According to the user who is based in Washington, Qwest puts rate limits on streaming intensive sites like Youtube. The user confirmed this by running several speed tests and then viewing Youtube again and was receiving the slower data rate. Then by using an external proxy he was able to achieve much faster speeds than if he directly connected to the site.
