Gmail is 5 years old today

It's hard to believe but five years ago Gmail was launched and changed how we view email storage forever. If you recall when Gmail was made semi-public it shattered the email storage capacity for any available free service. Storage was measured in gigs and you seemingly could store unlimited amounts of emails. The Gmail launch also started a frenzy of trying to acquire an invite to the service. It was a clever but very effective technique by Google to give out invites to users who would then get 10 more invites and so on which caused people to start selling them on Ebay.

Undo send email in Gmail

Many times we forget to add attachments, notice a spelling mistake or forgot to add something in the email. New in Google Labs is an add-on to your account that can undo the email you just sent, with a limit of five seconds, allowing you to go back and re-edit the email you previously just sent. Once the add-on is enabled under your Gmail settings, Labs and Undo Send, users will be promoted with an "Undo" button after sending an email, giving them just enough time to prevent regrettable emails. If users opt to undo the email they had just sent, they will be taken back to the email where edits can be made.

Google Labs: Turn your email into a Google Doc

Google has released another experimental feature from their Google Labs offerings, that allows you to turn an email into a Google Doc. Quite often we might have lengthy email conversations that become tougher to manage going through each conversation. With this new lab feature, you can turn a whole bunch of similar email conversations into a Google Document. You can turn on this new lab feature by going to the Gmail Labs tab under Settings, select Enable next to Create a document and hit Save Changes at the bottom. Here is a good example below from my own email.

Whitehouse email offline

Late yesterday it was reported that the email system for the White House was offline and there was no estimated time until it would be back up. "Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced the technical snafu at his 1:30 p.m. briefing, apologizing to the media for the e-mail silence this afternoon." It appears that it was a server overload as the new administration was migrating their transition email over to the official White House email servers. The outage affects both incoming and outgoing emails. The server being knocked offline is probably not a coincidence after the Obama staff complained that the technology was archaic.

Levono Constant Connect allows BlackBerry email syncing

Lenovo has recently come out with a new technology that allows their ThinkPad laptops to sync emails with BlackBerry phones. Sounds exciting and innovative, right? Maybe not, but there's something rather unique about this new service; it's still able to operate even if the ThinkPad is off. The technology works over BlueTooth, as Gizmodo reports, and will be instantaneous. No waiting for the email to push over to the BlackBerry or vice versa, it'll happen the instant an email arrives. The email that this is based on has to be enterprise based, however.

How to Connect Your Email Address to Your OpenID Account

OpenID is an excellent solution for establishing a single identity for all your online accounts, but many people haven’t even tried it yet. For some, the concept of using a URL address for a login ID instead of the traditional email address is still completely foreign.

However, Email to ID could be what the doctor ordered and what these creatures of habits need. It could also be what OpenID needs in order to expedite wide-spread acceptance as the single sign on identity standard. You can now link your email address (or several of them) to your OpenID and then use that email address (any of them) to log into any online service that supports it! The beauty rests in the simplicity of it all. Best of all, it’s all free and easy to do.

Spam accounts for nearly 95 per cent of email

Spam email accounted for between 90 and 95 per cent of all email in 2007, up from an estimated five per cent of email in 2001, according to a report from web security company Barracuda Networks.

The report, which analysed more than one billion daily email messages sent to more than 50,000 users worldwide, also tracked the increasing complexity of spam techniques over the past several years. 2007 witnessed the majority of spammers using identity obfuscation techniques, in which spammers send email from diverse sources throughout the internet. Other spamming trends also include the increased the use of attachments, including as PDF files and other file formats.

Ballmer attacks Google for reading your email

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has attacked Google's business model, claiming that reading customers' email doesn't work.

Ballmer, who was speaking to an audience in the UK, claims making money from email services is very difficult.

"Our Windows Live Hotmail doesn't generate much ad revenue, so we've had to put a portal around it, because the traffic it brings is very valuable, but it's not very easily monetised," he claims.

He then launched an attack on Google, claiming its business model of selling advertising based around the content of email is flawed. "Google's had the same experience, even though it reads your email and we don't."

Hotmail users get a storage bump

"Today, these new features will begin to roll our gradually to all our customers over the next few weeks, so if you dont immediately see them, be patient, theyre coming!"

Microsoft on Monday made a series of updates to its Windows Live Hotmail service, chief among those being an increase in the size of its inboxes. Standard users now get 5GB of storage, while paid MSN Premium and Hotmail Plus accounts now get 10GB of storage.

The move follows Yahoo's decision to offer its mail customers unlimited storage. Google's Gmail currently touts 2.89GB worth of free storage for its accounts. Apple also recently upped its .Mac storage limit to 10GB, split between mail and file storage.

In addition, Microsoft said that Windows Live Hotmail is also adding the ability to accept and decline meeting requests from Outlook accounts as well as a tool for eliminating duplicate contacts and an easier way to switch to Hotmail from another mail service. ..
